Working on a plant-insect relationships lecture and found something new to me. Midgley et al (2015) (doi.org/10.1038/npla...) reported a smelly, dung-mimicking seed that is primarily dispersed by deceived dung beetles! 'a' and 'b' below are Ceratocaryum seeds. 'g' is the beetles' typical target

Gosh, I wish I can get Ajahn Brahmali's Vinaya Pitaka (well, minus the Abhidhamma-like Parivara) so that I can go through the Vinaya systematically at least once. Asking Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia to see if there is any plan to print out Vinaya Pitaka for distribution. 🤞

I managed to asked for assistance from their office yesterday. For posterity, if your My Mutiara 50 card is without any credit and you don't tap in and tap out your card properly on your trip, the system is going to hold on RM 5 when you tap in for your next trip.

So to avoid the problem that I faced: 1. Bring cash if you can. 2. Always top up the card with spare credit even if you plan to renew your card monthly. 3. Ensure that you tap in and tap out the card properly. Check the card terminal to ensure the system records the event.

3. The only way to renew or top up the Mutiara card is through its kiosks at major stations, I wanted to find out why my card failed. I arrived there at 5:45 pm and it's supposed to open until 7 pm. Guess what, it's closed. It's only open from 11 am till 7 pm, yet the office staff can't keep to that

1. The monthly My Mutiara 50 pass free for all Penangites expired earlier than its stipulated monthly duration. I had only applied for the card early this month. I was dumbfounded that it complained there's no balance in the card. Why? I'm supposed to get free pass for one month.

2. The only alternative payment is cash. If you don't have the exact amount of cash, no change will be returned. Being a monk, I don't have cash. Luckily a young Malay lady sympathized and paid for me. Bless her heart, otherwise I would have to walk for hours back to the monastery🥲

I am sure if Westerners find repetitive chanting of iti pi so appealing, but I certainly detest this sort of chanting. I doubt that's what the Buddha meant by Buddhanussati. Recollection should bring in the emotional aspect of faith through slow and long reflection by oneself.

Dharmaguptaka Vinaya is explicit in allowing monks of the second vassa to join pavarana ceremony with monks of the first vassa. I can't seem to find such information in Pali Vinaya. I'd seen a senior preventing another senior monk from joining pavarana due to this reason.

A bhikkhu went out of boundary for 7 days, but his mum kept him even though he wished to return, he couldn't make it back within 7 days. He thought, "Have I lost seniority or not?"

Now I know why some monks think that breaking rains residence means one's monastic age doesn't increase. Such interpretation is implicitly supported in Dharmaguptaka Vinaya

In Chinese bhikkhuni rules, age is counted in rains. ūnadvādasavassa is twelve rains/years old in Pāli. So, does the seniority of a monk really depends on the completion of rain residence? Or does the seniority automatically increase for each passing rainy season?
