(1/6): How can we better test therapeutics without using animals or risking lives? Lab-grown human mini-organs, called “organoids”, provide an answer! Despite their progress, organoids and related methods lack realistic flow through blood vessels, the “plumbing” of our bodies.

Congratulations to all the awardees of IRCM foundation scholarship, including our own Théa Milland & Noah Verreault. I appreciate the donors who made this possible. These awards are competitive & externally reviewed - I highly appreciate the reviewers for their time, effort and support of students!

Today in the 🇨🇦 National Grad course in #Islet Biology and #Diabetes we welcome superstars Cristina Nostro and @yassiag.bsky.social to discuss the latest on using #stemcell derived islet cells as a strategy to treat (cure?) #T1D!

Wrapping up a great year for the lab. We in 2025 we expanded and reached some important milestones as a growing team. Grateful for the collective effort and momentum. Wishing friends and colleagues a restful holiday season and a happy start to the new year.

Interesting and impactful new work by Estall lab: “Here, we identify a novel biological pathway downstream of glucagon that promotes the hepatic lipid accumulation associated with fasting” 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 #Glucagon #MASLD #Fasting

I am happy to share the latest preprint from our lab (@ircm.bsky.social, @umontreal.ca, @mcgill.ca) exploring why and how the liver gets fatty when you are fasting, and how this could impact MASLD. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 🧵1/6

Nice discussion on the usefulness of genetic and autoantibody screening in children for T1D

Islet Biology Lab - UMH@isletbiologylab.bsky.social

Bonifacio et al. estimate that a screening approach that uses repeated islet autoantibody testing results in the greatest sensitivity for identifying youth who are in a presymptomatic stage of #type1diabetes. #PancSky link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Honored to have recieved this together with Dr Hoesli and @martinsauvageau.bsky.social

Important discussion in @devbiol.bsky.social by Scott Gilbert. As scientists, and as developmental biologists, we really need to share the facts we know with the public. #DevBio

Thrilled to share one of our biggest discoveries: “Inceptor binds to and directs insulin towards lysosomal degradation in beta cells”. doi.org/10.1038/s422... A tremendous collaborative effort led by JohannaSiehler, Sara Bilekova and other members of the Lickert lab @heikolickert.bsky.social

doi.orgInceptor binds to and directs insulin towards lysosomal degradation in β cells - Nature MetabolismThe insulin inhibitory receptor (inceptor) is found to bind to insulin and to regulate insulin stores by directing proinsulin and insulin towards lysosomal degradation.

On this #WorldDiabetesDay we took the opportunity to bring special attention to type ONE diabetes by #BlueBalloonChallenge, & to highlight the need for new therapies + exercise. Sneak peak below with @JaneYardley2 @Herve_VR @Olilideng @ircm_mtl @DiabetesCanada (full video tmrw)
