In my new 'job' as a Data Doctor on #Wikitree while sourcing orphaned profiles.in Kent, I found this 👇. In 1901, the Kennett family had taken Florence in as a 'nurse child'. By 1911 she had been adopted by them. I couldn't find her birth registration. #genealogy

I did find Rose Lancaster, 19 years old in 1901, living just a few streets away and working as a laundress. In 1911, the Kennett family ran a laundry in Cheriton. All sorts of questions are bouncing around my head. It's not my family, but Florence won't let me go. #adoption

Wonderful @nwkfhs.bsky.social zoom talk yesterday evening by Judy Hill on the life of servants in the Victorian period in Britain. Sounded pretty grim, but better than the mines, factory or being an ag lab. #genealogy

But there were perks too, and the pay wasn't bad once you'd risen up the hierarchy into the upper servant level, like ladies maid, butler, or housekeeper. Sometimes you were even allowed to marry.

My 2x great grandfather was a coachman at Kirtlington Park in Oxfordshire. He made enough money to start up his own stables in Leamington after he got married.
