Early Gen X guy living in beautiful Port Townsend, WA. I have four cats with seven eyes and three tails between them. I’m a Drupal developer for state government. I co-authored a 1994 book about the Internet. I like music by people my age. Atheist, vegetarian, pro-UBI, anti-borders.

Pardon mon Français but holy fucking shit.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Wow, BioWare is gone. Dragon Age Origins redefined what I expected out of storytelling in games. Such a pity to see EA run a legendary studio into the ground.

Watching Carrie, and the writing so far (in episode 1) is excellent, nicely updated for modern times, the performances are excellent, and the music soundtrack is massively overbearing.

I would like to see the end of the term "vaccine skeptic," to be replaced by "reality denier." These so-called skeptics are actually the most gullible rubes on the planet when it comes to conspiracy nonsense and tech-bro slop; the only thing that makes them skeptical is peer-reviewed evidence.

A reminder that Seymour is a GODDAMN PLANT.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

A girl won the role of Seymour in South Grand Prairie High School in Texas. Then, the district freaked out because of Texas' anti-trans and anti-gay law. So they tried to strip her role and give it to a boy. She refused, so now they are cancelling the play. Subscribe to support our journalism.

My physical therapist insisted that treating myself after going to the gym is an essential part of forming the habit. Happily, Banana Leaf Thai Bistro is one block away from the gym.

I’ve been waiting for a couple of years to replace my Apple TV (and move my old one into the guest room). But Apple missed the price point on the new one by a hundred bucks. That’s going to make it a much harder call vs simply using native apps on the TV itself.

Note that I *hate* Samsung’s UI, and the lack of momentum that you get while navigating with the Apple TV’s touchpad, so I’m not at a hard no…but I’d expected this to be a no-brainer purchase, and it’s not.

The fact that the wall-mount HomeView is *more* expensive — once the mount is factored in — than the model that sits on a big speaker base, is kind of disappointing.

What the fuck is confusing about it? He made it up and then will claim Ukraine violated the imaginary deal. Anyone with a working brain cell knew this as soon as he said it.

OK, if the 2CV makes it to the US, and the range is good, that’s what I’d trade in the Bolt for. (Assuming, of course, that it has CarPlay.)

Amazon’s data about me is somewhat confused by the fact that I often order things for my mother. E.g., it’s right that I have a cat and a garage, but it’s wrong that I eat gluten-free and like quinoa.

I’m thinking about the contrast between how the government attempted to regulate open-source encryption in the 90s — classifying it as munitions — vs what it’s doing now (nothing) with AI. Kinda wild.

I don’t know if an ad campaign has ever made me less interested in a movie than Digger’s. You spend 95% of a trailer showing clips from other movies, and that tells me you don’t have anything interesting to say about the movie you’re actually advertising.

Banana Leaf accidentally made me sweet & sour stir fry instead of what I asked for, and you know what? Leave that shit here with me, that’s a good mistake.

“A familiar future, yet stupid” seems like a phrase I may be using for the rest of my life.

William Gibson@greatdismal.bsky.social

And I assume that it does, though it’s still scarcely AI at all. So this is a familiar future, yet stupid. And in so many other ways as well.

Was anybody else here kicked out of their elementary school gifted program for, say, playing with matches? In my defense, I was making rockets out of the matches, and they worked, and also they left a large supply of matches where I could find them.

There’s a scene in #CoyoteVsAcme in which the animators manage to display a depth & immensity of emotion on Wile E’s face — a non-speaking character — that seems impossible and yet is absolutely perfect in context. I really urge you to see the movie in a theatre. Not just to give Vaslov the finger.

The “prehistoric starfish-centipede monster” thing in “Nautilus” raises serious questions. These creatures have never encountered anything with a throat or even a set of lungs before. How do they have a strangling instinct?

Was the killing of Brian Thompson a crime? That’s the question that is being asked—demanded, even—in the halls of power and corridors of justice and on the platforms of influence. Answer: It was. The question never asked is, what type of crime was his life? www.the-reframe.com/peaceful-sol...

Mary Steenburgen is still hot as the sun, like an unbroken line of hotness from 1979’s Time After Time to this year’s The Dink, it’s uncanny.
