Californians, please talk to everyone you know about the insurance commissioner race! Many folks don’t know who to vote for, since both candidates are Dems. And plenty of people don’t understand that Jane Kim’s proposal would incentivize high fire risk & have urban folks subsidize high risk areas.

Sitting on a stalled Capitol Corridor train in the middle of the Suisun marshland. Apparently the locomotive lost power. Maybe the California Zephyr catching up can push us. 😉 At least it's pretty.

Finally off in Suisun instead of Davis. I'll just ride my route backwards. Annoyingly, the Garmin won't let me reverse the route because I imported it from ridewithgps. So I'm gonna wing it and look at my phone occasionally.

The Zephyr passed us and is apparently now backing up to pull us into Sacramento. We're supposed to transfer to the Zephyr cars at an upcoming stop. I'm here for a bike ride out of Davis, might just get off early.

People who fall on the "things happen to me" end of the control spectrum (as opposed to "my decisions affect my life") tend to get attracted to fairly inconsequential details of their environment in an attempt to control their world. When even that fails, they end up bitter and angry.

If there was BRT on San Pablo from Richmond to Oakland, I might ride AC Transit more than BART. It would be super convenient and likely would lead to me spending a lot more time and money along the entire corridor.

This comment reminded me of the book that caused me to get angry/sad every time I visit a new place in California, because I know its history.

I just read The King and Queen of Malibu for book club. Some of the members sympathized with the Homesteaders who were locked out of the coastal route to their homesteads by the Rindge family in Malibu. I asked why homesteaders were sympathetic. The history of the north coast is so problematic

So cool!

Why would you pay your property tax? Well... If you don't, the city or county will place a tax lien on your property and collect the unpaid taxes when you sell. Or, they'll just auction the property off from under you.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

“Walsh added that the board recently approved her motion to increase reliability reporting from twice a year to monthly, which is set to begin at the end of October.” ✊🏼

It's a quick survey, you should do it. My knee-jerk snarky response to another survey for an area with obvious safe infrastructure needs is "perhaps these well-worn informal paths going past no trespassing signs are a signal."

Take the Lafayette BART station area access study survey now, before the October 18th deadline! Let the city know you want to see significant bike/walk upgrades on streets all around the station. fp.mysocialpinpoint.com/lafayette-BA...

Absolutely jam packed VTA 500 arrives at Berryessa BART as everyone spills out into 2 fare gates. I rode my bike to the other entrance near the escalator, got on a train that immediately departed. I'm the only person that made the connection. 😕

Good news, it looks like the hiring freeze is off and maybe AC Transit can get back to a healthy number of operators.

The staff report to the Fort Bragg City Council confuses Class 3 e-bikes with e-motos, doesn't identify the underlying problem, and recommends... banning Class 3 e-bikes. Sigh.

The Mendocino Voice@mendovoice.bsky.social

The Fort Bragg City Council is considering new park rules that would cap speeds at 15 mph for bikes, allowed e-bikes and skateboards on the Coastal Trail. The council takes up the proposal on Tuesday at its regular meeting. mendovoice.com/2026/10/fort...

Last evening in the span of 6 minutes, I photographed 9 cars blocking the bike lane along Piedmont Ave in Oakland. 4 had expired tags. I didn't photograph 3 more, but a bus did.

This individual Doordash guy has 100 unpaid parking tickets, mostly for parking in the red bus-only lane on Durant in Berkeley. Incredible stuff. It really proves that there is no amount of scofflaw behavior that can result in actual consequences for car drivers.

Reading up on what AC Transit has published about CO2 emissions from their zero emissions program. The board is about to vote on purchasing 13 more Hydrogen fuel-cell buses this week. This quote is from the 2025 Zero Emission Program Annual Progress report (June 2026).

BTW, this analysis covers both "Scope 1" and "Scope 2" emissions. bsky.app/profile/traf...

I wrote about this a while back and stand by the numbers. As currently operated, AC Transit's Hydrogen fuel-cell buses contribute 2.19 kg/mile of CO2 emissions, whereas the diesel hybrid buses are 2.41 kg/mile. That's only a 10% decrease in CO2 emissions, for a much more expensive technology.

This being the internet, someone will surely want to comment you can make and buy (nearly) zero-emission Hydrogen. But it's vastly more expensive, there isn't generation capacity, and since ARCHES was canceled, that capacity will never be built. Because nobody wants to pay for it.

For comparison, AC Transit's battery electric buses are 0.47 kg/mile of CO2 emissions due to grid electricity, but could trivially be reduced to zero by purchasing zero-emission electricity, which in CA is cheap and plenty of capacity.

I agree 100% that "it’s vital to evaluate their entire life cycle". But apparently AC Transit does not think it's vital enough to include Scope 2 in this report. (The next paragraph talks about "the figure below" about a figure that is not actually included in the report.)

Absolutely bleak bus service planned for Central Contra Costa County if RTM fails. County Connection will have to cut 10 of its 22 lines. Nearly all of the remaining lines will have frequencies slashed to 60 minutes. RTM will not just save BART - it’s critical for every agency and community.

Like many Bay Area transit agencies, County Connection is facing a budget challenge. Our proposed Alternative Service Plan is not guaranteed; rather it provides a roadmap for reducing operating costs if additional funding does not become available. countyconnection.com/altservicepl...
