Typical straight white American dude who refuses to pretend I don't have it good. Wife guy. Philly fan. Militantly pro-constitution and pro-democracy shitlib. ICE abolitionist. Free trader. YIMBY AF. Takes may be hot but are authentic.

Bolsonaro the younger loses, as does Serbia's pro-Putin authoritarian nationalist president. There have been lots of setbacks for liberal democracy recently, so we should savor the wins. Maybe the tide is turning.

Brazil was of two huge election results today—alongside the defeat of the nationalist, authoritarian leader of Serbia: "the slate of candidates selected by protesting students had won at least 135 seats in Serbia’s 250-member legislature" www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/w...

will try to answer these in a piece next week but for now i will say that part of the *point* of court expansion, in my mind, is to create a disequilibrium — a potential race to the bottom — that will force a truce.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

ICE is a terrorist organization and needs to be torn apart piece by piece.

Eric Umansky@ericumansky.bsky.social

This is exactly what ICE said: "Parra-Hernandez ran in front of an ICE vehicle and was struck." Now watch the video. They're no other word for it: They're lying.

This is just a relentlessly horrific story. It’s hard to adequately contextualize the moral desolation of this unfolding in the midst of a midterms against a ruling party helmed by inveterate rapists and rape apologists. www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/congres...

*Jerky Boys voice*: "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your fuckin' ears!"

Mark Wallace@wallaceme.bsky.social

Ok don’t let’s get carried away but I found something genuinely good on Threads.

Yeah fuck this noise. I've defended some things Jeffries has done as Minority Leader but this is weak shit and we can't afford it with literal fascists trying to cement their takeover of the country. He has to go. He cannot be the Speaker, or have any prominent role as a face of the party.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Jeffries defends his meeting with Kushner: "I'm of the view that if we're going to be committed to actually solving problems on behalf of the American people ... they're are gonna be times that you have to speak with people on the other side of the aisle. Even people you strongly disagree with."

Is this bad? It seems bad.

Zeteo@zeteo.com

Several Trump administration officials privately told Zeteo the Iran war was spiraling out of control, after the Republican Party’s midterm convention. One official said they viewed the developments as Iran & the Houthis in Yemen launching a “Tet Offensive” on the economy: zeteo.com/p/trump-iran...

This is one of the pumping stations on the Saudi East-West Pipeline that just got hit by Iranian allies and as you can see, it's totally FUBAR. This pipeline is not going to be back up and running anytime soon, which means ~7M barrels of oil a day are now off the market.

I know not everyone on the left is a fan of the Bulwark crew, but as former Republicans I think they have some very important insights into how to short circuit GOP propaganda.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

@sarahlongwell25.bsky.social: "I feel like Jon Ossoff has already liquefied and imbibed this book…He understands what offense looks like and how to get under their skin, but more importantly, how to raise the public's awareness about all the corrupt and strange things Trump is doing."

Very smart thread.

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

Dolly Parton was a great artist and an equally good citizen and person. There aren't many you can say that about. Rest in peace.

I've been an El-Sayed skeptic but he's killing it right now. Just slicing through the the Fox News culture war bullshit like a plasma torch, in a way I've only seen Buttigieg equal. More of this please.

here is the thing. if you tell me that you believe that race is a biological category and that it is a guide to the objective superiority and inferiority of groups of people, i am not calling you a racist to *insult* you, i am calling you a racist because it best describes your beliefs.

Of all the words that I never heard growing up which have suddenly become popular in recent years, "warfighter" is among my least favorite. Not only is it vaguely fashy, it's redundant and unnecessarily verbose. Just not a good word and a bad job by whoever came up with it.

The whole silicon valley thing of 'You buy most of the company but I still control it.' is pretty batshit insane and contrary to principles of capitalism.

Whiskey Pete is obviously a chest-thumping moron so this is certainly plausible, but the fact it's being reported now smells like somebody readying to throw him under the bus.

Fernandez is the most unlikable player on a team that Messi aside is full of unlikable guys so if Argentina loses because he gets sent off I'm good with that.

Unpopular opinion: While I personally don't need a World Cup Final halftime show, if they're going to do one that was absolutely fine. It was inclusive, it was multicultural, it was fun - exactly what the World Cup is supposed to be about. All the whining about it is a bit over the top.

As a former classics major I definitely chuckled.

I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS

The GOP is just on a simply astonishing run of demolishing Chesterton's Fences left and right, and we are all paying the price for it.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver@cleaver.house.gov

We should have learned that you can’t manage a public health crisis by ignoring it. Politicizing science and weakening disease surveillance doesn’t make threats disappear, it only makes us less prepared to respond.

The weirdest thing about this whole mishigas to me is that Trump's position is that both Balogun's red card and his citizenship should be rescinded.

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

the Balogun red was obvious horseshit in real time, there is no consistency whatsoever in foul calls across games within the World Cup, player suspension is stupid anyway, stop whining

Belgium deserves a lot of credit for coming back but I really don't love deciding an elimination game on a marginal penalty call like that.
