friend and I were just thinking about how Bill Evans and Toots Thielemans could’ve recorded a bunch of movie themes during the sessions for AFFINITY and released a whole second album of movie music. - Midnight Cowboy theme - The Pawnbroker theme - The Long Goodbye theme - Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Hypothetical: if we launched a Scholars & Creators Program with influencer-program vibes (think curated book mailings, opportunities to connect with authors, early access to campaigns, etc) would you want in? 👀

- just a matter of time until they release Toni Morrison volumes (I would *think*) - if they’re doing Straub, they really need to Stephen King at some point - Louise Erdrich? and while she’s still alive? - ditto for Percival Everett

ok, I think this piece has a lot of valid insightful things to say. but I will also note that it leaves out a use of phones that I personally have been engaged in: reading ebooks from the library ON my phone. it’s an option that has allowed me to conveniently read dozens of books over the years

I wouldn't go so far as to subscribe to the view that any technological is morally neutral—that just isn't so. but the smartphone doesn’t *have* to be inherently deleterious or bad. it depends on how one uses the machine. I've tried to minimize my interaction with the most addictive types of sites—

off Facebook, never used Instagram or Tiktok in the 1st place. I hang out here a lot, but I don't feel that this site is algorithm-ing me, really. my “time on phone” stats look unhealthy on their face, but at least 40% of those hours are spent reading ebooks

that said, I must admit that I still prefer to read print on the page. but reading ebooks on your phone can be very handy when you’re waiting in a doctor’s office, or in a school pickup line, or on hold with an insurance company, etc., etc.
