Why do we care about surplus so much? Instead of business revenue becoming profit that goes to CEOs or shareholders, revenues from VAWC co-ops become surplus going to workers, retained earnings that feed back into community businesses, and is invested in loans to other co-ops in our communities.

Since '08, VAWC co-ops: • Earned $536k in surplus, adding $960k in local spending • Stabilized income for workers & prices for consumers • Added to "Main Street" activity through restaurant, grocery, cultural events etc • Invested $32K in worker co-ops, including 5 direct micro-loans to members

VAWC Co-ops keep surplus local, retaining jobs & infrastructure in our communities. This way profits don't leave our region. Since 2008, VAWC Co-ops have distributed $536K in surplus to their members, communities, and their own growth. Surplus is decided by co-op members, not external shareholders.

We are happy to join co-ops around the world in celebrating #CoopsDay today, on July 4th. This year's theme "Cooperatives for a Peaceful World" is reminder that peace begins in our communities, through dialogue, solidarity, and cooperation.

In times where we see our values under attack and our communities repressed, we want to come back to the principles and values of co-ops to work towards a better day with equity, education, democracy, and solidarity.

Let's get ready! We look forward to joining co-ops around the world on International Co-ops Day this July 4th. We want the message of peace and cooperation to have justice and regenerative relations to permeate the world. #gocoop #coopsforapeacefulworld #CoopsDay #WorkerCooperatives

Today and every day, we celebrate the history, culture, and excellence of the Black community. ❤️ We honor the past and celebrate the present of #Juneteenth. It is also a day where we recognize the work that still needs to be done to promote greater equity. Onward in the struggle.

We stand in solidarity with workers everywhere. VAWC honors the work and sacrifice so many have made to improve our lives and we pledge to keep fighting to emancipate all labor. #mayday #InternationalWorkersDay #workercooperatives Thanks to all our members, affiliates, and supporters and #gocoop

We honor International Women's Day & the fight for gender equality. DYK women have had the right to vote in their co-ops since the 1840’s, before political suffrage? #Facts: Our board & reps are 50% or more women & one member co-op is 100% women #internationalwomensday #equality #gocoop #equity

Co-ops LOVE Community. Co-ops are rooted in and owned by people in the community. Worker co-ops deliver goods and services that strengthen local economies through equitable employment. #gocoop #cooplove #concernforcommunity #principe7 #coopsforcommunity

Co-ops LOVE Intercooperation on Valentine's Day and every day. VAWC is one expression of how co-ops can work together for legislation, development, education and more. VAWC co-ops purchase goods and services from other co-ops, too. #gocoop #cooplove #coopssupportcoops #principe6 #coopsforcommunity

Co-ops LOVE Education on Valentine's Day and every day. It allows them to self-govern and determine their own direction. They can choose who they do business with, preserve democratic control, and create associations to build strength. #gocoop #cooplove #autonomy #Principle4 #CoopsBuildABetterWorld

Co-ops LOVE Autonomy on Valentine's Day & every day It allows them to self-govern and determine their own direction. They choose who they do business with, preserving democratic structure and can create associations to build strength. #gocoop #cooplove #autonomy #Principle4 #CoopsBuildABetterWorld

Co-ops LOVE Equity on Valentine's Day & everyday Members contribute to their co-op, and if there is any money left over, members decide how it is distributed. This benefits members' patronage, builds reserves, and supports communities. #gocoop #cooplove #equity #Principle3 #CoopsBuildABetterWorld

Co-ops LOVE democracy. Every member has a voice and equal voting rights for its board. Co-ops use one member, one vote regardless of your job or how much money you have. #gocoop #cooplove #democracy #Principle2 #ConcernForCommunity

Co-ops welcome all to become members. They do not discriminate against gender, race, social status, sexual orientation, or anything else. Co-ops operate on a one member, one vote democratic operation, *not* one dollar, one vote. #gocoop #cooplove #equality #principle1 #cooperativesbuildabetterworld

Great info in here. We're proud to be part of adding to these numbers that have stories, people, hearts, democracy, and so much more behind them. Did you know that Massachusetts has the 3rd highest number of worker co-ops in the country? And Vermont has the eighth? Thanks DAWI & @usworker.coop
