Yes. And at the same time it's incredibly depressing to watch videos of students leaving a Michigan football game unable to verbalise why they won't be voting for Abdul El-Sayed.

In the wake of events in Belgrade tonight, Americans on here should keep in mind that there are enough signs from Minneapolis to Chicago to South Texas that such civil society mobilisation is possible in the United States too

Big loss. Rest of World regularly produced the most interesting and original tech reporting.

Ben Mullin@benmullin.bsky.social

News: Rest of World, the nonprofit newsroom focused on the impact of technology outside the West founded by Sophie Schmidt, tells donors in an email it will “cease publishing as a standalone entity” at the end of January.

Reading the quote tweets of this post is a clear signal of how bad a lot of the American part of this website is. Conspiracist rubbish. Sorry guys, but it's true. Text based social media is dead in America.

Looks like Pedro Sanchez's luck is running out here too. PP and Vox both up since he called the early election.

James Ball@jamesrball.com

1. Call an early election because the opposition is in chaos 2. Early election causes opposition to stop being in chaos 3. Polls move against you 4. Oh. *Really* against you (Conservatives will be majority government). 5. Resign

Listening to the Communards in a high plains Spanish cafeteria that doubles as a crusades merch shop. 300km under the belt already this morning. A bit discombobulated tbh.

Kid texts: "Dad, I REALLY need a ticket for the school ball deadline is 5pm TODAY, here's the link". I click the link. It's in a hotel function room in a big dairy town 40 miles away from the city the school is in. In January. Finishes at midnight. It's €75 a ticket. FML.

Younger folks don't know the rules of the Big Purchase.

Okay, look, I know obviously this is the most corrupt administration ever, and we should throw Jared down a well, but I just want to say... when you're committing $700M in crimes, USE A LAPTOP?! Don't do billion-dollar-crimes on a *phone*! Can't even buy _plane tickets_ on a phone!

The PHP bug shows the immense, incredible power of security by obfuscation and we should stop all human development to protect this critical feature of everything.

You know what's difficult? Remembering all the websites you have.

James Ball@jamesrball.com

This PHP vulnerability *is* why lots of sites – especially government ones – are suddenly offline, but it's *not* because they've been hacked. Instead, they've been pulled offline until they can be made secure again. It's a bit of a mess. Short thread.

I hope he gets better, and that someone one day finds a better way of writing about a virus affecting the legs.

One of the most satisfying parts of our work @whotargets.me is being able to support election accountability work in so many countries, languages and contexts. In a given week, we might be doing that in 5-6 countries. Really interesting and fun.

Who Targets Me@whotargets.me

We chatted to BBC Serbian about digital ads ahead of this week's election. They found unverified advertisers running ads against a growing student movement in the country, paid for in Romanian leu. Meta took some of the ads and pages down. www.bbc.com/serbian/arti...

Republicans spent just $160,000 on ads mentioning Donald Trump last week, while Democrats spent $7,000,000. It's a clear sign the president's own party considers him a liability in the midterms.

“ recent research by the Nobel laureate economist Daron Acemoglu and colleagues shows what tends to happen when you put an M.B.A. in charge. In both the United States and Denmark, firms that appointed managers with business degrees cut wages and reduced labor’s share of income.”

Not sure how many people watched the ITV doc on racism in Reform last night (500k?), but they've bought 20m impressions of ads on Facebook this week, with a combined reach of 13.5m accounts.

The US does also need people prepared to read the advertising policies of the companies they want to pay to run ads with. ads.tiktok.com/resources/he...

Step by step, day by day, Americans experience the big platforms becoming Orwellian political censors. The US needs a federal government that will tax them and break them up; the democratic world needs to learn the lesson and protect itself.

Musk just announced he will give a SpaceX share to "every child in America". Notionally $10bn worth at the current price of $150, or 0.5% of the company's "market cap". Seems like a nationalisation of a sort, as well as a "too big to fail" insurance policy. We'll see if it happens...

Boringly, TikTok has had a ban for ads with political content forever, and this just seems like an application of that long-standing policy.
