Been on a bit of a theme with my viewing lately. So far I’ve watched Archie’s Weird Mysteries Eerie, Indiana FreakyLinks Private Crimes (giallo attempt at a Twin Peaks style show) American Gothic (1995) and I’m on Season 2 of Supernatural

Moving on to a show I’ve been wanting to revisit for YEARS and finally picked up a copy after playing my first game of Vampire: the Masquerade; Kindred: the Embraced. Truly a shame it was so short-lived.

Since I’ve been going through the Roger Corman Poe films for October and am about to do a Poe Party rewatch to follow up on my recent Headless rewatch, I decided to continue my Flanagan viewing with a look at The Fall of the House of Usher for the first time.

After that, I watched through the Gothic anthology mini-series Supernatural, also from 1977. A pre-cursor to Are You Afraid of the Dark, each episode begins with a prospective member of the Club of the Damned hoping to gain membership by sharing a spooky story.

Every author you admire has sat looking at their screen page, unsure if the sentence in front of them was good enough. That uncertainty didn't disqualify them from finishing the book, and it doesn't disqualify you either.

Returning to Castle Rock to finish it up and while I’m not a huge fan of all the timeline and story changes they made, Annie Wilkes straight up mercing Ace Merrill with a ice cream scoop in the first episode of Season 2 was pretty great.

Overall that was… disappointing… Maybe I’m just growing tired of AUs and revisionism, but other than Lizzy Caplan’s performance, that was a letdown. There was a lot of promise with not enough followthrough for my liking.

Now I’m doing a rewatch of The Dresden Files. I know book fans don’t care for it, but I found the show first and actually enjoy it for what it is. I’m just getting started with the books, having only read Storm Front so far.

How come none of you told me about Midnight, Texas? A show about a weird little supernatural town from the writer of True Blood? AND Sarah Ramos is in it!? I’m already on the last two episodes of the first season!

From there, I moved on to Lovecraft Country, which takes some big swings, and even though it sets up to continue without a certain problematic individual, I’m kinda glad it was a one-and-done. (And I was NOT expecting the Christina/William reveal!)

I think the biggest problem with the 2005 Night Stalker is the lack of resolutions at the end of most episodes. They come to a conclusion, the case solved, but there’s rarely an explanation of what the episode’s monster actually is. The original Kolchak, Supernatural, the X-Files; they all did.

Moved on to season one of Castle Rock, which was interesting, and definitely took some concepts from Haven for its big twist. Didn’t really care for this interpretation of Alan Pangborn, even though Scott Glenn did a magnificent job, as always.

Also, I was trying to place the FBI agent who has it in for this version of Kolchak from the pilot episode. I finally had to look him up and realize it’s John Pyper-Ferguson. I never recognize him without facial hair and using his normal voice. See, I know him best as Pete Hutter.

Decided to do Kolchak since I hadn’t watched my Kino Lorber blu-ray copy yet. Started with the two TV movies, then did the full series. I’m going to go through the reboot soon, too, even though it’s a fairly weak effort. I will always love this show.

Followed up the Night Stalker with South of Hell, a very short-lived show from Blumhouse starring Mena Suvari. I’d been meaning to watch it since I did a day on set as an extra. It had some good ideas, I enjoyed the premise, but it was rather poorly executed. Still, glad I watched it.

I would rather rip my fingers to the bone, then use those bones to gouge out my own eyes.
