Trump claims he has successfully blocked cocaine from entering the US with his maritime military campaign. The opposite is true, and it’s showing up in overdose mortality numbers. I analyzed newly available CDC data and found that cocaine involved deaths are up in more states than any other drug.

It’s actually kind of the opposite. High opioid doses depress breathing while hight stimulant doses amp up your heart. A heart pumping fast while deprived of oxygen due to slowed breathing can fail. Both drugs also make you sweat. Arizona’s dessert heat is likely contributing to overdose risk.

There were only three states where overdoses went up by more than ten percent in 2025: Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. These states compose the SW corner of the Mountain census division. There are a few explanations I found about why they’re so hard hit, but I’m curious if anyone has thoughts.

Also, this country has invested SO MUCH into opioid overdose prevention. Which is good! Something else my analysis found is that fentanyl-involved deaths dropped to pre-pandemic rates for the first time in late 2025. But there are still no approved meds for stimulant addictions or overdoses.

Fentanyl is also becoming less available and more volatile. Meanwhile, coke had become cheaper and more pure. Though it’s more frequently adulterated with fentanyl compared to meth (which is and has been cheap.) Some ppl think (wrongly) taking opioids and stimulants together makes them safer.

There are a few reasons this might be happening. For one, Colombian coca crops are booming. Trump blames former president Gustavo Pietro, who shifted drug policy away from criminalization. But the explosion of cocaine in Colombia is a longer standing foreign policy failure.

Orgs like the UN and USAID (RIP) have tried to incentivize Colombian farmers to replace coca crops with other things, like pineapple, and cocoa and coffee beans. But the money they give farmers isn't enough to establish new crops—this can take years. Also, what crop is as profitable as coca?

I saw “You Can See Everything.” It was great. 3 hours and I can’t think of a superfluous scene. The most fascinating thing about the movie is Nathan Fielder doesn’t appear to know what it is he’s documenting. To me the film isn’t at all about the “nature of truth.”

Also, people aren’t talking nearly enough about how scummy A24 looks now.

“The Cornell Seven” moniker rings dissonant to my ear bc it’s reminiscent of “The Central Park Five,” who were exonerated. The two cases are not comparable. The Central Park Five were wrongfully arrested within days of the attack. It’s been 2 years and the Cornell frat bros haven’t been charged.

There was no evidence in the Central Park Five case except confessions NYPD officers coerced out of the teenage boys, depriving them of food, water and sleep.They didn’t have lawyers. The real rapist came fwd years later. Jane Doe did the detective work for own case, gathered her own evidence.

Friendly reminder that you can revive a stale baguette by getting it a little wet (I mist it with a spray bottle) and putting it in a 400 degree oven for 5-10 minutes.

There are many levels of legal insulation at play in the cases at both Penn and Cornell. Often when there’s a drug bust, police will seize the “trap house” property because it was instrumental to the crime. But when a drug ring runs out of a frat, the alumni board owns the house so it’s shielded.

Then there are the private lawyers these guys’ families hire. A past Korean prime minister’s grandson is of one of Cornell’s accused—Winston Lee. Lee’s lawyer, Teny Geragos, helped clear Diddy on sex trafficking charges. Her dad, also a lawyer, kept Chris Brown out if jail for beating Rihanna.

A concrete example: At Penn State’s Delta Upsilon chapter, a senior frat bro and cocaine trafficking ring leader would pull pledges aside and ask them to hold out their hands. If they were steady, he’d order them to the boiler room to help bag cocaine. Those pledges got low level misdemeanors.

The pledges would cut the cocaine with creatine, a supplement popular among bodybuilders. They chose creatine because it’s a white powder frat bros can buy in bulk without anyone suspecting a thing.

Which, maybe they should! Hazing is obviously bad for people. But when a frat boy does crime, you’ll hear a lot of he was pressured, he was insecure, he was hazed. He’s a victim of male loneliness. Every man who joins a frat knows he has plenty of options. Not the case for street gang members.

I understand that there are psychological mechanisms at play during hazing that can make it feel impossible to say no. But there is something maddening about how the law and public narratives treat the consent of a pledge rushing to gain status compared to, say, the consent of a drunk woman.

There are striking parallels btw initiation rituals in frats and street gangs. Violent hazing (which is not universal in either case) is meant to break down individual discretion, & foster shared trauma & secrets. When it happens to frat boys, people wring their hands about coercion & consent.

People living with HIV face unusually high rates of PTSD and depression. The ongoing health issues and stigma they face could make these conditions harder to treat. Psychedelic research often targets treatment resistant PTSD and depression, but only one study looked at people living w HIV.

The inclusion criteria for identity were rigid: only cisgender, gay English speaking 50+ men. The justification for these exclusions was to create a communal group dynamic in a short time. But the study included ppl w psych conditions that would have barred them from most psychedelic trials.

I can only imagine how intense those group sessions must have been. The men in this study were HIV survivors who struggled with feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, in part due to past trauma. So it makes sense there were a lot of comorbidities, like BPD and recent heavy polysubstance use.

Since therapy contact hours are the main thing driving up the cost of psychedelic therapy, one potential cost cutting measure is group therapy to process instead of individual therapy. Intuitively, this makes sense to me. Because I’ve known psychedelics primarily as communal tools.

The one study on psychedelic therapy for ppl living w HIV includes group sessions as a key component. It’s a fascinating read for a number of reasons. The authors mention potential cost cutting as part of their reasoning for group therapy, bc it lowers the number of hours billed per person.

Since most ketamine therapy clinics prescribe off label, insurance companies can call the treatments “experimental” and refuse to cover them. Which is a bit of a Catch 22, because what makes these treatments so expensive is not the drug itself, which is cheap. It’s the therapy part that’s $$$.

In the US, companies have already rolled out psychedelic therapy as a luxury service. When the FDA approved Spravato, a nasal ketamine formulation, for treatment resistant depression, they included lots of safety regulations. So companies found the loopholes. Insurance doesn't cover loopholes.

Since Spravato can only be prescribed with rigid safety restrictions, most ketamine therapy clinics instead opt for formulations approved as anaesthetics, or compounded formulations. These are no less risky than Spravato. But it’s legal to prescribe them for off-label purposes, like therapy.

Dreamwork’s Forgotten Island is so good. It’s theatrical release was cut short so if you can go see it!! I am mixed and have Filipino heritage and I experience all the confusion that comes with that. But watching this movie made feel like I really belong to something.

(That something being a diaspora culture where families ties and memories are broken, distorted, erased and pieced back together with great effort, but still…) Also, you can’t tell me w a straight face (lol) that these two aren’t queer.
