My favourite niche reference ever in a film is the bit in Porridge where they're struggling to assemble a showbiz football XI and Fletch goes "we've got Tony Macaulay."

Marvellous chat, and if you haven't read Penny's book, Untypical Girl, I recommend it wholly.

I recently recorded a 40-minute conversation with Bill Drummond for his sort-of podcast series Spoke in the Wheel. I don't know how long it will be live - a lot of his stuff appears only once a year on the date it was first published. So it may or may not be here: www.penkilnburn.com/spoke-in-the...

I don't think I know any Reform voters on there, but there certainly seem to be people sharing AI-generated material with a fair amount of 'who cares' abandon.

What a line-up! A must, I would have thought, for anyone in or near London.

Ep 31 of my music textcast #FirstLastAnything. This week, read my conversation with the journalist and travel writer William Ham Bevan (@hambevan.bsky.social), where we cover TV schools soundtracks, one of the 70s' biggest bands and old tapes of the top 20. firstlastanything.co.uk/2025/09/14/f...

I don’t have a new anniversary for today, so happy 11th birthday to the comprehensive history of the adjustable spanner

So, happy 10th anniversary of the publication of this book

I regret some of my Twitter era. It was a waste of time and energy.

Block. block. Block. You don’t have to get angry with people on the internet, and you will not improve anything by doing so.

Eric Bauza’s final film performance, as of right now, is Coyote VS ACME. Roadrunner’s testimony is one of his final character performances in the film. He says “Beep” around 46 times, that’s all he says. Yet it says everything about his strengths and passion as a voice actor, with just one word.

Ha ha, let's hope this doesn't find the fash conflicted. Perhaps the RBL will be added to their hate list along with the RNLI. Perhaps in due course everything with a 'Royal' prefix will be deemed traitorous.

Anyone going on BBC this month should order one of these beforehand and let them sweat www.poppyshop.org.uk/products/pri...

We are as a society expected to be definitive every time and sincerity can’t be definitive. I presume a lot of eulogies are now being ‘written’ with the ‘help’ of AI. Don’t do that.

The first of a series of #IntoTheGroove related 'textwalls' to give anyone who hasn't dived in yet, a rough idea as to what you can expect. Will also be sharing these on IG (@whenisbirths) and TikTok (@justin.lewis.when). Do share if you like it. Thanks.

By an astonishing coincidence, 15 years ago he became the media advisor to Evgeny Lebedev.

I don’t know. I don’t think you can be the millionth person to say this if you want clicks

Incidentally, I am not unaware that I've been sarcastic about AR three times lately, and I don't want to give anyone the impression he's the only one doing this. There are a *lot* of commentators doing this.

Blog update: In August 1988, S'Express returned to the top of the NME Indie Charts with "Superfly Guy". It's been overshadowed by its predecessor since, but - hear me out on this - is it perhaps actually the better single? indienumber1s.blogspot.com/2026/10/121-...

Avalanches new album is a perfect tonic for the fearful weather out there. Track 23 (many of them are interludes), I just heard the voice of Carly Simon and the BBC Video electronic jingle from the mid-80s. I have bought very few albums this year - RAYE was one obviously - but will invest in this.
