Coming down with the sickness again, maybe there are codebase visualizations that are useful. Interactive with bidirectional editor integration and runtime analysis. Apologies for the slop prototype.

editors always feel like magnifying lenses. I've always wanted to have the fluidity of the editor for higher level navigation. Profiling tools sometimes have ways to navigate an editor or view code blocks, but I think we can go farther. Maybe these are just sicko thoughts.

The VGGT vision transformer model couldn't really handle mixed time of day images, but this new Apache-2 licensed model is a big step up. Variable lighting and weather really mess with existing VPS solutions. A popular one needs two scans at least 5 hours apart. map-anything.github.io

Here is a VGGT example where all but one image is from daytime. The single nighttime image fails to integrate and is estimated to be in the free space to the left, outside the view of the daytime images.

Got the mesh registration to run in ~100ms, down from 400ms, by fusing the kernels and moving the correspondence work to the gpu. The extra time is from deserializing the test data. bsky.app/profile/v1se...

Moved ISS to the GPU to join FPFH, now the full ISS + FPFH + TEASER pipeline runs in under 400ms for typical environments on Vision Pro. Red mesh is the prior saved one we are searching for in the blue mesh.

The VGGT model works as a VPS with only a few images. One attention head estimates the 6dof camera pose of each image. Here is a rough example with 7 warped Mapillary images and 1 XR headset camera image in red. While the error is about 2m, you couldn't do this at all with SfM.

Making block worlds spherical comes with a lot of trade-off. I think this person made some smart compromises such as the vertical block layers. For an AR world-wide block game this is great as all worlds can use the same earth centered origin.

I got some very promising 3d sidewalk point cloud data from unwarping Mapillary data and feeding it to VGGT(Visual Geometry Grounded Transformer). The output seems much better than traditional Structure from Motion + Multi-View Stereo dense reconstruction.

I think I've hit the limit for GPS accuracy in the city for AR positioning. One path forward could be doing mesh registration on a 3d model of the city. Maybe by running Structure from Motion on the street level Mapillary data. Maybe combined with USGS airborne Lidar.

Alleyway GPS sensor fusion test. Head position in white. GPS in red. Fused state in green. It is tuned for open fields and forests, but maybe with a bit more math this could hit sub meter accuracy. At this scale the odometry is very accurate.

So you want to build Mountain-Scale AR for current hardware? Maybe like Snap's Spectacles devkit does it now? For vision pro you can do this by reading the headset position(odometry) and a iPhone gps position.

There are companies working on building a 3d map of the world for this, most are hopeless (like MeshMap), but a few have a shot by building the most comprehensive surveillance machine on the planet. The only other use case is for military C2, but I will not jingopost on main.

Go build a SaaS, do anything but this. Go read Probabilistic Robotics if this siren song beckons you. This might be obvious, but I didn't see any public examples. This is how the compass and other crap all work. It's a bit like drawing the rest of the owl, but good luck and goodbye.

This gets to around 2m accuracy, but to get better you have to combine this with data of the local environment. Hence why I was running mesh registration via ISS + FPFH + TEASER++ on device.

I only optimized mine to run in 400ms, so pretty slow, I'll let someone else talk about doing this well. At this level the hard part is detecting what parts of the world are temporary.

The filter also provides variance estimates you can use for tracking quality levels, something Snap didn't expose to users for their north heading component at launch. I found it easiest to pass this all through a state machine.

You can handle complete tracking loss by detecting WorldAnchor state, below 10 is failure. You can then use this estimated state to transform entities to gps coordinates with compass bearings.

We can unwarp this and get the north heading by estimating a four component state with an Augmented Unscented Kalman Filter. We can't use a basic Kalman Filter because the north heading state introduces non-linearity to our model.

For each gps measurement we can predict our position using the delta in the odometry in that warped global space then update our state using the measured gps position. With a little tuning you will be able to converge in about 50-100 feet and maintain it for miles.

The issues are we don't know what way is north, the odometry drifts by say 100m every 1-2km, and the odometry origin 'recenters' if we walk ~0.3km.

The high level idea is to leave a trail of ARKit WorldAnchors deleting old ones so that when recentering happens you can compute the linear transformation between these reference frames. So you have this very warped path from the odometry and the gps data.

I was surprised to find NOAA publishes the 3d weather forecast data for the continental US + Alaska. This appears to match observations of nearby mountains. Very little smoke today. I get why hiking apps don't provide search on this data now :), but there might be a way.

Would anyone actually try a free outdoor navigation app for the vision pro? The tech works in the mountains, but it is too dangerous to recommend outside flat parks. My initial tests were putting a 10m tall pushpin at a gps coordinate and keeping it there for miles.

@scottstein.bsky.social The frustrating part is that Apple does not make it easy to just share some code with others. I hope with a lot of disclaimers users will be responsible. bsky.app/profile/v1se...

To ensure my XR gps localization system works in diverse locales I found some snow. No underlying platform(visionOS) tracking loss even in fresh snow. I recorded all the sensor data for testing algorithm improvements offline.

AI agent that commutes around on the real-time transit data. posts about missing a transfer. call it Claude Commute.

Working on a little website to find hikes. One feature is filtering by weather forecast. Very thankful for the open data from NOAA and the USGS. All the blue dots are the real-time positions of nearly 1000 buses and ferries.
