one of the things that makes T smarter or at least more capable than Vance is he knows the only correct answer is “fuck you”

Q: Why shouldn't Alaskans find it insulting that the administration is suggesting they can't read the word 'incumbent' on their ballot and know to vote for Sen. Sullivan? JD VANCE: People are busy. People have lives. People have jobs.

“hang on, i left my wallet, i’m stupid” /grabs me by the elbow, looks DEEPLY into my eyes: “Never say that. You are *not* stupid. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re stupid.” i’ve had discussions with war veterans that were less intense than these guys

I really stand firm by the take that the mental health awareness movement in the 2010's went too far. I should be allowed to state "I'm going to kill myself" if I hit my elbow. You can be a little flippant about suicide, as a treat

My folks are “never-Trump Republicans,” and while I appreciate the line they won’t cross, “they’ll be voting for a ‘moderate’ GOP in six years” has been in the back of my head. my father today: “Do billionaires not realize that if they gobble everything, their heads will be on chopping blocks?”

mom today: “I’m still not sure what I think of Sanders, but that woman you like?” Elizabeth Warren. “I’m coming around to her.” “I know everyone pays much higher taxes in Sweden, but you can just go to the doctor if you need to. Nobody should get rich when someone gets cancer.”

“It seems like the standard of living in China is just way better.” “I’m starting to think I’ve been lied to about communism my whole life.” (he’s 83) “I never believed that ‘blood for oil’ stuff but… nothing else makes sense.” Meanwhile mom is out advising local Dem candidates on housing issues.

One of my five favorite albums of all time, like easily. Twenty-five years and I’ve never gotten tired of listening to it.

Did Dat Dude Describe Destroyer?@dddddpodcast.bsky.social

Our Mass Romantic episode is live! This is our first episode with a guest, and folks: it’s John Collins, bassist/producer of both Destroyer and The New Pornographers. The sheer number of fun facts and kooky anecdotes John shares on this episode is unreal. One of the best podcasting experiences ever

stfu i’m busy reading about vampire squirrels from borneo

c0nc0rdance@c0nc0rdance.bsky.social

The Tufted ground squirrel (Rheithrosciurus macrotis) is a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in floof. Let's start with the *FLOOF* & talk about why they're called "VAMPIRE SQUIRRELS" last. They have the largest tail: body size ratio of any mammal on Earth: the tail is *130%* the size the body.

Jim Thompson was one of the greatest stylists of all time, should be taught in more creative writing classes

2/7 “There are things that have to be forgotten if you want to go on living.” “You've got forever; and somehow you can't do much with it. You've got forever and it's a mile wide and an inch deep and full of alligators.”

as long as one doesn't mind being an engineer who doesn't vote or hold any particularly important opinions on culture and humanity, yeah it’s basically optional

Mike Ross@eruptionchaser.bsky.social

Am I missing something here? In what universe would an engineering student ever study history?! Do many history students study engineering?! I *enjoyed* history at school, and I was *good* at it. But no way would I ever have studied it at university.

… trolling aside: I was a stupid person before I started seriously studying history. And I’m still pretty dumb, but at least it’s an informed dumbness, which isn’t as bad as stupid. Education is as much about preparing for a career as it is becoming better at being a person.

This shit has been on my mind a lot lately, particularly w/r/t AI execs saying “there’s a 10% chance AI will kill us all” and actively embrace gov’t regulation. They don’t believe that, obviously. But they know that people will try to use AI for things like air traffic control…

been thinkin about how robots are gonna kill us

I spent the first thirty minutes of the morning doomscrolling just that account… gawd you really had to live through that day… It’s disappointing that projects like this are still taking off on X the Everything App™. We still haven’t got the juice.

- The demand for corporate AI is mostly imaginary. - The datacenter buildout has no real customers. - Private-equity-owned pensions are holding the bag for this mess, and a bailout isn’t feasible. (THIS IS BAD) - Oracle is over lol - Apple’s lack of investment is starting to look shrewd.
