We finally started playing Mermaid Mask last night after clearing our respective backlogs and it's incredible. I know games like this are team endeavours but I think @sfbdim.bsky.social actually doesn't get enough credit for the VAST quantity (&quality!) of writing he does here (by himself afaik!)

one thing i've caught myself developing is a slight pre-emptive fear of a video turning out to be AI or have AI elements. like whenever a video starts on my timeline i feel this tension where i worry that something abruptly surreal and clearly impossible is going to happen

it's a sensation that has a horrifyingly dreamlike quality to it, that shock of reality suddenly collapsing into something surreal. a lot of AI stuff makes me think about dreams. if the whole thing didn't disgust me out so much i think i'd find it quite compelling artistically

youtu.be/EIv3jgqGXqo?... i can't explain why but i would impusively look away from the screen during the little intro to Sharky and George, the bit where it pans across the underwater city. Looking back at it i think it's something to do with the darkness and the booming, sweeping synth soundtrack

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

Rereading some Eightball scans that are on the internet archive. The final panel of this (particularly dreamy) comic stuck has stuck with me a long time

I know there's a lot of dissection of what's meant by the term "camp" and I agree with john waters that it has to be unintentional, to be stumbled upon on some level. But I'm also persuaded that a crucial element of true camp is that legit artistic brilliance occasionally shines through

Sleepaway Camp has this imo (not just the ending). I can't bring myself to designate it as a so-bad-it's-good movie, it loops back around to being an incredible work of art

We just got to the ep where Jonas Jr dies in our Venture Bros. Rewatch and I have listened to that Crash Test Dummies song that the pirate captain guy sings at his funeral a surprising number of times

I did a bit more art streaming this morning, just pencilling a 1-page comic for a collab some work pals are doing. But it went quite well! Depending on how I feel I might do some more this afternoon

I really like the chunky volume that kishimoto gives the ten-tails, that cross section of thickness that the eyelids have. Feels like the (similarly chunky) mass produced EVA units

I'm not a fan of it but I don't think AI is remotely capable of "destroying humanity" and I'm convinced the handwringing tech bros that are coming out declaring this are motivated by some nefarious financial reason rather than any kind of conscience

My instinct is that it's going to increasingly enshittify our lives with the detritus it produces (both informational and physical) rather than some kind of big world-ending skynet situation. Fossil fuels will kill us all long before ai does (I'm aware the two are linked)

Got to the foot fetish episode of King of the Hill (!!). Season 4 is really great, feels like it's really hit a peak for the characters, humour and overall storytelling

I do feel bad because it was very formative to me but every time I reread Naruto I like it less past maybe the first few arcs. maybe because I'm more familiar with a lot of the stuff it (unsuccessfully, imo) is trying to ape... particularly HunterXHunter

but i feel like there's a slightly unhinged element to togashi's rendering that makes this way more successful in practice. togashi's art and writing is just altogether weirder in a way that i think compels me a lot more. kishimoto's a FANTASTIC draughtsman don't get me wrong!!!

also the characters that show up in later naruto are just... less fun. the other konoha kids plus the sand ninja are maybe one of the best lineups of characters in 2000s battle manga. i struggle to remember the names of powers of any of the cloud/stone village ninjas that show up in late shippuden

one thought i had: early on kishimoto does this crazy detailed beautiful crosshatched panel of itachi looking back at sasuke... i think he's kind of going for that togashi trick of a "jumpscare panel" where a character's suddenly rendered in an utterly different way to convey a sense of threat

I hate those little brightly coloured bauble drinks (caffeinated? booze?) that kids seem to have all the time... but also there's something slightly, delightfully, dystopian about them. You could imagine them being chugged by delinquents in Blade Runner or something

i quite liked Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma! I'm about the same age as Jane Schoenbrun so i feel like we're drawing from the same well of collective unconsiousness somehow. lot of little elements in the film struck chords

random thing that stuck in my mind: the film has a real thing for REM, opening with a cover of Nightswimming. when Kris walks into the camp initially she walks past a huge colourful mural in a long tracking shot. instantly reminded me of the backdrop in the Shiny Happy People music video
