On his coaches show, Brent Venables said Oklahoma will split FG work evenly in practice this week. Reigning Lou Groza winner Tate Sandell has struggled. He's 10-of-16 on the year and was 3-of-6 last weekend. Venables: "He likes it. He's a very competitive guy. He doesn't want it any other way."

Update here: Oklahoma OL Sean Hutton was released from the hospital this afternoon. He FaceTime'd Oklahoma's locker room after its 23-15 win at Mississippi State.

Oklahoma will be wearing helmet stickers to honor teammate Sean Hutton, who was hospitalized Wednesday after a “rare medical event” at practice and remains in stable condition.

Oklahoma wore helmet decals with the initials "SH" on them Saturday, in honor of hospitalized teammate Sean Hutton. It's fitting, in a way, that as OU played for Hutton, his best friend and star left tackle Michael Fasusi made his return after missing five-plus games due to a shoulder injury.

QB John Mateer says reserve OL Sean Hutton was “in the facility and walking around” today after being released from the hospital Saturday. Mateer said Hutton and his mom were also waiting for the team when they arrived back in Norman on Saturday night.

Oklahoma edge rushers Taylor Wein and PJ Adebawore decided they wanted to do a joint post-practice scrum. Why? Adebawore: “That’s my dawg.” Wein: “Salt and Pepper.”

Some news: Tae Davis is rejoining Oklahoma’s basketball roster while seeking a fifth year of eligibility. He averaged 13 points and 5.6 rebounds last season while starting every game for the Sooners.

Oklahoma linebacker Owen Heinecke was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 23-15 win at Mississippi State. Heinecke had 10 tackles, with two for a loss and a sack, as well as a forced fumble. He posted a 92.6 run-defense grade, per PFF, with eight tackles vs. the run.

Tate Sandell, the reigning Lou Groza Award winner, hasn’t been the same this season. He missed three field goals yesterday against Mississippi State and is now 10-of-16 on the year. Despite a “pretty perplexing” performance Saturday, Oklahoma is standing by its All-America kicker.

Brent Venables wasn’t the only person in OU’s program dealing with the flu this week. The Sooners — from John Mateer to Owen Heinecke — were besieged by flu-like symptoms throughout the locker room. “Guys are popping whatever — Xofluza or flufloza… the nuclear bomb pills for the flu, the IVs.”

John Mateer is normally a sound sleeper, but he woke up in the middle of the night Friday and had two simple yet powerful words pop in his head: "Forgive yourself." Fueled by that late-night premonition, Mateer learned to forgive and delivered his best game of the year in a 23-15 win at Miss State.

Brent Venables, who himself had flu-like symptoms earlier this week, notes Oklahoma's roster was dealing with a lot of that this week and guys were pumped up on "the nuclear bomb pills for the flu -- whatever you take for the flu."

Brent Venables: "Tate (Sandell) will be fine. I know that's pretty perplexing, but he'll be fine. That should've been a four-, five-score win."

Sandell misses another one, this time from 41 yards out. He made it from 36, but OU had an illegal formation, so Sandell had to re-kick from 5 yards further back. No good.

Tom Green@tomasverde.bsky.social

Tate Sandell has missed two 45-yard field goals on the same side of the field. Pushed the first one wide right. Overcorrected on the second, which goes wide left.

Through three quarters, John Mateer is 18-of-22 for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Can he finish off a strong performance on the road with Oklahoma leading Miss State, 20-7? Stay tuned!

Mississippi State chases in the Oklahoma turnover with a double-pass for a touchdown. Sooners' lead cut to 17-7 with 6:55 left in the third quarter.

Not a great few minutes for Rocky Beers, who drops a third-down pass in the end zone (Jardin Gilbert credited with a breakup). Oklahoma settles for a Tate Sandell FG and takes a 20-7 lead on Mississippi State late in the third.

BREAKING: Oklahoma has scored multiple offensive touchdowns against a Power Four opponent for the first time this season. John Mateer hits Rocky Beers for a 32-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half. Set up by a 47-yard Tory Blaylock run on the half's first snap.

Billy Puckett has replaced Kamario Taylor at QB for Mississippi State to open the second quarter.

Tom Green@tomasverde.bsky.social

I don't understand why Miss State chose to play Kamario Taylor today. He's a statue out there.

Oklahoma Can't Get Out Of Its Own Way, Part 537: John Mateer hit Rocky Beers for a 7-yard completion on third-and-7 that would've given OU first-and-goal at the 9. Negated by a Peyton Joseph chop block. OU pushed back to the 31, doesn't convert, has to settle for a 45-yard FGA that's no good.

Oklahoma has failed two convert two third-and-shorts in Mississippi State territory. -- Third-and-3 on opening drive, settle for 42-yard FG. -- Third-and-2 on next drive at midfield; punt.

Oklahoma did not attempt a pass on its opening drive. Four designed runs, including a 12-yard end-around to Isaiah Sategna on the first play. But no chain-moving after that. Oklahoma settles for a 42-yard Tate Sandell field goal and an early 3-0 lead in Starkville.
