Might post more about this later, but I think MAXIMUM PLEASURE GUARANTEED might be the most interesting show out there right now. If I’m right about what the show is doing/where it’s going it’s different from anything else out there.

Saw #TheInvite and Olivia Wilde directed the shit out of this movie (complimentary). It’s very easy for a movie that takes place in one setting to feel like a play that someone filmed, but this felt like it had to be a movie.

She uses the blocking of the actors, and the camera angles it allows, to create distinctive sections inside of what is essentially one long scene so that the whole things feels cinematic without feeling like she’s forcing weird angles just to do stuff.

Jordan Harper’s A VIOLENT MASTERPIECE sure was a hell of a novel to be reading when Arnie Hammer’s white-vigilante-protects-society movie dropped. Great book overall, but that timing was something else.

Saw Mandalorian and Grogu and understand where both the positive and negative reviews come from on it. The main problem is it’s a Mad Max movie that thinks Mad Max what makes those movies interesting. Max is a drifter who stumbles across the interesting stories of other people.

There wasn’t really an arc that showed what changed in the MANGO relationship between the beginning and the end. So they just kind of went through the story, and I guess Grogu is allowed to push a button on the spaceship and the end?

A lot of the movie is done well enough that it took me a while to figure out what was missing for me. So I can see why some people like it, but I kind of need that other stuff to make a story work. Or have it be something where the missing elements feel intentional, which this didn’t.

MANGO has a clear plot, but it also feels like things are just happening because the main characters are just sort of in it. Like I don’t understand why this is the story they made a movie out of beyond it was larger than a normal episode of TV.

MANGO doesn’t really do this. The emotional core of the movie is Hutt Jr, but he’s only in about a third of the movie. Which means that huge chunks of the movie have things going on, but no stakes to the emotional core of the movie.

It’s kind of the same thing for Westerns as well. Drifter comes into another story and impacts the status quo. These stories work when they realize that the drifter isn’t the emotional core and therefore needs to be constantly interacting with/influencing the character who are.

Not 100% certain what I think about Disclosure Day overall, but it’s kind of amazing that we spend over two hours with a handful of people, and then the climax basically gets handed over to people we’ve never seen before in the movie and it’s absolutely the right choice.

I think this is partially correct. Bear is not an incel, he’s more pre-incel, but I think the movie is structured around incels and incel logic, which is slightly different.

Props to the woman checking ticket at the theater for The Drama who said, “The acting is phenomenal”… and nothing else. About to find out how that review holds up.

If SNL hasn’t done a sketch of the deleted scenes from HAMNET showing all the times when Hamlet calls his mom a feckless whore in the play, they’ve dropped the ball on that one.

Just watched Ghosts of Mars for the first time, and this movie rules. It largely aims for pulp nonsense, and succeeds at being that. There are a few things that could have been a little better, but for the most part, it works for what it’s aiming for.

You ever notice how goofy the instrumental melody line* is in the original version of Sweet Dreams. It’s like someone went “hey, check out this goofy sound”, and someone else went “cool beat, bro. Let’s fuck ‘em up with it”. *May not be the correct technical term; don’t care, fuck off.

Sourdough is a bread entirely beholden to its past. A small piece of ancestral knowledge is passed down in each batch to pay honor to loaves that came before, on and on and on throughout each generation, the past is brought forth anew. It isn’t woke, it’s anti-woke, and that’s why it sucks.

🚨BREAKING: Bread is now woke, according to Alex Phillips

When I watched Beau Is Afraid, my main reaction was that I wished Ari Aster had made a similar movie that wasn’t about someone with Mommy issues. Eddington is basically that movie. It feels more naturalistic, but I think it’s really more of a restrained expressionism than Beau.

And to be fair, there are some people who participate in various causes for their own selfish reasons, but one of the characters has the left wing to right wing grifter arc, and most people on the left can list off several people who fit that story.

The thing is, the movie just doesn’t come out and have a big speech about it, you kind of have to figure out what it’s saying. And the “both sides” aspect of it holds up pretty well in the first half, but falls apart in the second.

I think what some people will bounce off of from the movie is that it is essentially shot from a conservative perspective. I don’t think the movie is as “let’s take down both sides of the argument” as some people think, since the 2nd half of the movie basically shows the left was right in the 1st.

The movie is more “this is how conservatives view left wing arguments” in the 1st half and then in the 2nd half of the movie the sheriff does some things that wouldn’t make sense if he didn’t on a gut level understand that the BLM movement was right about how the world worked on a fundamental level.

Just watched 28 Years Later, and there are shots from the trailer that look super fucked up out of context, but in context are some of the most moving things I’ve seen in a movie recently. Genuinely cried in the theater.

Saying why FRIENDSHIP is a great movie would probably be a spoiler, but there’s a line that Kate Mara has towards the end that is the perfect one sentence deconstruction of movies like this that the entire rest of the movie supports. Also it’s funny. “Thank you for the baked potato.“

Not really related to the post itself, but I love that the glare on the TV makes it look like the person in the background has a straw up her nose.

Uhhhhh Folks I think Ben Foster might actually be turning into Gene Hackman? Which would be the best news in a long time?

So MICKEY 17 rules. It feels like the bozo version of a serious sci-fi movie, but it still hits moments of genuine emotion and melancholy. Like it’s goofy, but without treating it like a joke.

Watched BLACKHAT for the first time tonight. Pretty funny that a major complaint 10 years ago was Chris Hemsworth was in too muscular for the part when today half of Silicon Valley is made up of roided up dipshits challenging each other to MMA fights.

To be accurate, Hemsworth should have been even more muscular both just totally incompetent in a fight. Like he knows the specs of every gun everyone is using and then shoots off his pinky toe.

Overall, I did think the movie was great, and I watched the Directors Cut. If I understand the changes that people are describing, I understand why the theatrical cut wasn’t received well. Swapping the timing of the two main hacks wasn’t a good idea, even if the script had been written that way.

Everyone’s remembering how Y2K was successfully averted, and it was a big relief when nothing happened. But a few days after New Years, I went to balance my checkbook in Quicken, and it said every entry was for 1900 and I screamed in exaggerated agony in my college apartment.
