the basic idea is we're going to read two books, one that's optimistic about tech and one that's not, side-by-side. the goal is less to find pre-packaged answers we agree with, but to swim in the tension between conflicting perspectives and think, truly THINK, for ourselves.

the best way i know to think is to read something that provokes me a bit, then write (usually by hand) and see where it leads i want to be in conversation with books and ideas, rather than just consuming them this is gonna a space to practice that ethos, amongst a community of earnest humans

Weird how the more we try to control the world through force and logic the less alive everything feels, huh?

if ur mind and heart aren’t open to an encounter with the unknown, then it’s not a real conversation. it’s just sparkling discussion

My assumption with writing is that whatever moves through me from a place of surrender is far closer to the truth than any argument meticulously construct from my intellect.

i don't think it's right to put my cat on a diet if i'm not willing to do it myself this chonky guy is my ride or die. we're in it together

i am very much back on my "rob uses manifestos to help startups hyperstition their way into a future worth living in" bullshit

Get in losers, we're gonna become more wise, discerning, and adventurous in our relationship with technology 🫡

AI has made it possible for me to use and enjoy complex spreadsheets, and after a lifetime of not being a "spreadsheets guy" this strikes me as a miracle.

"Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness." -Charlie Chaplin

Most of what we refer to as trust is shallow. It’s about removing the barriers to transaction. Shallow trust can be manipulated and is fragile. Deep trust, by contrast, only emerges in sustained relationship. It is durable and nourishing to all parties, even when there’s no transaction at hand.

there’s a stark difference between performing as if you’re trustworthy and actually BEING trustworthy

you can just do things (use AI wisely and with discernment instead of being a techno-maximalist or becoming the unabomber)

my relationship with reading has shifted in a cool way of late. i used to churn thru books as if consuming info was the entire point. but now, i find myself sitting with passages that resonate, writing long winding responses by hand, returning over and over to books i’ve finished.

i find myself wanting to deepen into conversation with these works and get at their marrow. all of which is to say, books feel ALIVE again. 10/10 would recommend

g good product and reliable distribution are table stakes now. it’s trust, relationship, and integrity that will decide the winners of the next era. these are moats that cannot be copied.

“if I am not for myself, who will be? if i am only for myself, what am i? if not now, when?”

having a cat is basically getting freaked out every three weeks because they've somehow found yet another a new hiding place, even though you were SURE that you knew all their hiding places and there couldn't possibly be more. but no, there are always more hiding places

i got so much joy from playing hacky sack with homies all through my high school years feeling the pull to start hacking the sack again

you can just do things (leave your phone inside while you sit out on the balcony drinking coffee and reading fiction on sunday morning while your cat watches birds)

you can just do things (press your ear to your cat's body and let his purrs reverberate through your entire being)

you can just do things (rebound from a very difficult day where you shame spiraled into a bunch of unhealthy choices, but today you're being gentle and compassionate and doing a bunch of good shit to take care of yourself)

the poster child for enshittification has to be the "gas buddy" app. remember using it like 10 years ago and being like "wow this is so simple and useful!" downloaded it again this week cuz there are very few diesel stations near me, and holy fuck you guys it's so bad

told my mexican friend that i love beans and keep a 15 pound bag of pinto beans in my pantry and he said that makes me an honorary brown person

you can just do things (subtly skewer silicon valley's obsession with "agency" by pointing out small, seemingly trivial activities you can do that are rich with the very marrow of life if you pay close enough attention)

you can just do things (write out your favorite poem by hand, speak it out loud, memorize it completely, let it take root in the depths of you)

"meaning-shaped attention vampires that take mental effort to decode and give you no equivalent understanding in return" is a fucking great description of how ai writing feels to me if i get even a faint whiff of text being ai, i immediately stop reading
