Politicians, elected leaders, & government officials can turn the crime issue from a liability to a strength by going on offense & establishing their own brand as being "serious about safety." The winning strategy is not to focus on fear, but on evidence-based solutions that make communities safer.

Crime is going down in spite of Trump’s policies, not because of them. If government leaders can't lean in and take ownership of falling crime rates—especially in blue cities where crime has dropped the most thanks to comprehensive prevention strategies—they're leaving money on the table.

As violence has fallen dramatically in New Orleans, experts point to investments like trauma recovery and mobile crisis response. Our message to leaders considering the 2027 city budget: don’t cut the programs that have worked to keep New Orleans safe. thelensnola.org/2026/10/21/n...

CORCA is a bill moving through Congress that would expand federal surveillance powers under the guise of fighting organized retail theft. As concerns about privacy grow, so does uncertainty about the bill's future. Here's what you need to know: www.vera.org/news/corca-l...

Amid continued attacks on due process, immigrant New Yorkers face a new obstacle: remote deportation judges. While immigration attorneys and families fill courtrooms in Manhattan, newly hired judges preside virtually from undisclosed locations.

When immigrant survivors of domestic abuse call 911, they expect a lifeline. But right now, instead of care and support, their calls for help are turning into a pipeline for ICE detention.

Drawing on journalist Maurice Chammah’s series on the epic story of music in American prisons, @themarshallproject.org's one-night event "Redemption Songs Live" explores how genres from the blues to soul to rap have offered paths to rehabilitation, resistance, and hope for people behind bars.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is taking concrete steps on community safety and accountability by expanding gun violence prevention services and appointing four experts in criminal prosecution, public defense, civil rights advocacy, and violence prevention to the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

“Their appointments, alongside the leadership of Chair Jennifer Jones Austin, should give all New Yorkers the confidence that police will be held to an appropriately high professional and ethical standard as they do the important work of keeping us safe.” Our full statement:

Creating a city that is safe and provides justice for all New Yorkers requires a multipronged approach. We applaud the Mamdani administration for taking meaningful action this week to connect New Yorkers to the care they need to thrive and interrupt cycles of harm.

ICE is opening a facility in Louisiana to hold children and families who choose voluntary departure. This is an increasingly common outcome under the Trump administration's mass deportation campaign, a choice that many are forced to make without a lawyer.

At the Annual Legislative Conference, Vera co-hosted a roundtable discussion about safety and justice with the @cbc.house.gov Foundation. Joined by advocates, leaders, and lawmakers, we discussed what it truly takes to keep our communities safe: community-led strategies that prevent crime.

"Effective, accountable policing alongside comprehensive crime prevention was a cornerstone of Mamdani’s campaign. It must remain the guiding principle of his administration." Vera's Insha Rahman and Hans Menos on public safety in a @nydailynews.com op-ed:

Though the Trump administration claims it is not arresting U.S. citizens by mistake or making indiscriminate stops, the exact opposite is unfolding and at a large scale: 506 U.S. citizens have been detained since January 2025.

ICE and DHS agents’ reckless operations bypass due process and tear families apart, subjecting Americans to racial profiling, unlawful home entries, and violent arrests. New reporting by @propublica.org uncovers the full scope and the significant human toll of federal immigration enforcement ⬇️

"We’ve taken a community survey for three years, and in that survey, when people are asked what are the things that would make their community safe, police are not in the top five of those things." -Sarah Omojola, Vera Louisiana Director

“Not every child deserves asylum, but every child deserves to be heard.”—Robert Carey, director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement during the Obama administration

In #Arizona, a one-year-old baby appeared without a lawyer to file an asylum application. In #Texas, a seven-year-old agreed to voluntarily leave the country. In 55 percent of nearly 50,000 immigration cases closed by August, unaccompanied minors faced deportation without legal representation.

nytimes.comMigrant Children Without Lawyers Face Fast-Tracked Deportations AloneFor years, the government has helped secure lawyers for minors who arrive at the southern border. But a contract dispute has forced many children to face immigration judges alone.

Without legal counsel to guide them through complex court proceedings, children face fast-tracked deportations entirely alone, unaware of the life-altering consequences. To learn more about the impacts of children’s declining access to legal representation, click here ⬇️

Resources being spent on surveillance tech like Flock cameras could be reallocated toward solutions that have been proven to make communities safer; things like good schools, job training, youth services and affordable housing.

Despite the onslaught of cruel actions, our partners and legal aid groups keep fighting back to ensure the fair treatment of immigrants under the law.

Despite "tough-on-crime" rhetoric at the federal level, states across the political spectrum are leading the charge toward a system that delivers safety, justice, and accountability. Vera's new report breaks down state-level progress on criminal justice reform in 2026:

Conditions in the jails on Rikers Island are dangerous and inhumane—far past the point of repair. Too many people leave Rikers more unstable than when they came in, which makes us all less safe. We encourage New York City’s effort to close Rikers on the fastest timeline possible.

barrons.comNew York's Notorious Rikers Jail Awaits Elusive ClosureNew York's notorious Rikers Island jail, long criticized for unsanitary and violent conditions, will miss a deadline for the vast complex to close down, prompting disappointment from activists.

"We see the closure of Rikers Island as part of shutting the door on what has been a stained history in our city of a correctional system that does nothing to serve the people in its custody or the staff that work there every day," said Close Rikers Czar Dana Kaplan.

“When a federal agency is given extraordinary resources and power without meaningful accountability, the result is fear, cruelty, and chaos.”—Vera’s Shayna Kessler

Last night, an ICE officer shot and injured a man sitting in a car in New York City. There was a five-year-old child in the same car. The officer fired at least seven bullets. This is yet another terrifying failure of public safety.

We cannot let the mass deportation dragnet continue to terrorize our communities. Democracy and accountability depend on a system built on safety and justice that protects, not harms. A system that strengthens neighborhoods, not tears them apart. Our full statement ⬇️

The U.S. immigration court system is intended to provide a fair judicial process, yet the Trump administration’s latest plan does the opposite: assigning Department of Health and Human Services attorneys to represent unaccompanied migrant children in immigration court.

motherjones.comTrump administration plans to have its own lawyers represent migrant kidsPutting government counsel on both sides "makes me feel like it's all a farce," says one immigration attorney.

True due process requires independent representation for immigrants, not an arrangement where the government sits on both sides of the courtroom.

As crime rates plummet nationally—a trend experts attribute to comprehensive safety investments—Republicans continue to bash Democrats for being "soft on crime." But voters see right through it. The political reign of "tough on crime" is coming to an end.

nytimes.com‘It’s Not an Issue’: Crime as a G.O.P. Line of Attack Loses TractionAcross the country, especially in the North Carolina Senate race, Republicans have charged opponents with being soft on crime, even as crime rates plummet.

In North Carolina, Republicans have spent $18.5 million in ads attacking Democrat Roy Cooper over lawlessness and violence. But it’s falling flat — polls show Cooper consistently leading his Republican opponent, Michael Whatley.
