What is entanglement? Itamar Pittowsky claimed that these results brought us right to the precipice of logical contradiction--but not over. Abner Shimoney described it as a piece of "experimental metaphysics." I'm a nobody, but I think entanglement is the most interesting thing ever discovered. 🧵⚛️

in most areas of physics, energy doesn't matter. it is defined only up to an additive constant. we care about energy-differences. is this true in GR? it looks like gravity couples right to energy density. is it the only theory where energy matters?

Suppose the universe was filled with water. This medium obeys a field equation that propagates causally along sound cones, which are narrower than lightcones. So the quantum of this medium, the waterton, is associated with the sound cones--not with the lightcones, and not with any mass hyperbola.

Why are watertons excluded by his programme? What assumption is he making? The sound cones do depend on the state of the water, whereas the lightcones are state independent. He's assuming relativistic wave equations cannot avail themselves of any fiducial objects, like the water's mode of motion?

Right; its FTL + Poincare covariance that usual unsettles people. It's been a while since my last relativity course, and it wasn't very foundationally-oriented in the first place. Why do we believe all our theories should be Poincare-covariant?

Two philosophers standing in front of a map where an arrow marks "You are Here" A: That's incredible, how did they know? B: Oh, it's a simple consequence of Brouwer's fixed-point theorem A: No no, I get that, but how did they know it would be *us*?

The forums are extended gutters and the gutters are full of text and when the servers finally scab over all the microbloggers will drown.

The accumulated filth of all their threads and musings will foam up about their waists and all the posters will look up and shout "do you have a letterboxd? a substack? a podcast? anywhere we can get unfiltered rochelle opinions & off-the-cuff riffing?" and I'll look down and whisper "No."

It doesn't make sense for everyone to know the 'magic system' back and front, like its the rules to monopoly. Actual scientific understanding/explanation is incomplete & opportunistic. Give me a 'magic system' with a handful of stubborn counterexamples and paradoxes, clouded in folk misconception.

My brother once told me how he struggled to systematize the world of, I think Dark Souls? He told me theres substances Void, Abyss, and Pitch (or some shit) which were similar but a little different, and he couldn't understand the relation. I said it sounds like early chemistry, or hadron physics.

cats use quantum physics to right themselves in freefall. its well known that exchange of a spin-2 particle reproduces Einstein's eqtns. when cats couple to gravity they spin, too.

We understand that key personnel at Verdi Alliance may be high-level donors to Doug Ford’s party. CBC reporting based on publicly available records appears to show that five directors with Verdi Alliance donated over $12,000 to the Ontario PC Party between 2021-22.

Verdi Alliance and ATS Traffic are actively dismantling the Bloor Street West protected bike lanes in Etobicoke contrary to the will of Toronto City Council. Neither of these companies is based in Toronto. Tell them to keep their workers home: cycleto.ca/stay_home

ELI6th year PhD what magic is?

APS journals@apsjournals.aps.org

Magic can be quantified from a small set of Pauli measurements, without full quantum tomography, according to a new study published in PRX Quantum. The approach allows for more practical ways to characterize large quantum systems. Learn more: https://go.aps.org/4dHuHG2

No reason to leave the credit out of an image post, imo. There’s plenty of space to say that the bright blue dot is Earth seen from Saturn, and also credit the folks with the attribution they requested. CREDIT: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute

and why does canada have a thanksgiving. was there a separate set of slightly earlier pilgrims or did canadians just eventually say "this turkey thing is baste"

I'm trying to figure out the Weinberg point of view on QFT, where the relativistic wave equations arise somehow as covariantization of the induced Wigner reps... it is slow going

Is anyone here familiar with modular localization in AQFT? Tomeka-Takasaki theory, standard subspaces, etc. This is really abstract and I feel like I only have a chance of figuring it out if I know what the goal is. And I want to figure it out, because I am concerned with localization in QFT.

I really took for granted that era of my life when I was being taught in real time every day by another person who I could interrupt and pose questions to at any time.

That brings to mind a question. I've never studied realistic models of black hole formation by stellar collapse. How does the mass of the resulting black hole relate to the total mass of the matter that collapsed? Is it the same?

Nvidie@dervine7.bsky.social

it made me very happy when Tim Maudlin pointed out in a podcast that the Schwartzchild metric is a vacuum solution, bc as a layman I'd long been bothered by the things popularly said about black holes ("all the mass/matter is squished together at the singularity" etc.)

I suppose it has to be. Its not like in GR the stellar matter itself has some unproblematic notion of mass we can just insert... the mass of the pre-collapse state will be judged in the identical manner to the post-collapse state, by the ADM procedure. Right?

I think even in special relativity its hard to say what the mass is of an extended body. That's why we need this:

Someone needs to write Inventing Temperature about all the physical quantities. Mass especially.
