Cycle networks create affordable living and reduce social isolation.I have recently been cycling and touring in London, Copenhagen, and Sweden and cycled last year in Paris, Nice, Helsinki and in various parts of Italy. In cycle friendly cities that are integrated with transit people are moving.

“Paris’ traffic is so uncomplicated because of the City’s enormous recent investment in bike mobility (€250 million for its 2021-2026 cycling plan). Bikes are literally everywhere, both in and out of mixed traffic… Here in Toronto, we are hurtling back toward the Stone Age…” @spacing.bsky.social

In Riley Park, located between #Kensington & #SAIT in #Calgary there is a small patch of Plains Prickly pear, which bloom for a few weeks in late June. The rest of the year they're rarely noticed. This second #photo was taken yesterday. You can't say these cacti aren't hardy, no? 😉 #photography

I wonder how many garages are used for parking? How much is used for storage or other purposes? Are there studies on how people use their garages today, the past, regionally over time?

I'm excited to discuss mixed-income housing and its potential to create more inclusive communities with economic opportunity. #MixedIncomeHousing #affordableLiving #CityLife

Creating vibrant urban areas that enable affordable living for everyone is a rewarding pursuit. It's inspiring to connect with others who share this passion for building better cities.

President Carter was a true friend to Habitat for Humanity and worked tirelessly to make the world a better place. He helped families build and repair homes, and brought hope and opportunity to people around the world. Please join in remembering and celebrating his positive impact. #HonoringCarter

US President Jimmy Carter led through hands on building Habitat for Humanity homes. I had the honour to participate in the 2017 Edmonton, Canada Jimmy & Rosalynn led Carter House build. What an inspiring legacy he created leading new homes over 30 years with 108,100 volunteers. #Carter #Habitat

I can’t think of a better way to honor Jimmy Carter than donating to Habitat for Humanity. He and Rosalynn first began volunteering with the nonprofit in 1984 — 3 years after leaving the White House. They volunteered every year until 2020, eventually helping to build and repair 4,390 Habitat homes.

I don’t think we should care about aesthetics that much, but I *do* think people think subsidized affordable housing is “scarier” than it is. This building is home to a very fancy brunch place and awesome coffee shop, and looks pretty “luxury”. Most units are home to people making 30-60% AMI

Great article on openstreets⏬️. I had a blast riding through LA during CicLAvia, and I hear Bogota's weekly Ciclovía is amazing. Anyone else a fan of open streets events? #cyclists #openstreets #urbanism

Why have I never heard of this? We could do it in #ldnont --car free downtown one morning a week: "“We build a new city every Sunday” slate.com/business/202...

Opportunities for affordable housing providers to acquire lands and one day redevelop as perpetual rental is a key strategy to address that challenge of displacement of existing renters when properties are redeveloped.

🏘️. Increasing the availability of rental units is crucial for meeting housing needs. One key aspect often overlooked is that new homes are frequently built on previously inhabited properties. #rentalsupply #housingaffordability #housingcrisis

Proposal by UK Housing Forum for 1.5 million homes! Of note, addressing the need for larger family homes - current AH programs focus on units, not people. Key ideas include adjusting some grant rates based on habitable rooms vs units & more data on home size #Housing #Family #UK #Government #Policy

'The history of American postwar urban neighborhoods offers lessons for today about understanding modern communities. One lesson is that middle-class observers of working-class communities... should be wary of their own biases and observe with an open mind.'

In the early 20th century, reformers waged war against slums, but the so-called slums of New York and other cities were complex places, and contained not only impoverished people and awful housing, but businesses, entrepreneurs, and upwardly mobile families. www.jchs.harvard.edu/blog/enigma-...

Interesting study in the UK about rising housing costs, a global challenge. More investment in research and development and new approaches for procurement are a couple of areas identified for improvement.

Old housing tends to be cheaper than new housing. To make housing more affordable we should stop building new housing and build old housing instead.

'Without the renewed federal spending to address housing affordability under Canada’s NHS, there would be ~ 78,000 more households in core housing need by 2027'

The reduction in core housing need in 2020 and 2021 was due to temporary income supports implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which increased incomes for low-income households

Shortcuts. Paris seems to be filled with these little paths through courtyards between streets. It's an extra little something to discover when walking around. Open a door and you'll never know where it ends up. 📷: Leica Q3 #leica #leicaq3 #paris #streetphotography #europe #travel #france
