"If there’s no ghosts, then I don’t have a mother or a father & probably I’m going next. But not tonight, tornado. Come what may, I’ll cover my family with my big body & I’ll shout, 'Everything will be all right' & they’ll hear in my voice I mean it." - Lucas Flatt mrbullbull.com/newbull/flas...

Hey #flashfiction folks. Or writing friends in the UK. Particularly Scotland -- I'm going to Edinburgh for a few weeks this winter. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for writerly stuff to check out/do ? I'll ask this again closer to time. Just trying to plan my trip.

FlashFlood: 'Unerasable' by Tracie Adams #nffd2026

dlvr.it'Unerasable' by Tracie AdamsWe were toddlers in waist-high snow. She was inches taller—babbling, pointing, teaching me to trace the first letter of my name in white powder, collecting the extra in cups. We added cream and spoonfuls of white sugar, stirred in vanilla, then gobbled our names with spoons. Yum, she rubbed my tummy—aren’t our names delicious. We were baby bears, climbing trees in our backyard, sneaking Dad’s pocketknife to carve our names in the bark. We were dreamers under starry skies, their names—Arturus, Polaris, Vega—tumbled around our mouths with braces and sour candy and big plans to change the world.  We grew apart after Mom died, moved to opposite coasts. I wrote our names in the sand, tagged her in my post. Too busy changing the world, she didn’t even comment. By morning, the tide had carried it away. That night, I wrote in my journal how the days so easily forget about the years.  We were unprepared when the call came. Dad named her executor, put me in charge of burial. Lying on the thrifted oriental rug Dad had claimed was worth thousands, we scrolled through his phone, laughing at his ALL-CAPS messages to us and crying at our lack of replies. I don’t remember whose idea it was first. We were adventurers again, the dynamic duo armed with fat black sharpies from the kitchen junk drawer. We stopped at every gas station, any bathroom with a door we could lock behind us. Call Dad, we scribbled under his number.  For years, we traded that phone back and forth, taking turns answering when his name lit up. Teenagers, night-shift nurses, drunks, divorcés. We answered every call, every text. Sometimes it was just me calling her to say goodnight or her texting me good morning in ALL CAPS.  --- Tracie Adams, author of two memoirs, Our Lives in Pieces and Not Finished Yet, has been nominated for the Pushcart, Best of Net, and Best Microfiction. Her work is published in Pithead Chapel, Stanchion, Fictive Dream, Cleaver Magazine, and more. Find her at tracieadamswrites.com and on X @1funnyfarmAdams.

"The effect of waiting on the passage of time should be studied." That's a really damn profound line. Nice. Excellent, expansive flash from @fionamckay.bsky.social

FlashFlood: 'A Brief History of Atomic Time' by Fiona McKay #nffd2026

dlvr.it'A Brief History of Atomic Time' by Fiona McKayIn the staffroom, Kate plugs in a fan which swings from side to side, moving the stale air around. Beside her, a physics textbook is open, and she reads – An atomic second is defined as 9,192,631,770 oscillations of a caesium-133 atom. There is an orange on her desk and she peels it, inhales the bright, sweet scent. She reads about the transition between two hyperfine levels of the ground state of this atom. She is in transition between breaktime supervision and her final year French students. This atom must be at rest, at zero degrees Kelvin. Her foot taps as she refreshes her email; refreshes again. There are sixty seconds in one earth minute. Sixty of those in an hour. Twenty four hours in a full spin of the globe. One hundred and sixty eight (she imagines this in the voice of a darts commentator) hours in the space between one weekend and the next. Between an interview, and a possibility. The orange drips juice and her fingers are sticky on her phone as she calculates the number of seconds in a week. The app refuses to multiply the 604,800 seconds by the oscillations she’d read in the textbook. She agrees. Whatever it is, it’s too many to contemplate. She feels every single oscillation. Balances the needs of her students, and her desire for a promotion. Other factors: what her ex will have to say about it; are her children happy; does she need to worry about her pension or will the world have ended? She goes back and forth. The effect of waiting on the passage of time should be studied. Maybe it has been, she doesn’t know. Maybe it becomes quantum time. An oscillation of a caesium-133 atom, under observation, approaches infinity. She checks her email again. --- Fiona McKay is the author of the novellas-in-flash, The Lives of the Dead and The Top Road, and the collection Drawn and Quartered. Her flash fiction is in The Forge, Gone Lawn, Ghost Parachute, trampset, Peatsmoke, Fractured Lit and others. She lives in Dublin.

Gorgeous flash. You are just *there* for a few paragraphs. Great, great, great.

FlashFlood: 'Nothing Bad Happens' by Emily Rinkema #nffd2026

dlvr.it'Nothing Bad Happens' by Emily RinkemaThe girls dance in the road outside a party after midnight at a boy’s house, a boy whose parents are away, whose parents are visiting another child at college and have no idea there are kegs in their kitchen and bongs on their porch. There’s an ice storm, and the girls are a little bit high and a lot bit drunk on tequila, dancing here in a quiet road a few miles from the center of town, and they can see a long way in one direction and only a little way in the other, where the road turns into the woods.  But there are no cars coming, not yet, not now, not in this storm, so they hold hands, partly to keep themselves upright on the ice, but mostly because they are the kind of best friends who drape over each other in chairs, who sleep entwined in each other’s beds, who wear each other’s socks and admit to each other fears they haven’t even admitted to themselves.  They slide to the right on the ice and then to the left and start singing a song they learned when they were in camp together, back before boys and cars and storms and tequila and mothers who waited up on stormy nights worried about things that make headlines. The girls know all the lyrics to the song still and they feel each word in their chests, in their cheeks, in their bellies, on their scalps, and they keep singing, even when they fall, even as they lie on their backs in the center of the road, laughing, still holding hands, and they can’t hear the party anymore and they can’t hear the ice-on-ice of the falling sleet and they can’t hear anything over the sound of each other’s laughter. --- Emily Rinkema lives in Vermont. She recently has stories in Cleaver, Vestal Review, Milk Candy Review, and Wigleaf, and in Best Small Fictions, Best Microfiction, and the Best American Nonrequired Reading anthologies.
