The 3rd Series of Prime Video's 'The Rings Of Power' is released in less than 3 weeks. How do you feel about it? Will it encourage more people to read the book and bring a younger audience to the world of Tolkien? What are you interested to see brought to life on film? #Tolkien #TheRingsOfPower

Myth-buster: The Lord of the Rings is not a trilogy. It's one book, published in three volumes in 1954–55. The films are a trilogy; the book isn't. #Tolkien

On 21 September 1937: J.R.R. #Tolkien's The Hobbit was published. The book tells of a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, and his journey with thirteen dwarves to recover their treasure from a dragon, Smaug. It's sold over 100 million copies and is one of the best-selling books of all time.

On 15 September 1977: J.R.R. #Tolkien's The Silmarillion was published. Edited by Christopher Tolkien, the book details the entire history of the world before The Hobbit, and goes into the legends that underpin the entire mythology including the creation of the world.

It tells us about the Gods - the "Valar" - including the important myths of the First Age such as Beren and Lúthien, the Fall of Gondolin, and the Flight of the Noldor, as well as the Downfall of Númenor. We learn about the characters Eärendil, Elwing, Fëanor, Galadriel, Túrin, Melian, Mîm and more!

On 2 September 2021: The Nature of Middle-earth is published. Edited by Carl F. Hostetter, the book a huge collection of writings by #Tolkien on both the physical nature of Middle-earth and the metaphysical, including Tolkien's own views. A must-have collection!

On 2 September 1973 J.R.R. #Tolkien died aged 81. #Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is the best-selling book of the 20th Century, and is joined by seminal works The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. He may have died 53 years ago but his influence and legacy lives on in us all. Namárië. #booksky #lotr

On 30 August 2018: J.R.R. #Tolkien's The Fall of Gondolin was published. Edited by Christopher Tolkien, it's the tale of the elven city of Gondolin and its destruction, over 6,500 years before The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien called it "the first real story of this imaginary world".

On 23 August 1990: The War of the Ring was published. The book, edited by Christopher Tolkien, is the eighth in the History of Middle-earth series. It follows the process Tolkien went through in drafting parts of The Two Towers and The Return of the King. #lotr #Tolkien #BookSky

A very happy birthday to John Howe! John's artwork has graced many #Tolkien works, including, most recently, Unfinished Tales. His skill has meant he's worked on The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit film trilogies as well as The Rings of Power. Happy birthday!

A very happy birthday to Alan Lee! Alan has illustrated many #Tolkien books including The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and most recently The Fall of Númenor. He won an Oscar for his work on the film trilogy, and for many his art perfectly captures J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. #Booksky #lotr

On 17 August 1953, #Tolkien writes to his friend and publisher Rayner Unwin on the names of the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings. The names chosen are "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King". And the rest is history! #lotr #booksky

For the second volume, "The Ring in the Shadow", "The Shadow and the Ring" and "The Shadow Lengthens" had all been considered before "The Two Towers" was chosen. It is unclear whether Tolkien or his publisher chose the name.

For the final volume, Tolkien preferred "The War of the Ring" as the title didn't reveal the ending of the story. But Tolkien was overruled by Unwin who chose "The Return of the King" instead.

Over some months did Tolkien and Unwin consider the names of the three volumes and the six books (the latter not used until the Millennium edition). For the first volume, Tolkien suggested both "The Return of the Shadow" and "The Shadow Grows" before "The Fellowship of the Ring" was chosen.

Did you know there is an Annotated version of The Hobbit? The revised edition, edited by Douglas A. Anderson, was published on 16 August 2002, and delves into #Tolkien's influences, provides background info, and even a number of unpublished poems. A must-have! #Booksky

On 16 August 1984: The Book of Lost Tales Part Two is published. The second in The History of Middle-earth series edited by Christopher #Tolkien, it contains some of the beginnings of Tolkien's legendarium and the stories that would later lead to The Silmarillion. #lotr #BookSky
