Truly excellent thread. The real dangers of AI are human negligence. From using it to teach our kids or design our bridges or enforce our laws. Skynet doesn't become self aware it infers a flock of geese is an ICBM, and some human idiot decided it should be able to act autonomously

Good afternoon! Your friendly cyber mechanic here! I'd like to share some knowledge on a poorly understood topic that boosters and critics chronically misrepresent. Let's talk about what computer scientists mean by "AI" and "LLM"s. They aren't what you think they are; this is important.

I have to call the IRS. I wait in the phone queue for 2 hours. Mrs. Nice answers, introduces herself, asks me a question. I respond. The line is silent. Still connected. The line is silent. 30 minutes pass. The line is silent

I don't think I can express how wrong headed this entire thread is. But I'll try. (1) The conservative position on climate is an insane analogy to use for AI skepticism because conservatives are not denying the claims of their "ideological opponents", they are denying the actual evidence!

Chris Hayes@chrislhayes.bsky.social

One of the stubborn dynamics in climate politics is conservatives being simply unwilling to believe that their ideological opponents were/are right about something very important. Lots of conservatives really did covince themselves it was all a conspiracy to impose more government control.

Today's AI tech provides an extremely powerful and opaque automation framework. And this makes it possible for far more people to build complex automated systems without any real understanding of their operations. This means a lot of unintended consequences and unexpected failures

It also vastly enhances the the abilities of bad actors to perform bad actions. I like what Chris Hayes does, particularly that he engages with the issues honestly and openly. But I think he is well off the mark here.

I would urge anyone who doubts this to take a look at Adam Becker's work for a thoroughly researched account of the origins and evidence for these AI fantasies. (3) The entire AI industry is engaged in a world historical economic fraud, which absolutely relies on hype to sustain and power it.

A lack of skepticism about the motivations and veracity of the AI industry is insanity. (4) Chris Hayes is right that AI is dangerous today and is going to get more dangerous. But not because of the ghost in the machine fairy stories.

They may be denying the evidence because their "ideological opponents" accept it, but what they are doing is denying objective reality. (2) An incredible amount of what the AI industry is saying is objectively nonsense. AGI, the singularity, and AI self awareness are fairy stories.

My kid is going to be taking the GRE. I decide to see what the current test looks like. I have to create an account with ETS. But of course their dogshit website thinks I have an account and both fails to allow me to log in or reset my account. But what works instantly are a thousand Instagram adds

Just scampered to the library to return "The Soul of a New Machine" (brilliant, do read). Looked up the central character and discovered he was the father of the most famous librarian I've ever met. #plateofshrimp #spl

We just watched Senate Republicans hold a gun to their own head, threaten to pull the trigger, and then eight Democrats were convinced that they were just crazy enough to do it. Welcome to Rockridge

Charlie Kirk was a racist and a transphobe who used his horseshit religious views as cover for his loathsome beliefs. May his death lead those who cared for him to reject the hate he embraced

Anyone want to get a round of "Fuck Charlie Kirk" going?

First #TeslaTakedown yesterday. Felt good to chant in front of a closed Tesla showroom. But must have seen over 100 Teslas on the road over the course of the morning. Fuckin' Seattle.

You are up to date.
