The national mourning in Chile for the loss of French artist Thierry Defert, “Loro Coiron,” has been heartwarming. Loro captured the soul of Valparaíso. The Ministry of Culture, French Embassy, Museo de Buenas Artes, Mayor of Valpo all in mourning. Loro did the cover art to my 2nd book. I loved him

So maybe the moral of the story in the Jake Bauers redemption arc is that, if you provide health care for a man and his family, he will pour his heart & soul into his job, become the very best version of himself, and this will, simultaneously, uplift & inspire millions of others.

Our llamas & ‘pacas on our farm in Futaleufú, Chilean Patagonia, may or may not have known that their Dad attended the Brewers 7-4 victory over the Dodgers at Amfab Field in game 2 of the NLCS, but—even 8,800 miles away—they could feel the vibes. What a night indeed.

After 34 years living my best life in Chile people ask if I still feel “American.” I identify more with my native WI than with the US as a whole. Here I am enjoying the October salmon run up the Milwaukee River at Riverside Park in Thiensville. Here to visit Mom, I feel a bit like a salmon, too.

Growing up on Milwaukee’s North Shore we ventured rarely beneath the city’s equator to the South Side. Now I’m obsessed with it. Here are some friends I met at Grant Park. I walked the 7 bridges. Had breakfast at Axiotl Cafe, a Mexican brunch spot in Bayview. Shopped at Groppi’s Italian Market 😀

Arrived in MKE from Chile early Friday a.m. for my best bud’s daughter’s wedding. Sunday afternoon we were at the Brewers game with the newlyweds and my entire family #2. So much fun! What a game. Absolute pandemonium. Jackson Chourio will definitely have Patagonian alpaca named after him this year!

Any photo featuring Little Willie is a good photo. But I really like this composition. There is something interesting in every space. I like the layering and texture in the landscape. Heading to WI for my best friend’s daughter’s wedding. Maybe a Brewers playoff game & a trip to Lambeau 🙏🙏

One of the most underrated pleasures of living in Patagonia is when you have to leave early a.m. for the airport and you discover you are being honored with a full military escort off the property 🤗😊😍.

Lukka & Eldfara. If these two knock on your door and insist you come out and play in the rain, what are you answering? Patagonia problems.

It’s hard to believe that Freyja, the first Icelandic foal born in Patagonia, is already 4 years old. That little tuft between her ears is exactly the same as it was the day she was born. Time moves quickly. Live slowly. Love deeply. Savor every moment.

The first 5 Icelandics born on our farm in Chilean Patagonia were fillies. Then came Skjoni. He’s a momma’s boy and a spitfire and an utter delight. For 9 months he has enjoyed his life with his harem of 7 ladies. But in spring he will need to be weaned to begin a new life with Ori & Baldur.

Chileans celebrate Fiestas Patrias at “fondas” where they eat empanadas , drink & dance the cueca. Fonda traditions vary from region to region. Here in the Azul Valley, Futaleufú for example, locals enjoy listening to the river, nibbling the first grass of spring, & taking siesta under the stars.

Good morning friends. Our friends at Tulipanes Patagonia have announced dates for this year’s viewing season, Oct 7-Nov 8. For those who don’t know, this popular event is located in the lovely Welsh Argentine town of Trevelin, a short 45 minute drive across the border from our farm in Futaleufú.

As a child, all-time Packer great, Willie Davis, lived next door. We had season tix to the County Stadium games & watched many woeful teams in bitter cold. When Desmond Howard returned the kick in SBXXXI, I wept. We watched SBLXV with my dying father in hospice. This Packers fan isn’t going anywhere

When in Quito you must visit the house/ museum of Oswaldo Guayasamín (1919-1999): La Capilla del Hombre. One of the greatest of the golden generation of 20th century Latin American artists, writer’s & intellectuals. I almost met him through a mutual friend in ‘98, but he fell sick & died soon after.

I usually laugh at folks who post food pics, but when in Lima, Peru what are you going to do? Filet mignon kebabs w/ olive puree, huancaina & chimichurri glaze. Native potatoes & grilled Inca corn. Amazon ceviche w/ mango tiger’s milk & goldenberry. Don’t even get me started on the desert. Insane.

View from the Concon Sand Dunes in greater Valparaiso/Viña del Mar. Many come to watch the sunset, only to leave before dusk. The dusk is the best part! The 42 illuminated hills of Valpo come alive camera left. This never grows old. I am off today to Lima, Guayaquil, & Quito. Love life. See ya!

New pond #3 on our farm in Futaleufú, Chile. This one serves as a watering hole in “Peggy’s Meadow,” a small prairie where we graze our Icelandic stallions and our alpha male alpaca & llama: Little Willie & Dalai. I find myself hanging out here more often these days. Man cave, Patagonia style.

In 2001 I had the honor of being a houseguest for 4 days of Douglas Tompkins—the North Face founder who dedicated his later life to restoring land & donating national parks to Chile & Argentina. We shared a passion for Wendell Berry. Douglas & Wendell were friends. 2 enormous & consequential lives.

Since it’s bye week before our beloved Green Bay Packers kick off season #106 that means its time for the annual llamas vs alpacas intersquad game on our farm in Chilean Patagonia. Little Willie is QB for the “alpackers” this year. Yuki, a llama, volunteered to fill out their undersized lineup.

If you ask Eldfara, our spectacular 3-year old Icelandic mare, what she most loves about living in Chilean Patagonia she might mention the turquoise rivers, the jagged mountains, the glaciers, and the old growth forests. But she also loves the tradition of the afternoon siesta!
