Louis Brandies was a prominent lawyer and later a justice of the Supreme Court. He opposed commercial and industrial bigness. On Jan. 23. 1915, he testified that "the greatest danger to the people of the United States today is in becoming, as they are gradually more and more, a class of employees."

USS Liberty attack by Israel. From USN History and Heritage Command: www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-to...

history.navy.milThe "Six-Day War" and USS LibertyIn June 1967, in response to escalating Arab-Israeli hostilities, USS Liberty (AGTR-5) was operating in the Mediterranean in international waters conducting an intelligence collection mission. Sixth Fleet had received orders in late May to move into the region in response to the withdrawal of the United Nations Emergency Force from Sinai. While operating off the north coast of the Sinai Peninsula on the afternoon of 8 June, in the midst of the Arab-Israeli “Six-Day War” (5–10 June 1967), Liberty was attacked with multiple strafing runs by two unidentified jet fighters—presumed to be Israeli. Twenty minutes later, after first circling Liberty, three motor torpedo boats from Israeli MTB Division 914 closed in at high speeds and launched five torpedoes, of which one, fired from T-203, hit the ship and exploded between frames 53 to 66, tearing a tear-drop shaped hole in the starboard side, 39 feet across at its widest point. Twenty members of Liberty’s crew were killed instantly. Of the 293 U.S. personnel on board the ship, 34 (31 Sailors, two Marines, and one National Security Agency civilian) were killed and another 170 wounded. In the immediate aftermath, Israel did apologize, expressed deep regret, and offered assistance (Liberty refused due to the sensitive nature of its mission), but debates continue about whether the Israeli attack was premeditated or a tragic accident resulting from negligent mistakes or the fog of war. Evidence based on Liberty survivor’s reports and from declassified Navy court of inquiry findings and national agency reporting that the Israelis deliberately attacked what they knew to be an American ship remains contested. After the attack, Liberty departed the area and slowly made way to Valetta, Malta, for temporary repairs, before continuing on to Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Virginia, for more extensive repairs. After the ship was deemed “prohibitively costly” to repair, Liberty was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 June 1970 and later sold for scrap.  Liberty was subsequently awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the Combat Action Ribbon. As Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., later wrote, “Heroism was the order of the day.” Lieutenant Commander Philip Armstrong Jr., executive officer of Liberty, was awarded the Navy Cross (posthumously). Silver Star Medals were awarded to 11 crewmembers (two posthumously), and 19 were awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Commander William L. McGonagle, in a ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard on 11 June 1968, was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his “superb professionalism, courageous fighting spirit, and valiant leadership.”

The Department of Justice, as we knew it, ceased to exist when Trump took office in 2005. Bondi, and later Blanche, transformed DOJ into Trump's personal law firm. It became Trump's primary tool in exacting retribution against Trump's perceived enemies. "Justice" is now Orwellian for "retribution."

As I went up through the ranks in the USN, my various mentors and leaders taught me leadership. One of the most important of those lessons was to always be mindful of the welfare of your people. With regard to the 1,000+ families who were at the naval base in Bahrain, Hegseth is a failed leader.

I'm 87. I served 20 years in the USN, monitoring the threat from Russia. But then I retired and Trump and MAGA happened, and, despite what Trump says, the Russian threat continues. I am worried about the future of the USA and I feel helpless, but not hopeless.

Hegseth reportedly is in Israel conferring with Netanyahu and his staff about resuming attacks on Iran after the midterms. Is there anyone in the administration with enough intelligence to realize that the attacks on Iran are producing zero results. Any good poker player knows when it's time to fold

The witless Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy to Russia, told Putin that he (Putin) was a "humanitarian." Putin's troops in and near Ukraine are guilty of kidnapping Ukrainian children, executing civilians whose bodies were buried in a mass grave. These are not the actions of a humanitarian.

Trump must be replaced as commander-in-chief and Hegseth must be unceremoniously thrown out if the Pentagon and into the nearest gutter. Any USN officers who failed to immediately evacuate the dependent spouses and children in Bahrain should be punished and separated. /s/ Once-proud USN retiree.

Nicolle Wallace's show "Deadline Washington" just had a shocking segment about the gross incompetence of Trump, as commander-in-chief; the idiot Hegseth, as SecDef; and various Navy commands with regard to the damage to the base in Bahrain and the total abandonment of wives and children.

Trump is guilty of many terrible crimes, but among the most heinous is what he and his associates in crime have done to children. He has arrested and imprisoned children as young as five. He has left children, some infants, stranded when parents were arrested. These are despicable, shameful acts.

The most serious threats to the U.S. armed forces are Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth. Both should be removed ASAP for the good of the armed forcesc and the U.S.A.

Regarding the dispute over the term "artificial intelligence," which was raised by Trump: Who in this administration can reasonably be considered capable of determining anything to do with the English language or anything to do with intelligence, human or otherwise.

It is remarkably evil--even for Trump--to talk so casually about destroying two American cities. But Trump is a very sick man who should never have been elected. When he made his outrageous comment some in the audience applauded. Is this what our beloved country is becoming?

With regard to Trump's outrageous comments about Iran taking out Los Angeles and San Diego, it is very important to note that his MAGA audience applauded the comment. In addition, the reaction from Republican leaders is noteworthy by their silence. Their lack of patriotism is deplorable.

Trump must be removed from office and I no longer care how that is to be accomplished. The comment last night about letting Iran take out Los Angeles and San Diego is so outrageous that anyone who claims to be an American has an obligation to condemn the comment and the idiot who made the comment.

Pete Hegseth, our pathetic SecDef, says he wants "no radicals" in the military. In fact, Hegseth himself is a radical right-winger as well as being a radical Christian, although his behavior, now and in the past, bears no resemblance to the teachings of Christ.

Having Hegseth direct military operations is like giving a toddler a loaded, cocked firearm. Hegseth should go back to his favorite bars and the places where he would go onstage and dance with scantily clad young women. He was never competent to be anywhere near the Pentagon.

Some say that Trump destroyed the Republican Party. That is untrue. The party was destroyed by Republicans who were willing to abandon their principles and who lacked the courage to fight for their party and instead pledge their loyalty to Donald Trump. Republicans destroyed their own party.

MAGA supporters may be loyal to Trump and the conservative Republicans, but they cannot also be loyal Americans. To be a loyal American demands a modicum of decency and a loyalty to our Constitution and respect for the rule of law. These attributes are anathema to MAGA ideology.

It is debatable who is more dangerous: Kash Patel or Pete Hegseth. Both beer guzzlers have attempted to drive out of their organizations people who are perceived to be on the far side of the political divide. These days, a government employee is either a Trump loyalist or an enemy of the state.

The AP is reporting that Trump is ordering more ships and personnel to the area offshore Iran. The personnel will include 7,000 sailors and 2,000 marines. The surface contingent will include USS Theodore Roosevelt, her escorts and amphibious support ships.

The political pundits say that Trump is on the ballot. Voters must also realize that ICE, concentration camps, data centers, corruption at DOJ and the FBI, the sorry state of the DOD, and health insurance are also on the ballot. Vote Blue!

Pundits are wondering why Trump is campaigning in solid red states instead of in states that are more competitive. I think his decision has nothing to do with strategy but everything to do with Trump's love of performing in front of friendly audiences. It's all about Trump.

Contrary to what Hegseth says what DOD really needs is not more testosterone, but fewer right wing radicals and someone sane and intelligent to lead the department.

As Hegserh's efforts to remake the U.S. armed forces, the armed forces will continue to weaken. Morale at all levels will continue to deteriorate. Recruitment will suffer. And, finally, all of us will be more vulnerable.

Trump's war on the rule of law continues with his efforts to silence criticism from federal judges. Without the rule of law, none of us are safe from malicious prosecution because we spoke out in ways that are clearly protected by the First Amendment.

The Jack Smith hearing tiday in the Senate is Exhibit #1 in the case for replacing conservative Republicans with people who actually have a functioning brain.

One of the take-aways from the Jack Smith hearing today is that conservative Republican senators are, as a group, not very smart. Moreover, these legislators have no respect for the rule of law. They do, however, excel at cheap, gutter level politics.

Trump's obsession with stopping Iran from developing nuclear weapons seems reasonable until we consider Trump's relationship with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, who is working on nuclear tipped missiles with a range that is a direct threat to the continental U.S.

Since the U.S. Constitution became operational in 1789, there have always been malcontents who oppose democracy. The problem today is that six of these malcontents are justices of the Supreme Court.

During a press briefing with Mayor Mamdani, Trump said he liked taking care of people. Yes, but the person he takes the best care of is himself, then his good-for-nothing sons, and then his billionaire friends.

Trump blames his very low (29%) approval rating on bad press. His malignant narcissism won't allow him to reflect on his own performance. Besides being a congenital liar, he has demonstrated an inability to make rational decisions or cogent arguments to support his policies.

The longer Pete Hegseth remains in office the more weakened our armed forces will be. The man sees himself as a military expert, but as Trump's war on Iran shows, Hegseth operates at platoon level thinking, while what is needed is global, strategic, joint thinking, which is far beyond his ability.

Kudos to Anne Applebaum for her column "Empire of Grift" in the Oct. edition of The Atlantic. It's a must-read article for American voters who fear what Trump and his sycophants are doing to dismantle the USA government and the liberal policies that have sustained the country for 250 years.

Trump is threatening to close (permanently?) the Kennedy Center if he can't put his name on the building. Childish and narcissistic in the extreme. Make no mistake: he will deliberately and maliciously ruin this country if he thinks his will is being thwarted.

While the USN is struggling with logistical issues to offshore Iran from Diego Garcia, about 3,000 miles, interesting to note that during the 1982 Falklands War, the Royal Navy forces offshore Falklands were supplied mainly from the U.K., which was more than twice as far.

In the rush to prevent another 9/11, the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) was established. That was a mistake. The intent was to guard against terrorist attacks, during the Trump administration the DHS has changed the mission. Now we have ICE, concentration camps, and forced deportations.
