We compared 535,239 Google rankings with 354,955 AI citations across 42 topical maps. Four findings I keep coming back to.

The maps were built for real brands rather than sampled randomly. The findings describe those 42 maps, not every subject on Google.

Ranked coverage tracked AI citations more closely than Domain Rating on every engine. Broader coverage didn't improve citations on queries a site already ranked for.

Does this prove coverage causes AI citations? It doesn't, because the study compares sites at one point in time rather than following them.

We compared 535,239 Google rankings with 354,955 AI citations across 42 topical maps. Four findings I keep coming back to.

Sites covering more of a topical map were cited more often by all four AI engines. 26.8% to 43.7% of citations went to sites that didn't rank for the query answered.

We tracked 29,319 queries in the study, one per topic. We didn't count keyword variations, and that decision is what makes the coverage numbers mean anything.

Before you trust any coverage percentage, ask what it divides by. A topical map gives you a real denominator, and a raw keyword list doesn't.

Ten keywords with the same intent return almost the same results. Count all ten and a site gets credit ten times for covering what is really one topic.

Three things break at once: - Its coverage looks broader than it is - The subject looks larger than it is - Comparisons favor whoever sits on the biggest keyword groups

The names describe ranked coverage and nothing else. Tourists collectively held 63.1% of all top-20 positions, so the tier isn't a judgment on quality.
