Halloween post #27: Speaking of creepy-but-funny movie-based video games, one that has a surprisingly detailed ending on the NES, recreating its ending scenes (in a time when many movie-based games cheaped out with textual endings), is Sunsoft's Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

For VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas, @darklordzagato.bsky.social submitted Chubby Cherub, (Capcom's) Gold Medal Challenge '92, and Puss N Boots: Pero's Great Adventure today. Now there are only 101 official North American NES games left to map! 😀 bsky.app/profile/vgma...

Happy 41st birthday to the NES! The NES section is the largest one on VGMaps.com: The Video Game Atlas, but there are 104 North American NES games that still haven't been mapped! If a NES game ISN'T in this image, we've got its maps! If it IS here, consider contributing some screenshot maps of it!

Halloween post #26: Speaking of Super NES secrets, here's one accessible at the beginning of a game, rather than the end! In The Addams Family, there are hidden rooms, starting with an invisible door in the lower-left of the Hall Of Stairs, full of power-ups, money, and 1ups!

Halloween post #25: Speaking of Castlevania tricks, here's one for Super Castlevania IV (Super NES). Jump down before the stairs that lead to Dracula to find invisible platforms, and down here, power-ups will rain on you, so you'll be more ready for the final confrontation!

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! 8-bit's the most classic, but if you want more official stages, try Super Mario Advance 4 (GBA) with the e-Reader peripheral & cards. If you don't have all that, you can play them all on Wii U VC and NSO's "Nintendo Classics" GBA app!

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! Japanese release, that is! I discovered Super Mario Bros. 3 at an import games shop at West Edmonton Mall. SMB2 was still hot then, so my mind was blown to see SMB3 already! I rented and played it a ton, long before seeing "The Wizard".

Today, everyone has the Internet, games come out at the same time worldwide, and if they don't, importing is so easy. It is better overall, but I kind of miss the feeling of being "in the know" by being familiar with Japanese games before they came out in North America.

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! In the Canadian manual, French is below, English is on top. Rather than copy and paste, Morton's name is misspelled "Montron" in Canadian English (not French), ironic since it sounds like Montréal, the most-known French-Canadian city!

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3! Before switching from bimonthly to monthly, Nintendo Power dedicated one of its four "Strategy Guide" issues to Super Mario Bros. 3. Don't you just love the original artwork that guides used to have, before it became all in-game assets?

Happy 38th birthday to Super Mario Bros. 3 (based on Japanese release, but it's already tomorrow there; oops)! I have the Famicom version & three NTSC NES versions: "Left Bros.", "Right Bros.", and Canadian/red banner. Always amuses me that I got the "Left Bros." from "Two Brothers Games" on eBay!

Halloween post #22: In Beyond Shadowgate (2024, Steam), if you don't prepare the body properly when burying it, when you dissolve the phantom, you're set on the path to the bad ending! Poor imp! I get chills; the sudden stop of the music is VERY effective at bringing unease! More than visuals do...

Randomly thought about antipodes, which are opposite sides of Earth. I noticed that New Zealand and Spain are antipodes. New Zealand has hobbits, Spain has Vega (Street Fighter). Vega's name in Japan is "Balrog". For hobbits to face Balrog, they'd have to pass through the MIDDLE of EARTH. WHOA...?😯

Halloween post #21: Hopefully you don't consider it a spoiler that Beyond Shadowgate is connected to not just Shadowgate, but also to Uninvited & Deja Vu (but it was mentioned in its trailers)... An encounter with the Ghost Lady from Uninvited happens in Beyond Shadowgate too!

If you can believe it, it was exactly 10 years ago today since Nintendo publicly revealed the Switch. Sandra Shapiro would get a little bit of fame as she was named "Nintendo Karen" by the Internet for her part in bringing Super Mario Odyssey to a roofrop party one decade ago.

A guy incorrectly "corrected" me by INSISTING this is a "Wiimote" when I called it by its official name, "Wii Remote". I asked for an in-game screenshot showing "Wiimote"; he said I "must be fun at parties", but he's the one who dragged it out. "You must be fun at parties" is so lame and cliché.

Also, if people are going to correct others, maybe they should first check on what they're claiming, before they do a self-own by looking stupid when they insist on incorrect information that was easily confirmed to be otherwise. And then if proven wrong, why double down on it?

In less nitpicky news, it's scary that in about a month, the Wii will be 20 years old - I still remember the day I got my Wii, and I was already an adult, a few years after university. Just made myself feel old. There are grown adults today who don't remember Nintendo, pre-Wii.

In Alberta, there is still a horde of angry, smooth-brained rednecks on the verge of exploding. After losing the referendum vote, they're going to come up with excuses and complain MORE, probably not happy with Danielle Smith. As they say, "cope harder". bsky.app/profile/vgma...

A bunch of angry, smooth-brained rednecks on the verge of exploding. That's what I expect to see tomorrow, here in Alberta, at the polls for the referendum question about a binding referendum on Alberta separating from Canada.

Halloween post #20: Is it neat or freaky to have a mirror smashable into space in both Shadowgate (NES) and Beyond Shadowgate (PC)? I always thought this was a cool thing to keep between both games. The purple planet is a reference to "Infested", another game by GrahfMetal.

Hmm, I thought I'd see some angry Alberta separatists respond to this. Maybe for the best, if they keep their mouths shut. Hoping to see them lose when the votes are all counted! Preferably by a lot. I'll be going to vote today. No to the Nine! Vote Option #1!

Some people are so thin-skinned. I said I enjoyed the Street Fighter movie and somebody blocked me over that. Me enjoying a film is not an affront to you if you dislike it, which you are just as allowed to do. Do you also block people if they have a different favourite colour?

Halloween post #19: Okay, I've posted a lot of Maniac Mansion in recent days, time to segue away from it... In Beyond Shadowgate (2024), the true sequel to the NES classic Shadowgate, there is a purple tentacle and a textual reference to Maniac Mansion in Themeire Mansion.
