I once DNFed a book where the author described Rockford, Illinois as south of Chicago multiple times. (Rockford is about 90 miles north west.) Since I've wondered what the other reasons people have DNFed a book.

My top 3 petty reasons are: โ€ข Using nonsense verbs such as "he carded his hair" or "he drug his eyes across his face". โ€ข In several books one (female author) has her gay characters hooking up and using hair conditioner as lube. โ€ข Where the dog dies.

Started the series Widows Bay (on AppleTV) earlier this afternoon... Can't stop watching. Halfway in and holy cow this is good. (First episode is really slow, give it a couple episodes to pick up.)

Watching the TikToks of Scotland's Tartan Invasion in Boston (for the World Cup) have brought me great joy. All of their silliness is inspiring and damn, those guys can wear a kilt. Rest of the world: take notice, learn, and be more like them.

Today I had a guest show me a photo of a book she wanted to buy. It's not available in store; I suggested she order it online. "I don't buy anything online!" She snapped rudely, before hustling away. Me: not telling her receding back the book isn't going to be released until late September.

Ever read a book you want to like and struggle to put it down? I just finished one. I did not enjoy reading this, as brilliant as it is. It's dark, and violent, and incredibly graphic about how humanity is and always will be people's worst monsters.

Tonight, I watched the Star Trek TNG episode Lower Decks. I've watched it only once before, when it first aired, which happened to be the same day my mother passed. I dunno why I'm sharing this. Feelings are weird.

The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.

The Heated Rivalry gay hockey players romance series is so sexy it makes ME blush (and I watch porn!) With that said, I have read all of Rachel Reid's Game Changer books (Heated Rivalry is #2) and I'll caution you not to expect a happily ever after (yet) in the season finale next week.

#4 Common Goal: Goalie Eric Bennet & grad student Kyle Swift. #5 Role Model: Troy Barrett & social media manager Harris Drover. Finally #6 The Long Game: Shane & Ilya Part 2. I personally had serious issues with TLG's story, so hopefully its translation to screen is handled better in season 2.

The Game Changer series feature characters you've seen in the series. #1 Game Changer: Captain Scott Hunter & barista Kip Grady's story. #2: Heated Rivalry: Shane & Ilya get together. #3 Tough Guy: Defenseman Ryan Price & musician Fabian Salah.

Iโ€™m rewatching Star Trek TNG on DVD (havenโ€™t seen most of these since original airing and just finished Cause and Effect (S05E18). Fantastic story, but I felt like I just watched the same episode seven timesโ€ฆ from different angles.

Just finished reading Susanna Clarke's phenomenally fantastic novel Piranesi, and will be automatically recommending this for a long time to anybody who wants to read a really really really really really good book.
