My takeaways for US v MEX 1) US really didn't allow that many chances, even in the first 15. Only real chance was Santi's but Kochen did just enough. 2) US didn't really create their own chances. Only real one was Ellis's against 10-man. 3) Intensity was great. US won duels 55-43 4) Freeman was

awesome on both sides. Cavan's defensive effort was great. 5) Any takes that we're well past Mexico is way too premature. This game wasn't as dominant as the score line suggests. Both sides missing players, Mexico still holders of Nations League, Gold Cup, u20, etc. 6) Great win!

Great ball by Berhalter over the top to find Freeman. Great run by Reyna to give Freeman a quick breakthrough option. That's basically the route to break this defensive scheme.

Arman Kafai@armankafai.bsky.social

What a ball from Alex Freeman man. Just a great ball into space that Reyna can do something with

Assuming Poch plays his best XI vs Mexico, maybe it's something like this: Freese Freeman - Richards - Trusty - Jedi Seb - Adams Dest - Tillman - Gio Hall

First half Touches in opponents half: 🇺🇸 118 - 🇨🇱 50 Touches in opponents box: 🇺🇸 11 - 🇨🇱 12 Shots inside box: 🇺🇸 4 - 🇨🇱 5 Second half Touches in opponents half: 🇺🇸 70 - 🇨🇱 64 Touches in opponents box: 🇺🇸 16 - 🇨🇱 4 Shots inside box: 🇺🇸 9 - 🇨🇱 3

Chile deserved the equalizer. Brady was shaky the entire half (Enter Schwake). US has a 118-48 advantage in touches in opponents half but down in touches in opposing half (9-8). Dest & Reyna are the only ones that can pass or dribble into opposing box. Likely need a third (Albert/Gozo for Raines)

25 minutes in, USMNT has a 43-25 advantage in touches in the opposing half but is down 3-4 in touches in the box. Likely means you have to take out one of the Mehmeti, Raines, Berhalter trio for a more attacking player at half

Assuming a full rotation for USMNT to be able to play the best lineup against Mexico, then maybe something like: Schwake Westfield, Richards, Miles, Jedi Raines Berhalter Mehmeti Dest Hall Albert

I watched the game yesterday with a Peruvian fan who didn't know much about the US team at all. He thought Cavan was the best player on the field by a lot. Had no.context on his age or hype, just by watching the game.

Interested to see Peyton at LB & how Ellis does as a linking ST. And obviously Cavan. It's a very experienced Peru side (average age 31 vs US's 23) with a ton of familiar names for MLS fans.

It's easy for full-on USMNT fans & experts to think of the upcoming friendlies as zero stakes thought experiments toward 2030. I'd like to dismiss that notion If we want any momentum from the World Cup, then each game needs higher attendance & viewership than before. These games have to matter. 1/

You may point out that they're <1 yr out from the World Cup (true!), but the USWNT also take way more tournaments seriously & try to win each and every friendly. Our women's side is a serious, top program and they have the following to match. It should be the same on the men's.

Gold Cup has to matter. Copa America has to matter. Olympics has to matter. Reversing the below 👇🏾 has to matter. Current holders men's titles: Nations League - Mexico Gold Cup - Mexico U20 CONCACAF - Mexico Champions Cup - Liga MX Leagues Cup - Liga MX Only ever CONCACAF Olympic Gold - Mexico

@empiregass.bsky.social talks about this a lot. For the following of USMNT to permanently grow in popularity, they have to win consistently & look good doing it. Especially at home and against non-Pot 1 sides. Anything else won't take hold. We can't expect the US audience to stay interested if we

have 4 games in a row of blah performances (especially vs Mexico & US). Of course, young talent has to get integrated, but top programs do that without losing competitive edge and taking each game seriously. Just look at USWNT, the upcoming friendlies vs Spain will be highly attended & contested

For the casual fan who tuned in, they're not going to pay into the "buts". If Peru works us at home, you & I can explain "but we're integrating young talent that's unfamiliar" or "but it's the beginning of the Euro season, so we're leaving top players at home". The casual fan? Not gonna work.

Jakupovic is one to look for in the coming years. Great movement in the box.

Jonathan Tannenwald@jtannenwald.bsky.social

Malik Jakupović has his first MLS goal as a professional. He won't score many easier ones in his life, but they all count. The Union win 5-0.

Cavan Sullivan has 10 goal contributions (5g/5a) in his last 8 games and has a second half to go still. Messi has 11 goal contributions (7g/4a) in his last 8. You know for comparison's sake.

I'm pretty sure he'll be training with the Man City first team in the off season, so City can get a feel of how much can transfer over. Pretty sure he did the same at the u21 level last year (and did well).

Matthew Doyle@mattdoyle.bsky.social

Not gonna be up to us. The Man City hype train has already left the station and every EPL club's got a fan base that is larger and orders of magnitude more unhinged than anything US fans can conjure up.

Very smart roster here. We absolutely cannot do a youth revelation with only eyes to 2030. That's not how good programs are built, it needs to build on each other. I think this roster does that & keeps us trying to win each of the four friendlies (important to keep audience engaged)

Matthew Doyle@mattdoyle.bsky.social

Armchair Analyst: The USMNT have an extended camp coming up – the first of the 2030 cycle – and that means Poch gets to take a long look at the roster. My predictions on who's included here. tacticsfreezone.ghost.io/predicting-t...

I'm with Paul, this is an upgrade & actually rewards regular season performance more than current.

Joseph Lowery@joeclowery.bsky.social

MLS's proposed new playoff format is complicated. Far too complicated, I think. But I will say, this piece from @paulharvey.theoutfield.nyc made me reconsider — and even get a little excited — about the new setup. Very much enjoyed having my opinion challenged.

For years Cavan Sullivan has been more a prophecy than a player. That changed this summer. We have pro data on him now and it's very, very exciting — by some measures he might already be the best teenager MLS has ever seen. Wrote about his game for @theguardian.com:
