Canada is strengthening economic relationships with trusted partners, including Japan, and leading research universities are stepping up at this crucial moment. Building on deep research ties with Japan, U15 Canada led a delegation of university leaders to the 2026 STS Forum in Kyoto.

The visit coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Canada–Japan Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology. In meetings with our partners at RU11 Japan, we agreed to pursue more formal engagement between leading research universities in both countries.

Through science diplomacy, leading research universities are strengthening economic resilience and advancing the technological capabilities Canada and Japan will need in a more uncertain world.

Applying recent discoveries in the field of subsurface fluid mineral deposits, Reiners’ new UM research program will develop environmentally sustainable answers to Manitoba’s critical economic, energy, and national security needs.

Reiners will build on longstanding collaborations between governments, First Nations, corporations and communities to drive technological advancement in geoscience for Canada’s future and global leadership.
