Not to be a biased old thinking their generation had the best soundtracks but c’mon ‘90s soundtracks are the undeniable pinnacle of the artform, yeah? Exhibit for the defense no. 1,995: The Muffs, Velocity Girl, Jill Sobule, acoustic Radiohead, Counting Crows, Beasties, Coolio, Bosstones, etc. 🩷

The voices and guitar tones on this album are textbook ‘90s bliss for me. It’s evergreen awesome to my ears but for some reason it manages to double woo me with a little extra sparkle in the fall. Chris Cornell’s voice was such a one-of-one gift.

Monday is no match for the unrelenting awesomeness of “Driver 8,” “Feeling Gravitys Pull,” “Auctioneer,” “Can’t Get There from Here,” “Wendell Gee,” and pretty much every other note and breath on this beauty. Gorgeous wonderland to swim in before the coffee hits.

Nirvana released "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as the lead single from 'Nevermind' 35 years ago on September 10, 1991 | Watch the official video, listen to the album + revisit our tribute here: album.ink/NirvanaNvrmnd

This brand new Cranberries live album from their debut album era is such a stellar performance! Dolores sounds magical, the band is on fire, and there’s even a few hints of what their sophomore album was going to sound like (including an early “Zombie”). The “molten lava” vinyl looks swank as well!

This is going to be SO GOOD in @alisonstine.bsky.social’s hands (and I should probably send an edible arrangement to the @marchxness.bsky.social committee in hopes of making sure my essay doesn’t get paired against this one 😂)

March Xmas 2026@marchxness.bsky.social

Well @erinkeane.bsky.social predicted it and so it has come to be. Welcome to the March Xness 2026 playlist: Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas" (1982), repped now by @alisonstine.bsky.social: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOzi...

It might be hitting 92 in Chicago today but it’s September 1st so FALLMOST IS HERE! Time for vibing to cooler temps, spinning your favorite Fallmost carols, and pumpkin-ing everything! To celebrate just ask yourself WWTSTBD (What Would The Sleepytime Tea Bear Do)? 🍂🎃☕️

As I will be unashamedly diving headfirst into autumn next week (Happy Fallmost to all who celebrate my made-up holiday on 9/1), gonna give a kiss-off spin to one of my favorite seasonal support records that always helps me navigate/survive summer’s humid curse. It’s (almost) fall, y’all!

I do not as a rule submit myself to podcasts, but this was a damn fine listen. The first hour is a primer on Soul Asylum's career leading up to their MTV Unplugged appearance, the last 1/2 hour, a fun and informative interview with Dave Pirner. Will is an astute host, constantly contextualizing. A+

NEW EPISODE! Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum) joins the show to discuss the band’s ultra-rad ‘93 MTV Unplugged and their brand new acoustic live album MPLS Unplugged (out 8/28)! Come for the Soul Asylum deep dive and ‘90s clips, stay for the Amy Grant/Fat Boys tangents! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/u...

Courtney Love teasing a potential Hole MTV Unplugged album on IG today has got me super stoked! Acoustic Hole was such a treat on its own but the additional trio of cello, harp, and clarinet really took it to a special one-night-only creative space. The slow-spun disco ball was a nice touch too!

“Dolly’s songs will live on. They document American history through the eyes of Americans who don’t often get to tell their own story. She also left a legacy for little ambitious girls. All races. All walks of life.” If you only read one Dolly piece, make it Tressie’s (but also, read all of them).

I wrote about Dolly Parton in my latest @nytopinion.nytimes.com column. Thank you. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/27/o...

Okay, first off, what in the world… another absolute legend gone. Second, among his countless other fantastic roles, I will always have a special place in my Christmas Carol-shaped heart for Tim Curry’s excellent Scrooge in the ‘97 animated film and his masterfully charming ‘09 audiobook narration.

VINYL GIVEAWAY! We’re also working with Soul Asylum to give one lucky listener a vinyl copy of the band’s brand new acoustic live album MPLS Unplugged (coming out this Friday, 8/28). Easy entry details in my new Unplugged Revisited episode and in the pic below!

And yes, the other covers are top-tier jams as well! Johnette nailing Patti Smith, Babes in Toyland having a (disco) ball with “More, More, More,” Cassandra Wilson taking “Killing Me Softly” to a whole ‘nother place, Indigo Girls being perfectly mesmerizing as always. This one is such a fun ride!

Yes, so true! Blow’s impact was so expansive and electric that even Dylan had to get in on it! youtu.be/nQMQWVcUDvQ
