Hello everyone! If you already know me, good to see you here! If you don't know me: I'm a rendering engineer at Disney Animation working on our Hyperion Renderer. I've worked on every Disney Animation film since Zootopia. I post mostly about cool computer graphics and programming stuff.

Nobody loves the Brewers more than Brandon Woodruff, but he was out injured since July, had to beg to be on the World Series roster, and then tonight in a fever dream game he closed G3 and put them one win away from winning it all. How can you not be romantic about baseball?

BTW they also didn't include the 3D model for this year's Apple Watches, but did include 3D models for iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo, and HomeView. Not sure what's going on.

The city where I live is building a new central public library, and to my enormous pleasant surprise, they picked a great architecture firm to do it! They picked SOM, who have built some spectacularly beautiful modern libraries. Pretty excited about this!

I would have been fine with like Gensler or Foster or whatevs too. Firms like BIG or Herzog & de Meuron would have been interesting but cost would be a slight worry. If they had picked Morphosis I would campaign to vote out the entire city council for insane fiscal mismanagement.

In this World Series, I’m rooting for Game 7 and extra innings, and then may the best team win. Just imagine how memorable it is going to be for whichever team wins to win their very first ring in a Game 7.

I realized that the original English voice cast in Bluey now sounds weird to me because my daughter watches Bluey almost entirely in Cantonese and Mandarin, so I’ve gotten used to those voices instead of the original Queensland voices.

Just to be clear: in this case, this is actually not a rendering blooper. This is a super intentional joke that ties to other stuff in the story; we did this on purpose here. But it looks a lot like a common type of rendering blooper, which I think makes it extra fun!

One of the recent Hexed promos has this gag in it. Normally this type of thing is a bugged render for us (pipeline didn't export the skin or exported it in the wrong place, or visibility flag was broken), but for Hexed, we got to put it in the movie!

At every studio I've worked at, there's always a folder somewhere that everyone saves bad renders and animation/sim goofs in, and boy howdy you should see some of the stuff in there. It'll never see the light of day, but every one of those folders is a comedy goldmine.

A favorite category of broken render of mine is what I call "laser eyes": it's when one end of the eyelashes is correctly pinned to a character's face, but for some reason the other end is located at like 3.4028e+38 units away. You can imagine what it looks like.

I’m sure I’m not the first person to have this realization, but it just occurred to me today that the Muppets and professional wrestling fundamentally operate on the same principle.

One of my favorite Muppet stories is how more than once, when Kermit was on a talk show, the production crew was confused by how bad the sound was for Kermit only to realize that they had put the mic on Kermit, because of course you would put the mic on Kermit.

The new airport near where I live was completed on time, on budget, to the exact spec that we voted for, and the whole project went from groundbreaking to open in about 2 years. By US standards this is already amazing, but I live in California, so this is straight up a miracle.

Fun fact: we don’t know how general anesthesia works. We kinda know the biochemistry but have no idea why it turns consciousness off and on again. We also don’t fully understand how Tylenol works.

If you want to go down a rabbit hole, go look up a bunch of common general anesthetics and note how chemically and structurally they all have no commonality with each other whatsoever and yet they all work well. Then observe that some of them work on plants too. What.

“We” here meaning humanity generally; I’m not a medicinal chemist. My dad, however, is a medicinal chemist, and he has told me many times that medicinal chemistry is one of the best examples of “it’s only messing around if you don’t write it down; if you write it down, then it’s science”.

Something I’ve had to explain before to friends who didn’t grow up in the US is that every US kid who paid attention in high school English class knows the autoignition temperature of paper by heart. Not chemistry class, English class. I haven’t had to explain this a lot, but more than zero times!

Friend who grew up in Asia who is baking something on parchment paper: “oh shoot what’s the safe temperature for this?” Everyone immediately: “below 451°” Friend: “thanks! Wait why did you all know that immediately?” Everyone: “high school English class” Friend: “??????”

Finally got around to seeing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Great movie! Is it just me, or is it wildly better looking than the previous three Spider-Man films? In fact from a cinematography perspective it’s better looking than pretty much all other MCU films?

Also something that really struck me was how much Brand New Day feels like a love letter to New York City, in a way that felt far more authentic than any previous Spider-Man movie.

Literally every time I see a video for the X2D II 100C or the CFV 100C paired with a 500C/M, I absolutely fall for it and am like "oh man I really really want one of those".

All remaining games in all four Division Series matchups are now elimination games. October baseball is the best sport ever, and this is October baseball at its best.

Just once, in a regular season game where the Dodgers have a huge lead and it doesn’t matter, I want to see Dave Roberts let Kiké Hernandez play catcher for like one at-bat.

Pet peeve of mine: when tech people who should know better name a thing an "operating system" when it is, in fact, not an operating system. "This is our new operating system for [insert thing here]." -> turns out to actually be an electron app running on iOS or whatever.

More fun old CineFex finds: this amazing ad in the June 1997 issue from Blue Sky Studios looking for interested applicants. I think this must have been in the middle of production on their "Bunny" demo short, well before the first Ice Age went into production.

So I'm working on a small sideproject to convert all of the old CineFex iOS app digital issues into nice, high-res, print-layout-accurate, OCR'd/searchable PDF files. More on that later. Along the way I found this ad from the April 1981 issue. What a wild time that was!

Sometime early in 2010 I found a TIGSource thread from a guy making some block game. I bought access to the "infdev" preview and subsequently went into like a fugue state for a week playing it. I don't remember anything from that week except blocks. Anyhow that was Minecraft.

I own Factorio in my Steam library but have studiously and diligently avoided ever installing it or even downloading it and I am determined to never play it, because I know myself well enough to know that the moment I try it, I will disappear for like 3 months into that game.

I still play Minecraft today, and I'm super looking forward to in a few years when my kid is old enough for me to play Minecraft with her. Easily the best bang-for-the-buck $6 or whatever it was that I ever spent.

The Phillies stave off elimination for one more day, on an Alec Bohm (of all people!) 10th inning opposite field home run. BRB, have to go fill out my Alec Bohm apology form...

I think that if I were operating an in-demand restaurant, I would start prioritizing reservations not made using agents and put agent reservations at the bottom of the queue always, even below walk-ins. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if restaurants really started doing this.

Every once in a while I think about how the Oakley Sunglasses guy sold his company for billions, but then instead of going into politics or whatevs, he did the irrational but utterly awesome thing of starting his own digital cinema camera company from scratch, which was RED.
