8 years ago, I tweeted side-by-side maps from NASA GISS showing global temperatures in 1976 and 2018 – both hot summers in the UK. It subsequently went viral and was printed in the Daily Mail! The 2026 version is stark. Two locally extreme summers separated by 50 years of global climate change.

Climate change may reduce the native plant species used by Indigenous cultures in the Amazon basin by one-third, according to research in Nature. The reduction could result in the loss of a quarter of the knowledge associated with the uses of Amazonian plant species by the end of the century. 🌎🧪

Can we actually predict how forests handle extreme heat based on plant heat tolerances? It's tough. A lack of standardized methods and physiological metrics mean results from different studies can’t be readily compared. This make big-picture predictions unreliable. 🌎🪴🍁🌐🧪 #climate #plantecophys

So, how can scientists advance heat tolerance research? We suggest some standardized reporting conventions, but more importantly we suggest focusing on research that links heat tolerances to other higher-order processes like growth, survival, and reproduction.

Despite collating >3100 heat tolerance records for >1700 species, there is limited global taxonomic and biogeographic coverage. The image below shows the @ipcc.bsky.social regions where heat tolerance records have been collected and regions still lacking heat tolerance data.

We also found that very few methods produced heat tolerances that were correlated. This could be explained by methodological variation, but may suggest uncoordinated orthogonal physiological pathways.

Of course, anyone who has been interested in heat tolerances research knows how many different methods exist. To simply these approaches, we categorized them and still found 67 different methods.

One of the most challenging things to do in the fight against climate change is get the financing needed to develop large-scale carbon removal projects. To do this you have to prove you have the best people, expertise, and science on your side.

Plant heat tolerances (PHTs) remain a hot topic (pun intended), but their physiological relevance to broader metrics of performance - and even other metrics of heat tolerance - are are poorly established. Part of the issue with plant heat tolerances is that they are measured so many different ways.

Hopefully, this database disambiguates some of the different ways to measure (and interpret) PHTs. Look at panel A in the figure below - 70 distinct methods even after trying to simplify and categorize them.
