¿Importa realmente la secuencia en la transición fuera de los combustibles fósiles? Esta pregunta estuvo en el centro de una de las sesiones de la TAFF conference TRAJECTS participó en las discusiones, aportando a los debates sobre transiciones justas y economía política.

Desde TRAJECTS trabajamos justamente en estas discusiones.Entendemos las transiciones no como hojas de ruta abstractas, sino como procesos atravesados por poder, territorio, instituciones y justicia social. Porque la “secuencia correcta” no es solo técnica, también política.

Lo que muestran las experiencias en regiones de carbón es más complejo: • La diversificación muchas veces solo se acelera bajo presión • Actores incumbentes pueden retrasar o reconfigurar el cambio • La economía política pesa tanto como la planificación ⚖️

Does sequencing really matter in the transition away from fossil fuels? This question was at the center of a session at the TAFF conference. Several members of TRAJECTS took part in the discussions, contributing to exchanges on just transitions and political economy. 👇tread

The real challenge is timing: Too early → no political momentum Too late → collapse without alternatives So what emerges is not a technical sequence. It is a political balancing act between exit strategies and diversification pathways.

A key takeaway from the conversation: sequencing matters, but not in a linear or predictable way. In theory, early diversification is always preferable. Start before closures, reduce risks, build resilience. But in practice, transitions rarely unfold like that.
