ABC's anti-public space campaigning in the last few weeks is gross and dishonest. Here's the latest: an effort to score cheap points against the Green Party for a proposal that (a) was passed by Council 6 years ago (May 27, 2020) & (b) supported by Councillors currently running with ABC. 🧵

It can take DECADES to deliver individual parks (etc.) like this. So while the approach might help create some public space, it won't help to achieve the type, diversity or distribution of amenities needed to keep up with growth and demand.

Our post is not an endorsement of the Greens - rather just a statement of profound frustration with ABC for running with this position. It is disappointing to see a party that purports to have an awareness and interest in public space issues post something so profoundly out of touch.

... and, in general, less car-choked streets and more amenity rich neighbourhoods - then being able to *strategically* utilize the street right-of-way to create these things makes incredibly good sense.

Not only does ABC's messaging stink - all gaslighting and cheap populism - but it is inaccurate (notice the reference to losing sidewalks), stupid from a both a land use and transportation planning perspective, and fiscally irresponsible in terms of the City budget.

After 7 intense rounds, a field of 33 contestants was winnowed down to just one #LastCandidateStanding. Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the winner of the 6th edition of our municipal debate mixer: 🎉 FRANCES BULA!! 🎉 A big thank you to everyone that took part. Congrats Frances!

Set 2.6 Q: On development proposals from developers with poor track records. Kasiama: We should build up smaller innovative developers. Clemens: We need to hold these developers accountable or there will be penalties. Hagglund: We need to go after developers who let properties sit empty.

Set 2.4 Q: How do you plan to protect against climate-related hazards? Bula: We need to incorporate cooling building designs. Sauriol: We need to make sure that we expand green corridors across the city. Bonamis: We need to start retrofitting our most vulnerable homes with cooling devices.

Set 2.3 Q: Should anything change about how Vancouver Police handles public drug use? Reilly: Cops taking drugs away is not going to fix addiction. Fry: Confiscating drugs will exacerbate survival-based crimes. Boychuk: We need to create programs to help people get off the streets.

We're excited to be moving on to Round 2 for Last Candidate Standing. We have 22 out of 38 candidates advancing to the next round. Keep an eye out to see who survives this next round of questions!

We honour the survivors of residential schools and reflect on the fact that many children never made it home to their families and communities. We think of the pain and intergenerational trauma that the system has perpetuated, and the essential work of healing that needs to take place.

We recommit to doing what we can to support reconciliation in our work, to challenge residential school denialism and anti-Indigenous racism, and to seek ways to work in right relation with Indigenous peoples and organizations.

Given the unusual timing & challenges, Vancouver’s Granville Street pedestrian zone 7-Week extension since the World Cup ended is one of the most important street transformation pilots in North America. The public support for the street has been remarkable. This week/weekend is the last. Come see.

WATCH: If you’re interested in turning streets for cars into places for people, aka “pedestrian streets” (a VERY limiting term), watch my new podcast interview with @downtownvan.bsky.social. Discusses Vancouver’s pedestrianized Granville Street that I’ve been helping with, but relevant to ANY city.
