“We have likely seen just a sliver of the evidence they have that shows they’ve spent decades knowingly deceiving the public about climate science, climate harms, and their commitment to climate action.” More truth to be uncovered. Stay tuned.

“The goal was not to create a viable alternative energy source, but simply, as one internal memo put it, to make consumers ‘[b]elieve ExxonMobil is committed to helping solve climate change.’”

Top Ten Fun Facts about what climate change is doing to Florida’s home insurance market: Fact #1 is that it’s already the most expensive in the country, and predicted to double or triple in years ahead. 🧵

Fact #9. It’s a cascade, like dominoes. Climate risk wipes out insurance markets, which wipes out mortgages, which wipes out property values (unless you’ve got a zillionaire paying cash), which wipes out the economy — a “systemic risk.” Look it up. It’s not pretty.

Last fact, #10. If we don’t address climate change, this only gets worse. Regions becoming uninsurable and unmortgageable is predicted. A “coastal property values crash” is predicted. Elsewhere, wildfire risk creates the same economic danger. Time for us all to wake up.

Fact #7. If you can’t get insurance at all on your home, then buyers won’t be able to get a mortgage on it, and that will hammer the value of most homes. Only cash buyers will remain. Another hit to Florida property values.

Fact #8. Even Trump voters know something’s up. Most Floridians, including nearly half of Florida Trump voters, blame the home insurance crisis on “climate change making storms and hurricanes worse.” And they’re right. That’s the problem causing this.

Fact #5. If you end up in Citizens Property, it can spin you off to local private insurers with questionable ratings, many of which have gone bust when claims came, leaving homeowners stuck in Florida’s state claims guarantee fund, with taxpayers on the hook.

Fact #6. If you stay in Citizens, you should know that two-thirds of its Hurricane Debbie claimants got nothing for their claims — zero dollars. Hard to say it’s real insurance when most claimants got zero payments after a hurricane. Be prepared.

Fact #3. Insurance costs getting that high drives down property values, and Florida leads the country in declining property values. Some Floridians are trapped in homes now worth less than their remaining mortgage principal.

Fact #4. Many Floridians can’t get home insurance at all. If they can’t, and have a mortgage, the bank can “force place” insurance and add that to their mortgage payment, hitting family budgets hard — to pay for insurance for the bank, not the homeowner.

Fact #2. Most major insurers, and the leading ratings agencies for insurers, have pulled out of Florida, leaving many homeowners in a desperate struggle for affordable insurance that will actually pay claims when disasters strike.

In a nutshell: we’ve driven past all the exits to climate safety except pricing carbon pollution; economic shock looms as markets predict the disruptions ahead in our climate reality; and an axis of climate evil is steering us toward disaster. These three facts must guide us.

Listen to markets. The cascade from insurance market collapse to mortgage market failure to property values crash and recession is widely predicted by top insurers, banks, regulators and investors. Abrupt, “systemic” economic collapse looms. We need to warn and prepare.

Spotlight fossil fuel’s dark money corruption and climate denial fraud operations — don’t tell the Little Red Riding Hood story without the wolf. Put the villains in every conversation. Their free-to-pollute subsidy is $700 billion, so they will fight. We must fight too.

Three: The death grip of fossil fuel influence on our politics must be broken. In the United States, fossil fuel dark money post-Citizens United has corrupted and disabled climate governance, and climate denial fraud has polluted climate discourse.

So what to do? Defend and expand the global pollution price in the EU CBAM, recently joined by the UK — it’s likely our last lifeboat. Waivers for Canada, Australia and California would be good. Asap, we need a U.S. “polluter pay” price on emissions.

One: We will fail on climate if pollute-for-free persists as fossil fuel’s business model. Offloading trillions in harm to humankind has always been wrong, morally and economically. It’s now lethal to any prospect of climate safety. It must end.

Two: The leading edge of climate havoc is already upon us in markets. Markets predict. Whole regions are becoming uninsurable, with mortgages becoming unavailable, and hits to global real estate as big as $25 trillion are predicted. Buckle up.

This is the kind of thug behavior creepy billionaires and their government stooges resort to when it looks like the people are going to reclaim their power. Democracy? Or government-by-billionaire? That’s the choice. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...
