After several years of consuming the near entirety of my free time, the Liminal Horror Deluxe Edition is here. We have poured our hearts and souls into this and think that we've got something real special for y'all. Print copies available later this year! goblinarchives.itch.io/liminal-horr...

Wildwood is one of the most impressive displays of artistic expression that I have ever seen. There are some elements of the narrative that I could nitpick for the sake of conversation, but what Laika was able to achieve with their animation was nothing short of stunning.

I will admit, Discord changing its notifications noises to spooky sounds for Halloween is a good bit, as the standard notification is so engrained in my brain that I barely even register it anymore, so the new one will occasionally catch me off guard.

Finally had a chance to actually run Into Darkness. Can confirm that it hits like a truck. It can be done in 3 hours, but plan for 4 if you want to let the scenes breathe a bit.

There’s this anecdote that Mark Hamill likes to tell about how Lucas’ dialogue was often just not how people talked. That made it difficult to act out or even take seriously at times, leading to a lot of contribution to the dialogue from the actors themselves.

Cushing was arguably the biggest star that Lucas was able to sign on, but he was also a 20 year vet of Hammer Horror films. He had the experience to take awkward dialogue and treat it deadly serious. Tarkin needed the gravitas to be able to believably command Vader and a lesser actor may have failed

Tarkin is the counterpart that makes Vader so effective in this film. He is the human side of the Empire, the evils that are very real and easy to imagine. Even Vader respects his command. This alone gives us a good deal of insight into the Empire itself without needing to be fed exposition.

The film is effectively an adventure serial. We are starting in the middle of the story, something that would be made abundantly clear when the title was changed to A New Hope and it received the “episode 4” designation. We know nothing of the Empire, except that it is bad.

Vader is an incredible villain, but not one that could carry the first film alone. He is the Black Knight, dark and powerful to the extent where he takes on an inhuman status. There was even some speculation from fans at the time that Vader was a robot or some other manner of non-human.

To solve a great mystery: Einfühlung is not meant to be translated to “empathy” here, it’s the more literal translation “feeling into”. In this context it’s the emotional response one has when viewing art. There wasn’t a great English term, as empathy in its contemporary use isn’t quite appropriate.

Today on Between Two Cairns, @bradkerr.net, @betterlegends.bsky.social and I review Einfühlung by @goblinarchives.itch.io and @unenthuser.bsky.social, and answer a mailbag question about false rumors. www.patreon.com/betweentwoca...

Second mystery, art: - Cover: Enoch did the base illustration, Zach did the title and bloody drip, the rest was me. - Interior: illustrations are Zach, the faux video shots were me. - Layout: mostly me, but GA does the hyperlinking and some text input.

I'm not one to dive too deep into FOMO or wallowing in regrets, but Over/Under is something I'm legitimately crushed that I missed out on, though I know full well that I didn't join in because it would have tangibly ruined my life hahaha.

Gearing up to travel from PDX to Arcane Con this weekend! Have a suitcase full of con exclusive zines so if you’re in Northampton pop on by, I’ll be tabling with Tyler Welch (we’re snuggled up between Joey Royale and Cairn Press).

Had a glorious moment in a con game this weekend where a player noticed, remembered, and later excitedly went back for the Chekhov's Gun I'd put in the scenario. That's the kinda stuff you live for in environmental design.

Within this issue you can find Into Darkness, my CfB game that was heavily inspired by X-Files and written for CfB vets to be able to complete in a single session.

For folks looking to get more out of Liminal Horror, check out the most recent episode of Dice Exploder. Sam and Craig really get into the meat of what makes Fallout tick and do a fantastic job of explaining why it can hit like a truck with the right table.

This week, a day late, on Dice Exploder: @thirdfloorwars.bsky.social joins me to talk about fallout from Liminal Horror. It's adventure writing, how to make harm interesting, and horror modules! Take a listen:
