"Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living."

The deepest and truest answer to Yglesias's point, by the way, is that no man is an island, that all of humankind are bound together in an inescapable web of mutual dependence and therefore obligation, and that this entails the moral necessity of some kind of world government

Wonder if there's something to look into here with the NYU of it all. His gigantic son goes to that school, which doesn't make much sense, considering what NYU is and what he is. Why?

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

ruthless "pragmatists" who turn their nose up out of electoral victory concerns at red state trans refusers to force down voting for anti-trans Dems should have no worries, their cowardice and Republican oppression has already driven out enough trans voters to make the argument moot

williamsinstitute.law.ucla.eduNearly half of transgender people surveyed have moved or are considering moving to more trans-affirming places

If we're ignoring political activity outside of the ballot box, which is what critics of trans voters are doing, how else are voters supposed to vote in appropriate democratic representatives if it's not for the representatives who actually hold their most closely held political positions?

I can parse the logic when ppl say trans folks's political activity shouldn't be limited to just refusing to vote for pol's who insufficiently pursue human rights, but that context isn't the case. They organize, the GOTV, they donate, and they show solidarity for other minority blocs in the Dem tent

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

This is the "1 Billion Americans" guy signalling his disinterest in opposing a domestic ethnic cleansing all because he got called a fat nerd with an annoying voice by fans of the Joe Rogan podcast when he went to schlep his book.

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

Matt Yglesias has been bullied so many times by right wingers that he's psychologically broken. He can't embrace the antifascist movement due to his need for approval from the chuds, so everyone else needs to submit to the fascists so they will finally stop calling him a fat, fence sitting pussy.

Replying to @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

i fuckin hate Oklahoma for being a shithole run by fascists but what makes it better than Texas is that at least no one from Oklahoma acts like it ain't anything more than mid. Mid is still delusional, Oklahoma's a shithole, but it's still more modest than Texas

any time i hear about the prohibition and risks of drunk driving, all I can think of is how 99% of bars and liquor stores in the south have a parking lot.

The entertainment district where people go to drink on the weekends next to downtown is basically all single story buildings and basically everyone drives to it.

Also procurement/development is a fucking nightmare. so many programs take way too long and if they don't get cancelled after flushing millions, get jerked around into useless directions between admins for costs in the billions.

It's kinda underrated how much more salient raising taxes is gonna become in the future. democrats would be wise to frame a sharply progressive but still broad tax increase as both fiscal responsibility as well as curbing aggregate demand and by extent inflation.

If our system of justice can determine that shooting a one year-old is justified, then we do not have a system of justice, and our goal should be the eradication of the system we have and its replacement with something better.

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.

To be frank, this is approaching Charles I's attempt to arrest the Five Members in 1642 and we ought to treat it with the same gravity. And perhaps remind those involved how things turned out for Charles I after 'all his birds had flown.' How about we not restage this particular episode?

love it when anarchists say this because most "local community" councils irl in places like new england or small rural towns are typically deeply *right wing* and hate immigrants and queer people despite representing a "broad swathe" of the entire population. leftism is supposed to be COSMOPOLITAN.

The Israeli political consensus is that it is essential for the State of Israel to continue to deny self-government or self-determination to 33% of its population indefinitely, and virtually no mainstream American analysis will even engage with this.
