‘THE SIMPSONS’ will feature an episode titled ‘THE KOSMIC KRUISER’, in which Bart and Lisa break into Krustyland’s most notorious failed attraction. Jenny Nicholson will guest-star. #TheSimpsons #JennyNicholson

Making Yet Another Mental Note here to engage with more pets, pixel art, shout-outs, food, and irreverent shitposts about nothing in particular... And LESS anguished reactions to these Interesting Times. (not to imply that any of them aren't warranted) C'mon shaper; shape that algorithm!

Lärabars have "Just 5 Real Ingredients,"but personally, I think that makes it sound like there might be several "fake" ones.

Nooo! Ran into my first sighting in the wild of a game referring to itself as a "metroidbrainia" in the store page marketing copy... It's cooked. Genres were a mistake.

I feel like such a fool for trusting Google enough to get a "4K Streamer" set top box. Consecutive silent firmware updates have apparently disabled its ability to correctly HDMI handshake awaken an LG TV, and it now has a habit of sending a black screen with only audio until power-cycled...

All of our IoT devices are going to start getting firmware updates written by Claude instead of actual engineers, aren't they? Enshittify all the things!

So, let me get this straight; the pro-AI indies are awkwardly trying to get influencers hooked on their products... while naming them things like "CRACK" "Hey bud, are you interested in CRACK?! The first taste of AI thumbnail content creation magic is FREE you know ;-)"

Just received this email WTF IS THIS??? This is a sure fire way to get me to NEVER play your game

Welp, there's one of the (likely many) shoes dropping in the wake of the EA sale and privatization... Will anything other than EAFC and Madden survive 2027?

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Zelda fans eternal kibbitzing about the series' design and art direction is EXACTLY the same thing as sports fans endlessly chopping it up about their team's leadership and prospects. The difference is we're not four generations into the tradition yet, so it's annoying(weird) not annoying(normal).

xeneth.design@xeneth.design

It's stupid, but humans need to complain in detail about SOMETHING without repercussions; life is made of jobs and relationships and spaces that make you look & feel bad when you whine about them not being optimal. Video games are a bottomless source of catharsis, (unless you try to make them!)

This reminds me slightly of people belatedly getting upset about the state of physical games media a decade after accepting that games ship with progression blocking defects requiring giant day 1 patches, and needn't all fit on the delivery medium in the first place...

WHY are you, a restaurant, using AI for your posters????? that's literally not what your food looks like????? just use a picture of your damn food??????

I'm in total agreement with the core sentiment, but also wish we'd have collectively been more offput by all the fake depictions of our food leading up to this GenAI moment. Wincing a bit at the implication that we care about the QUALITY of the deception more than whether we're being deceived.

Reusing concept art as actual in-game paintings is kind of brilliant, but I can't help but be struck by the vision of a pre-disaster farmsteader hanging up doomsday prognostication fine art... "And this right here's what the village might look like in a nightmare... I think I'll hang it in the den"

Anyone know if the way motion blur is implemented in current engines might be, I dunno, combining poorly with DLSS and other upscalers? Finding that I have to turn blur off in situations I didn't before to make action more readable, even if things look more "gamey" and less "filmic" or whatever...

Maybe it's just my aging eyes/brain or something, but this relatively new habit bothers me slightly because I do place SOME value on the "intended" look of the art, and games tend to default to motion blur being enabled.

Enjoying #ValorMortis so far, (surprising how fresh/different 1st person makes standard soulslike design feel) but it's awkwardly cruel progression to teach/unlock weapon upgrades, then immediately hand you a sweet Rapier after baiting you into blowing all your materials on the starting blade, oof!

Without knowing how easy it's gonna be to farm/find upgrade materials in the next chapter and catch that sword up, the temptation to simply restart with more parry skills & optimal systems knowledge is overwhelming, and not helped at all by there being only one save slot...

In the interest of being constructive, the lowest hanging solution to this is probably just to move the creepy corpse chest you pull the rapier out of from just after the chapel to just before it, that way when you learn how to upgrade weapons, it's presented as binary "which sword sounds sweeter?"

Going crazy seeing so many intelligent people willingly engaging with Musk's "flying car" narrative and legitimizing it by outlining how dangerous and difficult to control a street legal commercial jump jet vehicle would be- It's a fucking hollow aluminum drone in the SHAPE of a car!

A Prius travelling at 15 MPH would collapse that "prototype" like a soda can! By engaging with the premise that the "Flying Roadster" could seat multiple people, run/recompress air for longer than 5 stunts and be legally insured, you're acting almost as gullible as the rubes placing $250k deposits.

*doubletakes* Wait... is that just the grip meter from Shadow of the Colossus? Thinking about it, SotC is a little like Chrono Trigger and other "beloved evolutionary dead ends" that I'm used to seeing indirect influences from but rarely DIRECT design references.

And I suppose that meter packs a LOT of state information into a pretty nice little package, but somehow I'd never expect to see it borrowed or iterated on... lots to think about.

Even if the "screenshot" tech hasn't quite reached most devs, it's good that almost every metroidvania lets you annotate the map in SOME way... But for whatever reason we're still foolishly basing pin icons on the rewards and collectables instead of the obstacles and abilities needed to get them!?

Actually Desirable Unlocking World Map Icons: * Up Arrow (more height) * Side Arrows (more distance) * Down Arrow (dive/slam) * Cracked Block (destruction) * Ghost (intangibility/immunity) * Keys / Locks (item gating) * Hook (grapple/climbing) * Question Mark (suspicious/unsure)

* Exclamation Mark (exciting/wild) * Interrobang [?!] (sus & crazy) * Winged Boot (additional jumps) * Bubbles / O2 (swimming/breathing) * Wind Gust (speed/dash) * Clock (temporal manipulation/time dilation) ...you get the idea: What's Locked < What's Required!

They're to remember what/when to revisit, so we're inventing encoding systems like, "The chest actually means 'suspicious wall' not treasure, and the chalice really means 'need bigger ups'" Details you're likely to forget if you put a game down for a while unless you record a separate key/legend...

"Toward the end of the 21st century, people were prone to seeing human faces in almost any pattern, but by the █████████ gestalt of the early 4300's, the ubiquity of excited facial imagery led to massive reductions in what was once referred to as 'pareidolia.'" -Excerpt ████████, recovered by █████

Saw this on the shelf at Target and it’s like a portal to an utterly unknowable parallel world. As if i was peering into the dimension from Stalker

Sometimes it feels like we're "running out of names" somehow, but then you remember that there are millions of words we don't use because they haven't RECENTLY appeared in the name of another wildly successful game, like: Windermere Impetus Pillory Abrasion Ophidian Formidable etc...

pick a Lagoon

(and yes, if you plug any of those into Steam you will PROBABLY find a game with that word in the title, and without looking I'm willing to bet it's got less than 100 reviews!) It's interesting that historically, names for bodies of water actually get surprising play in video game titles!

"Remit" seems to be rotating back into lexicon, (at least in scripts trying to make characters seem smart and posh) but the definitions are varied enough that it's giving the opposite vibe, to my ear; intelligencia cool to me means using MORE specific language, not less+older.

I can't help but feel like one of the core issues with this whole GenAI race to the bottom is that from the perspective of the people with all the power and control over it, there isn't actually THAT big of a difference between "Space Corridor," "System Shock," "Halo," "Mass Effect," and "Pragmata."

Dan Marshall@danthat.bsky.social

The video advertising Unity's ew AI-driven autocomplete game maker has 'Mari' who has a game idea they "always wanted to make" and that idea is "Space Corridor" and it looks like this, and that's the strongest argument I can think of for keeping game dev out of the pro-AI crowd's hands.

They haven't actually played that much/many games, and they're not artist enough to clock differences in aesthetic nuance... ...not musician enough to pick up on dynamic/modular sound design... ...not writer enough to appreciate the difference between character dialogue and a ChatGPT conversation.

Starting to wonder how much of the initial negative reaction to #ControlResonant boils down to Character Action simply not being the current culturally agreed-upon "base" genre underpinning the majority of video games. #Control was "only" a service(weapon!)-able Shooter, (sorry) after all...

Remedy places a lot of trust in the player; a very anti-yellow-paint ethos they're working with, but this time around that seemingly extends to allowing you to make very un-synergistic low damage builds and muddle through the early game with a very negative opinion of the combat...

Which is fair crit, to be clear! Resonant is NOT a masterclass in most of these areas. compare Bloodborne's initial weapon selection; the relative simplicity/viability across the trio! That 30% crit "bait" on Strike would be like if the Threaded Cane was a Bloodtinge weapon; way too early for that!

Having "wasted" so much time in MOBA spaces, I don't think I'm particularly good at execution in either genre TBH, but I DO think in build/theory craft, and the early loadouts I see in streams and hear described on various gaming podcasts don't make a lick of sense to me...

Almost everyone getting baited into Strike or Glaive because Cleave sounds like the boring normie sword I assume? Except Cleave gives you the earliest access to knockup off a dodge attack, and flat back damage beats crit prior to stacking other sources of crit chance/damage from elsewhere?

Point being, what % of gamers come equipped to navigate and "make the best of" decent, above average shooter mechanics vs melee character action mechanics? Head shots, LoS, cover, and kiting are baked into a much larger number of players than juggle combos, back damage, and crowd control.

"I have dedicated my LIFE to this corporation because they thoughtfully extended design affordances toward me as a child, but I feel VERY strongly that they should NOT do that for some stupid kids I haven't met and don't plan on having, instead catering specifically to my cohort as we age out!"

@kylethompsondev.bsky.social's games always manage to scratch my metroidvania itch, but I think #WellDweller might be the first one to visually stop me in my tracks with visual spectacle and composition, wow. These creepy cute vibes and Grimm storybook themes are WORKING!

Still got #BigWalk on the brain in a Big Way, and we're probably only halfway through?! So much of game design as a craft is additive, for lots of reasons that get reinforced by the iterative nature of something so densely interwoven with the complex technologies that make the medium possible...

House House's subtractive design philosophy on this title is SO impressive, especially in this moment when we're wrestling with/against generative tools to learn FARTHER into void-filling, "more is more," kitchen-sink-and-a-bag-of-chips style creativity...

Yeah, "you have to play the silences between the notes too" and all that jazz, I know you've heard this before, but it bears repeating; the player's experience is just as defined by what they CAN'T do, (or what they need other players to accomplish, even asynchronously in single player games!)

Nope, can't trick me into thinking about what the various Sonic homonculi's fingernails look like under the gloves, can't do it, won't keep attempting to visualize the cuticles, ain't happening!
