hmm... my phone took a dive out of my jacket pocket and now the display's black level is all washed out up to about half brightness.... may be an unscheduled fox fix later today

I love seeing other cartoon animals posting about electronics repair.. makes me feel all warm and fuzzy (well moreso than usual x3). like ohhh... that's my people 💛

today's fox fix is the first of three(!) pokemon go plus+ units, all sent to me for my auto-catch and brightness mods. these were actually all brand new, so I took care to open the box in a way that it could be resealed and opened as new again. some of my cleanest mod work if I do say so myself 🪛🦊✨

I tried some mx-4 to see how it performed but there was no improvement... I disassembled it today to find the exact same pattern, despite spreading it over the whole die. it seems between the heatsink gap and high temperatures, anything other than thick thermal putty will just melt in the quest 3 😬

while I was able to repair that quest 3 after I identified the camera issue, I noted the fan was spinning up like crazy just in the initial setup screen. I thought to check the factory thermal paste application, and... you kinda *really* aren't supposed to be able to see a third of the cpu lol

that does seem to have sorted it, after idling in steamvr for a while it was around 75C. I do think it could be lower with a copper shim and better thermal compound but this is perfectly alright 🦊👍

experimenting with a stripped down vive tracker for headset-mounted mixed playspace calibration in vr; it can operate over USB without a battery (though it seems to need 5V minimum). the stripped down tracker is around 27 grams instead of 72 grams, which is important when it is on your face 🦊🥽

I went to remove the tracker I had previously mounted to the headset, and after yanking the thing off the adhesion was so clean and even that it left a perfect negative of the printing in the rubber. I absolutely love this hot glue lol

was reminded of this again; here is an old video demonstrating the rgb lighting I designed in the buttons and turntable. I love beatmania iidx... it's too cool...

recorded this for a friend but thought it would be fun to share here as well, I dug out my beatmania IIDX controller and explained how I had designed some custom RGB wedge LED PCBs for the button lighting (and also some cursed wiring to get it actually working haha) www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKny...

good news bad news on repairing the other quest 3... the side camera that was causing a boot loop is working after a good cleaning, and the headset works properly with a good front panel assembly. the bad news is the corroded IMU in the other front panel is beyond saving, despite my best efforts...

I've had a number of people now ask me for tips on how to get started in repair, or tell me that they started trying to fix things because they saw me doing it, and every time it makes me so happy :3 it's such a rewarding and useful skill, and so uplifting to see people care to repair 🪛🦊💛

additional benefits of the hotglued vive tracker: makes for an excellent stand while I am part swapping to try and get the other quest 3 working :P

the hotglued quest 2 vive tracker's legacy lives on..... permanent temporary solution of kings

scampering around a bit in #vrchat and talking to myself about how my recently repaired (and rooted) quest 3 might just be exactly what I have been wanting from vr 🦊🥽✨

it was a troubleshooting and part-swapping nightmare that required *multiple* full disassembly and reassemblies, but I finally have pieced together one functional and rooted quest 3. now time to get on vrchat and play with my friends 🦊🐾

doing the "YOU" cat grab meme at this thing; this is why that first quest 3 was stalling at a black screen. after some part swapping with the second unit, I found the behavior followed the housing itself; on a hunch I disconnected the right camera and it immediately went to os. I wonder why 😬

this does mean I technically didn't need to buy a second repair unit... but on the other hand I now have a bunch of spare components and a second functional motherboard on a low firmware for rooting, so it is not so bad overall 🦊👍

not a very happy fix fox today... my quest 3 arrived for repair, and while it should have been a simple firmware flash to fix an update bootloop, it turned into a full teardown to try to find a hardware fault, to no avail... no headset upgrade for me until I source a working motherboard

this second unit was listed as bootloop but was found to have a black screen issue, though crucially was actually booting into the OS unlike the first unit. I had read this is a camera/sensor fault, and I'm pretty sure this is the cause... a *ton* of corrosion around the 6-axis IMU IC

I've done my auto-catch and brightness mod on around 30 pokemon go plus +'s by now, but I just got my first request for modding as a service, instead of selling pre-modded units. this wags the tail ✨🦊✨

today's fox fix is another pokemon go plus+! this unit only had a broken top button, which was an easy fix. I have also refined my great/ultra ball auto catch mod down to just one transistor and two wires, along with the 2.8v LED brightness mod from the (now) unused vibration motor. these are fun 🦊👍

well, this thing is mine now after some back and forth with eBay (I did get my funds back!); now that I'm cleaning it up for repair and proper modding, I can confirm they did in fact use solder as a jumper wire for their auto-catch mod. Good Lord

guess who's dealing with 🎶 return fraud 🎶

while I wish the previous repair tech hadn't completely torched the USB port on this OLED switch, I must admit the resulting iridescence is absolutely gorgeous 🦊🔎🌈

a routine fox fix for today; this OLED switch had error 2101-0001 on boot, caused by USB port damage which also damaged the charging IC, and also the 5V USB output regulator (which I found later on). after replacing all three, the switch is booting, charging, and powering USB peripherals 🦊👍
