4/ Unexpectedly, psilocybin's effect were not global or uniform but dependent on the image structure: Only images with long, continuous contours recruited change-encoding neurons that were modulated by psilocybin.

5/ Our findings point to a previously unrecognized role for SST interneurons in the acute psychedelic state, potentially linking altered surprise signals to visual distortions. A huge thank-you to the entire OpenScope team, especially @jeromelecoq.bsky.social, for making this work possible!

2/ We found a striking behavioral effect: psilocybin reduced change-detection performance to chance, without causing obvious motor deficits. At the same time, visual stimuli drove a strong 4-Hz oscillation across visual cortex, especially in VISp and SST interneurons.

3/ Surprisingly, despite this oscillation, image id encoding was completely intact! By contrast, this oscillation was closely linked to CHANGE encoding, pushing visual cortex dynamics in SST interneurons towards states usually associated with surprise.

Our study using layer fMRI to study the direction of communication between the hippocampus and cortex during perceptual predictions is finally out in Science Advances! Predicted-but-omitted shapes are represented in CA2/3 and correlate specifically with deep layers of PHC, suggesting feedback. 🧠🟦

I’m excited to share a new paper from the lab. The study led by Xiaowei Gu reveals how the mPFC encodes complex emotional memories, using an internal model to infer emotional associations and memories via projections to the amygdala. a🧵(1/8) rdcu.be/el19t

rdcu.bePrefrontal encoding of an internal model for emotional inferenceNature - Neurons in the rodent dorsomedial prefrontal cortex encode a flexible internal model of emotion by linking directly experienced and inferred associations with aversive experiences.

Sharing a new paper from the lab. This paper, led by Sangyoon Ko, represents a merging of two longstanding research themes in the lab-- adult neurogenesis and systems consolidation. rdcu.be/el18q A short thread follows for those interested. 1/n

rdcu.beSystems consolidation reorganizes hippocampal engram circuitryNature - A study shows that loss of memory precision associated with systems consolidation can be explained by neurogenesis-dependent reorganization of engram circuitry within the hippocampus over...

I'm excited to share that the last chapter of my PhD thesis is now published in Nature! 🍾 What drives serotonin neurons? We think it's the expectation of future reward and --- critically --- how fast this expectation is increasing. 📈 doi.org/10.1038/s415... 1/6
