This, from the hugely experienced Irish courts reporter, Isabel Hayes, on the Minister for Justice’s performative outrage over an ad about children and consent, is worth reading.

Very interesting interview by Nadine O'Regan with Beoga, the band who quit Ed Sheeran's tour. "The decision to stand up for free speech and the right to speak about Palestine was a very easy decision for us as a band to make."

It’s come to something when a photographer has to get legal advice, before displaying this photo in an exhibition, due to the risk of being prosecuted as a terrorist, but that’s exactly what I had to do yesterday. What a state this country is in.

Great piece here about the Irish government's AI summit and Ireland's economic "model" and identity.

Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, says she is "shocked" that Sally Rooney's books will no longer be distributed in Britain as a result of the author's support for Palestine Action. She said will raise the issue with Britain's foreign secretary.

"The technology, developed by Israeli company Discover-Tech, turns the system that processes trillions of online advertising transactions every day into a covert surveillance tool, enabling users to identify targets and hack their devices."

There's a shudder in DataCentreLand almost daily now. Today it's CoreWeave. IMO, the relevant "AI bubble" comparison isn't the dot-com bubble, it's the telecoms crash. Debt-funded build-outs, energy demands, and superfluous "infrastructure" are real, speculative overblown valuations are not.

Sally Rooney's books will no longer be distributed by Faber & Faber due to her support for Palestine Action. This is absurd, and part of a broader ludicrousness in British society where solidarity with Palestine is punished in increasingly nonsensical ways, while genocide goes unpunished.

Enjoying Liz Carolan’s observations from the Irish government’s AI summit today. A counter-summit run by the Communications Workers Union was held at the weekend.

I’m at the Govt’s AI Summit, reminiscing about when tech conferences had people with purple hair & big ideas Overheard conversations between grey suited people this morning are how backs are holding up after multi-hop trips from Bxl, & the €900 someone paid Ryanair to get here

Solidarity with all on strike in Ireland today. As for minister for public expenditure Jack Chambers characterising the strike as “deeply unfair on the general public”, these workers are also part of the public, should be treated fairly, paid properly, and their working conditions improved.

Ireland's gov has already pitched a sort of a (poor) version of this. The issue: if renewable energy projects are largely monopolised by data centre demands, it's not a green transition. It's generating more power for more power use. Electricity remains expensive, resources still go to DCs, etc.

Elizabeth Kolbert@elizkolbert.bsky.social

A simple idea for regulating data center mania: "No large data center...should receive the permits or grid connection it needs unless its developer brings enough new carbon-free generation, energy storage and transmission online to meet its additional electricity demand—and pays the full cost."

Irish Times readers may recall a piece I wrote about James O'Neill, the Belfast man whose body was found in the Phoenix Park in 2023, but whose family wasn't informed of his death for over a year. Yesterday, his parents met the Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan, to discuss their concerns.
