Protecting wildlife from disease is essential to achieving global biodiversity goals. Asia’s vanishing wild pigs are a stark warning. At #CBDCOP17, governments have an opportunity to make wildlife health a conservation priority. 🌏 www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/...

From our New York zoos to the mountains of Mongolia, we are working to protect snow leopards. This #SnowLeopardDay, a glimpse of the “Ghost of the Mountains.” In the Gobi, our experts are tracking snow leopard movements to show the importance of a critical corridor. 🌏

Next week is the start #CBDCOP17. It’s an opportunity to take stock of how governments are doing on the 2030 biodiversity targets. “Failure is not an option,” says WCS’s Susan Lieberman. 🌏 Follow along: wcs.org/cbd

There are just four years remaining to achieve the world’s 2030 biodiversity targets. Success must be measured by a fundamental question: Are the world’s commitments actually delivering results for biodiversity? Follow along during #CBDCOP17: www.wcs.org/cbd

Congrats to #Fiji for launching their National Plan for Coral Reef Conservation. A big milestone for the Coral Reef Rescue Initiative #CRRI and #OurReefsOurFuture campaign.

We applaud Fiji for launching its National Action Plan for Coral Reef Conservation at #PreCOP31. Science and partnership turned into action. 🙏 to @thegef.bsky.social and @bloombergdotorg.bsky.social for supporting this work.

20 American chestnut trees are cause for celebration at our Bronx Zoo, writes @nytimes.com. “This is so much more than planting trees to us,” said Craig Piper. Proud to partner with @nyrp.bsky.social and The American Chestnut Foundation on this effort. 🌎 www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/n...

A diversity of well-governed approaches to conserving land—including many led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities—can complement protected areas and help countries meet global biodiversity and climate goals, a new @wcs.org co-authored study shows.

We will never forget all who were killed or have fallen ill due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. 25 years ago. We honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders and the countless people who stepped forward in the darkest of moments to help, comfort, and care for others.

At the Wildlife Conservation Society, we hold close the memory of our colleague Timothy O’Sullivan, a Bronx native and beloved longtime member of the WCS family who was killed at the World Trade Center.

Today, our hearts are with his family, with every family carrying the loss of a loved one, and with communities across our country as we stand together in remembrance and unity.

Conservation isn’t just happening somewhere else, writes WCS’s William Elliston in a new essay. It’s in the choices we make every day. At WCS’s Prospect Park Zoo, Bill cares for honeybee hives that help convey that message to visitors. 🐝 🌎 Read more: www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/...

The Bronx River is bustling with wildlife. Recently, we shared news from researcher RJ Hawkins, working with WCS Education, that a North American river otter was documented in the Bronx River in the Bronx. But that’s not all. Pictured: American mink from this month. 🌎

Pictures, like this coyote and great blue heron, are a testament to decades of work to clean up the river by many partners, including Bronx River Alliance. Former U.S. Representative Jose Serrano helped get more than $30 million in federal funds to support these efforts.

More than 800 North American box turtles confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade have come to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Bronx Zoo since October 2024. Federal officials describe this recent surge as unprecedented. bit.ly/4gyFrH7

At #UNCCDCOP17, our WCS team brought partners together to advance wildlife-friendly infrastructure. Land and biodiversity are inseparable. Mongolia has committed to protecting ecological connectivity. Now the focus is turning policy into action on the ground. 🌏

It’s #WorldElephantDay. This was taken in the Okwangwo division of Nigeria’s Cross River National Park. There are just 300-400 elephants left in the country there. Nigeria’s National Elephant Action Plan 2024-2034 offers a blueprint for their survival. WCS Nigeria is on the ground supporting. 🌍
