Eggbound's battle system is operational again after replacing the way enemies are drawn with the new technique!
We're making some progress today.
#gbstudio#gameboy#pixelart#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#monstertaming#retrogaming#retrogames#pokemon#fakemon
I had to go through and adjust the animation speeds for each encounter type.
For a single enemy encounter the dialogue would appear late compared to a triple enemy encounter.
So much fine tuning lately, but it's worth it.

A quick summary of what to expect from the technical demo for Eggbound - a monster collecting RPG being made for the original Gameboy.
Jump right in! Grab a monster and explore a dungeon. Maybe even play a tune to recruit some monsters.

For #ScreenshotSaturday I'm doing something weird. I'm releasing a prototype of a game I worked on last year. It's a free GBC rom! It's up in my shop for a few weeks, then I'll remove it. Ask me any question about it.

Working title screen for Eggbound.
Whipped up by the one and only @kc.wildnaturegames.net#screenshotsaturday#gameboy#gbstudio#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#retrogaming
I've been messing around with the idea of adding a little visual transition before the battle scene (mostly to hide a small visual glitch while I find a fix for it).
What do you guys think?
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#gameboy#pixelart#retrogaming
We did it.
We beat the unique tile limit for the DMG.
We now have access to an unlimited pool of monsters regardless of the current tileset.
By default, the maximum amount of unique monsters would've been 3 - And that's just not enough!
#gbstudio#gameboy#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#pixelart
We are extremely close to saying goodbye to the unique tile count restrictions for DMG mode in Eggbound. A few adjustments and we are set!
This will remove any sort of limit on how many monsters can appear inside of a dungeon. I was worried 3 unique monsters would be the limit, that is no longer.

Check out this super cool insect monster @azuresplashes.bsky.social whipped up.
You may recognize the very subtle nod to an iconic character.
The roster for Eggbound is growing at a rate that makes me very happy.

Yet another awesome monster sprite created by @azuresplashes.bsky.social for Eggbound, a monster collecting RPG being developed for the Nintendo Gameboy.
I'm pretty excited about this one! I think "Skelien" might be a good name for it.

Definitely one of my favorites.

I'd like to announce that @azuresplashes.bsky.social has joined the Eggbound team as a monster designer and sprite artist!
I'm really looking forward to showcasing more of the monsters he's created with you guys.
Here's a few for now!
#gameboy#pixelart#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#gbstudio
I've been drawing battles on the current scene. There was an issue with text drawing in the wrong spot due to the scene scrolling offsets,so I decided to split the dungeon and the battle into two separate scenes - but you'd probably never know!

Nothing spectacular, but I did do a bit of work using overlays to set up some more "fake" menus so the background continues to animate during selection.
Oh! And I animated the selection cursor sprite.
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#pixelart#retrogaming
I am obsessed with how good this turned out.
Respective party info now collapses when a monster is defeated and the background is animating flawlessly through dialogue and menus.
Basic battle system complete!
#gbstudio#gameboy#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#pixelart#retrogaming#retrogames
I've finished the basic attack system for battles. Turn order is set by speed (720 possible combinations for a 3v3) and is then executed. It scales down depending on how many monsters are in the battle.
Don't mind the test dialogues.
#gbstudio#gameboy#gamedev#indiedev#pixelart#indiegame
Did some work on expanding the battle system this evening. I now have it checking and sorting 6 unique monsters and creating a turn order according to their speed. Now I just need to attach actions to each turn slot.
Nothing to show for it yet, but I'll post a video when it's up and running.
Not a whole lot of time for gamedev today, so I combed through the battle system and removed any visual flickers, sped up the damage animation and added in a slight camera shake when an enemy attacks.
I think it looks pretty good.
#gbstudio#gameboy#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#pixelart
There is some variance for the final damage, but we're working with lil' numbers so it didn't show very well in the last post.
I still have to comb through and remove visual flickers, but it's nice to have something playable!
#gbstudio#gameboy#pixelart#indiegame#indiedev#gamedev#retrogaming
Here we go! A very basic battle system. Next we add more party members and some more enemies.
#gbstudio#gameboy#pixelart#indiegame#indiedev#gamedev#retrogaming#retrogames
Gotta start the tech demo somehow.
The video is a bit long, if you watched it all I appreciate you!
#gbstudio#gameboy#pixelart#indiegame#indiedev#gamedev#retrogaming#retrogames
I'm starting to put together a tech demo for Eggbound.
You'll start by naming your first monster. Then you'll be able to walk around a small cloud island encountering a few monsters to battle. Maybe one will join your party if you're lucky!
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#pixelart#gameboy
Been stuck doing lot of behind-the-scenes work lately. Nothing flashy to show, but I did do some work on the menu system.
BUT, that means it's time for the battle system!
#gbstudio#gameboy#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#retrogaming#pixelart
Starting work on the non-menu, menus!
All so the background will keep animating while making selections.
@kc.wildnaturegames.net really pulled through with this artwork.
#gbstudio#gameboy#indiegame#indiedev#pixelart#nintendo#retrogames#retrogaming#monstertaming#rpg#jrpg#gamedev
Tossed in a few monsters to implement the random encounter system. Still some work to be done, but we're making good progress!
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#gameboy#pixelart
The DMG is pretty limited in terms of drawing text. After a few short dialogues, the previous text starts to get overwritten.
I've implemented a new way of drawing text using the common tileset to stop that from happening.
Take that DMG limitations!
#gbstudio#gamedev#gameboy#indiedev
Implementing the battle system over the new tiles.
That moving background during the battle sure does look pretty slick!
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#nintendo#gameboy#pixelart
I'm starting to fight against some of the DMGs limitations. I really wanted the first iteration of this project to be for the DMG with some palette support for the GBC, but if it starts to interfere with the overall project I may have to consider abandoning that approach.
Revamping the info pages a bit due to all the heavy text drawing. Got a bit more optimizing to do before I'll be happy, but we're getting there.
I'm trying to keep the screen transitions as limited as possible.
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#pixelart#gameboy
Just wanted to showcase some work that's been done on the new tiles. Thanks @kc.wildnaturegames.net!
The follower system is now working flawlessly alongside the screen scrolling mechanic.
Next up is finishing the battle system.
#gbstudio#gamedev#indiedev#indiegame#gameboy#pixelart
This is just a video showcasing mostly UI stuff. I'm hoping to dive a bit deeper into the battle system and the scrolling map mechanics in the next video!

Added a bit of pressure to the song input capture mechanic (it's a placeholder for now).
#gamedev#indiedev#gameboy#gbstudio#indiegame#nintendo#pixelart#retrogaming#retrogames
The idea is that in Eggbound, monster tamers are equipped with a whistle. This allows them to get the attention of their monsters in battle and give them commands.
But they can also play a song to convince monsters to join them!
#gbstudio#gameboy#indiegame#indiedev#gamedev#retrogaming
I've got some pre-orders coming to my shop soon... maybe even today? I'm releasing a new monster collecting card game called Monster-Pak, and I'm also putting PKMN Gold & Silver poker decks up for pre-order.
The Top Down Followers plugin for GB Studio has been updated!
-Now compatible with the latest version (4.2.2)
-Now supports both 8 and 16 pixel grid modes
Get it and all my other GB Studio plugins on Github github.com/shin-gamedev...
The follower system has been implemented! Which is huge!
Most of the smaller systems have now been completed and I can move forward onto the battle system.
We're getting close to a technical demo!
#gbstudio#gameboy#gamedev#indiegame#indiedev#retrogaming
The name input system is complete!
In Eggbound, every monster in your party needs a name!
Thanks @critcorsac.bsky.social for the tips!
