Had an amazing time at the @ukhsa.bsky.social air quality research review meeting in Newcastle today! It was fascinating to learn more about air quality impacts on human health. I enjoyed discussing my poster, investigating interactions between net-zero aligned afforestation and air quality. 🌳☁️🌍

We've written a blog about our new paper! 🔎If you want to find out about net-zero aligned afforestation in the UK and how this might impact future biogenic emissions in a warmer climate, check out the summary blog @leedsleaf.bsky.social🌳☁️🌍

Increasing woodland cover to 19% to help reach net-zero could change the biogenic emissions from UK woodlands. @treeswithhazel.bsky.social’s latest research shows the potential scale of change by 2050 associated with different tree species mixes. The findings demonstrate that the impact of net-zero aligned afforestation on BVOC emissions can be minimised through careful selection of tree species, which could help to avoid unintended consequences of afforestation on air quality.

This study focusses on tree species that make up the majority of existing UK woodland or are expected to play a key role in UK forests in the future and examines afforestation in a warmer climate with higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

We model the emission of biogenic emissions from five afforestation experiments, based on an achievement of 19% average woodland cover in the UK by 2050, in a future warmer and drier climate. Woodland cover is currently around 13%.

Final day of #EGU25 tomorrow! I’ve really enjoyed my first EGU - hearing lots of #atmosphericscience and #biogeoscience talks (and giving my own!), as well as science to policy and science communication workshops too! Plus the #urbantrees in Vienna are great 🌳

Tree friends 🌳 Near us is a bank of #LondonPlane trees, surrounded by what is essentially a ball pit of their leaves which seem to always be there(!). It makes me so happy. But today on my walk through those leaves, I noticed this zesty green #Lichen! Anybody know what type of lichen it is?

Hello Bluesky! I've finally joined. Hopefully I can find the excellent tree community I once enjoyed on that other platform(!). I am a PhD researcher at the University of Leeds, investigating the interactions between trees and the atmosphere (1/4)
