To automate the calibration process for my new HF Tracer production I’m experimenting with the PE4302 DSA (Digital Step Attenuator). It’s not super accurate but predictable with reproducible results. The PE4312 would probably be better but I couldn’t find any off the shelf modules with it.

Want to try a LoG receive antenna. It was a fun build.

Now and then I test LLMs with small coding tasks. This time Gemini. Conclusion not very good. It needed 7 tries to get close to a working solution. Yesterday I heard an AI ham radio station and lots of operators having a QSO with it. It was on 7130 kHz with callsign ED7SUN.

“Ik heb niks te verbergen”, dat zeggen mensen dan die alles klakkeloos delen, hun telnr geven, locatie gegevens, Bluetooth aan hebben, Facebook gebruiken etc. Zo ook Amerikanen die niet hadden kunnen dromen dat al hun bewaarde data ooit tegen ze gebruikt zou worden.

Natuurlijk bestaan er andere opties. Voorbeelden genoeg in landen om ons heen. Wellicht niet meteen optimaal maar begin toch eens een keer zelf de broek op te houden.

T2LT antenna. How nice to see low takeoff angle for dx is a real thing. Reverse beacon network shows clear improvement compared to my EFHW.

Added a CO2 laser head to my CNC machine

Next iteration of my antenna analyzer. Working on the third PCB prototype now. The firmware is about 70% done. It has a remote terminal with (simple) speech, it tells you “long”, “short”, etc. So hands-free.

My new shack. It’s a fully enclosed and insulated cabinet in the workshop. No dust gets in and the temperature is regulated. Important for keeping the humidity in check.

Testing prototype 2 and do some enclosure fitting. The signal generator of the HF Tracer (antenna analyzer) works as expected; >20dB above the first harmonic. Good enough for its purpose. Next week testing the ADC and work out a small problem with the power circuit. #hamradio #electronics

Entshitification of serverless and npm chaos. I’m returning to simplicity. PocketBase with a plain vanilla JS framework for the front end. PB is plug and play, no fuss. JS framework has no dependencies besides a simple PB client lib. No endless npm or dev tool ocean with ongoing version management.

Hf Tracer prototype first measurements. The latching power circuit worked as intended but I need to shorten the button hold time (smaller cap). I need to find a better LDO (lower dropout). The Si5351 works okay but I spotted some interference. Next I’ll move on to te LNA section.

JLCPCB tip: yesterday I learned that color matters when ordering minimal quantity PCBA for prototypes. I couldn’t order less than 5 (assembled) boards. Some parts are expensive and I don’t need 5 prototypes. Turned out you only get the option of 2 for green and black.
