As we continue to stand alongside the people of Palawan, Yes to Life, No to Mining calls for Calmia’s immediate withdrawal from privately owned Indigenous lands and for the authorities to revoke its mining permit.

The company’s advance is already destroying decades-old coconut groves and fruit orchards that sustain local livelihoods, with primary forest threatened next. Calmia is also operating without a Mayor’s Permit and NCIP consultation processes directly violated indigenous customary laws.

At dawn on October 1, heavily armed guards from Calmia Nickel Inc. entered privately owned coconut farmland in Linao, Brooke’s Point, fencing it with barbed wire to force their way towards the uplands.

🇨🇴✊️In Jericó, Colombia, defending water means protecting the land where food is grown, community-run water systems and the possibility of continuing to live on that land. This is the struggle farming communities are sustaining against AngloGold Ashanti’s Quebradona mining project. 🧵👇

Following the worldwide days of action against ISDS, YLNM reaffirms our solidarity with the Jericó 11 and the communities defending their right to say NO to mining and YES to life. The Jericó 11 are not alone. Defending water is not a crime 💧🌱 #Los11DeJerico #StopISDS #YesToLifeNoToMining

In August, an extension allowing Quebradona to continue exploration until December 2027 was announced under the new government, although the decision had been signed before it took office. This authorisation is not a licence to begin mining.

⚖️ The contrast exposes the inequality at the heart of this conflict: those defending their territory must answer to the criminal justice system, while the company has access to international mechanisms to bring claims against the state over decisions it considers harmful to its investments.

The Jericó 11 continue to face criminal charges over acts of resistance in 2022 and 2023. Their hearing scheduled for August, was postponed until March 2027. They continue to fight for their freedom, while the proceedings and the uncertainty facing their families drag on 💥

For YLNM, the right to say NO to mining and YES to life means that peoples must be able to determine the future of their territories. Exercising that right should never come with a bill from a mining company.

The consequences extend beyond compensating corporations for future lost profits. Public resources go into defending claims, while the threat of arbitration can discourage governments from taking action. Communities must keep defending hard-won protections on yet another front 💥

Measures secured through those struggles can become the target of investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS): a system that allows foreign investors to sue governments over decisions they claim harm their investments.

A new primer published by Common Frontiers, researched and written by Jen Moore of the Institute for Policy Studies, examines how Canadian investors use this system to exert pressure on governments and challenge protections for people and the environment.

Today, YLNM joins the worldwide days of action to end ISDS. From 15–17 October, we stand with movements around the world demanding an end to this system and respect for peoples’ right to determine their own futures.

Yet investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS) allows foreign investors to sue governments over decisions they claim harm their investments: including measures to stop destructive mining projects. Through international arbitration, companies can demand billions in public money.

Behind these cases are communities who have organised for years to defend their land, water and livelihoods. Their hard-won victories should not be undermined by corporate demands for compensation.
