LA has at least 56 million square feet of empty offices--and many actually can be converted into homes. Veteran reuse architect Karin Liljegren joined us on "In Search of a City: The LA Housing Podcast" to explain how other cities are doing it. Here's the keys 🧵

The child sex abuse at UCLA's daycare occurred while our kids were there (thankfully in different classrooms). UCLA cops and administrators knew of the predator years in advance and bungled the response over and over. This reporting is a critical piece. There is more. 🧵

Childcare shortages affect the whole region, as public policy changes like Universal TK have, despite real benefits, disrupted the financial sustainability of childcare across California. As they close, more will not necessarily be able to replace them. www.latimes.com/california/...

latimes.comBlow to Westside child care: UCLA to close infant and toddler centers charging $3,000 a monthUCLA will close its remaining child-care centers in June, leaving hundreds of families scrambling to find new care amid an acute countywide shortage.

UCLA's failures reflect a system present in other UCs and California institutions. Changes need to be made to ensure accountability in public institutions across the state, rather than offenders and bureaucrats evading responsibility and taxpayers having to pay settlements.

4. It does not hold anyone accountable. The administrators and police who have failed are all just in other positions of responsibility. 5. Instead, teachers will lose their jobs, many of whom were critical both as family support and in bringing Rodriguez to justice.

Regents meet this week to consider both a settlement and the closures. If they fail to hold UCLA accountable, the responsibility falls to our elected officials. In any case, state and local officials will need to be involved as the impacts to the public go beyond UCLA.

UCLA has now moved to close all campus childcare, which it says is unrelated and for financial reasons. laist.com/news/educat... This is not what families want and continues to hurt them: 1. It strands families without childcare in an area where programs have 2-year waitlists.

2. It doesn't eliminate risk for families, who will be lucky to find any childcare and must simply hope it is better run. 3. It does not rid UCLA of risk--they still are running multiple K-12 schools with a system that has failed once and has not been reformed.

Families have fought for years for transparency, reform and accountability. UCLA administrators and police continue to pass the buck and evade basic questions. UCLA may settle a lawsuit over it. But avoiding deeper reform fails families past and future. dailybruin.com/2025/09/28/...

Republicans in power: "Well, they didn't give us the $5000 the last two times they said they would, but maybe the third time is the charm." Democrats in power: "They only gave us $2700!" (when it was way more!)

Zbur apparently worked with Durazo on this. Gives the lie to any claims they have to be for “local control” or for “community processes." If those interminable, expensive processes ever yield a result rich special interests don’t like, they are simply vetoed in a backroom - process be damned.

🚨 It's go time, YIMBYs. 🚨 Years in the making, AB 1903 could make big progress on fixing frivolous litigation that has it made so hard to build condominiums in California, but it's facing stiff opposition. Now is the time to CALL and EMAIL your assemblymember and senator.

Because of the group chat, I’m watching this and my god, everything my colleagues have said about wealthy homeowners having particularized politics that are regressive and bad for public policy is on great view here. Wild stuff.

Can't believe one chud HOA with a duct-taped sign is hosting *two* mayoral debates in America's second largest city

At the last debate, the moderator put participants on the spot and asked them to promise to participate in another debate hosted by them. Worked in the moment, but these shameless tactics should disqualify them from every hosting an important public debate again.

The Sherman Oaks HOA, despite inflating their own wealth for generations blocking homes for others, declined to spring for a full version of Zoom--so many were blocked from joining. bsky.app/profile/esot...

The Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association didn't spring for a professional Zoom account, so sorry, you can't watch the Mayoral debate if you're just logging in now. www.shermanoakshomeownersassociation.com Seriously, what is this amateur hour foolishness? The City has a television channel.

CA stopped building condos, depriving Californians of homeownership. Condos are 3% of CA apartments, vs 40% in Canada. A 2002 law lets HOA lawyers sue builders instead of repairing defects, spiking insurance costs and building risk. AB 1903 would help fix. via @tobyhardtospell.bsky.social

Thank you to the @ladailynews.bsky.social for publishing my op-ed on how single-family zoning is keeping Los Angeles down! Making LA a more affordable, livable city will require making it legal to build housing in more of the city and that's what I'm running to do. www.dailynews.com/2026/05/27/h...

dailynews.comHenry Mantel: Single-family zoning is the anchor dragging Los Angeles downThe only way to make LA more affordable is to roll back single-family zoning so that we can finally build enough housing to solve this housing crisis once and for all.

You know who Spencer Pratt reminds me of? Amy McGrath. Someone who soaks up money and attention from out of state donors excited over social media videos and completely ignoring the fundamentals of the race.
