Golden hog.

The gold, 22-foot Donald Trump statue definitely isn’t a false idol. You can tell because Trump’s pastor friend said of the new statue at his Doral golf course, “Let me be clear: this is not a golden calf.”

First contract, down to ~3. Then turn around and expand it. A lot. 100 or so should suffice.

elijahplovejoy.bsky.social@elijahplovejoy.bsky.social

Don't call it "expanding" SCOTUS. And, for God's sake, don't call it "court-packing." Call it **right-sizing** the Court. (There are 13 circuits now -- not the 9 circuits there were when it was set at 9 justices 157 effing yrs ago!) Or call it *modernizing* the Court. Thank you.

Blockade of Strait of Hormuz means Trump Admin is replacing the post-WWII maritime order (Pax Americana) with a global protection racket (Rex Americana), rejecting both hegemony and multipolarity. Seems important. Any one considering how this may play out?

Inalienable right to unvote. A version of vote-of-no-confidence.

Teresa@pissedoffarmyvet.bsky.social

Since we all vote for who we want for president, we should also have the right to vote for the removal of said president. Congress hasn't done shit, let "WE THE PEOPLE " vote this POS out!

I've started observing MAGA relatives very closely. Initially, they ask the right questions, voice relatable concerns. And yet, then land back in MAGA land. A big factor is their media bubble; they're not even aware of (authentic) opposing views, just accepting FOX News' caricatures.

Whelp, replies appear chronologically (in reverse). Now I know why others enumerate their replies. I hate "social media" so much.

I have no idea if listening will help *politically*. But I'm tired of fighting. And I'm grateful, so grateful, to have my family back.

And I've completely run out of ideas. I've learned that mockery, criticizing Dear Leader, sarcasm, and other New Left era tactics, backfire. So I try very hard to abstain. Instead, I'm now trying to listen, really listen. That radical empathy stuff. Be more like Brené Brown.

For comparison, +30M acres are used to grow corn ethanol. Solar would free half that land to grow more food for people.

John Smillie@johnsmillie42.bsky.social

12.7M acres of solar is is about 82% of the solar required to decarbonize the US in the Net Zero America E+ scenario (there's wind and existing nuclear and stuff in there too, but that's the solar portion). Or we can have 5% of our gasoline displaced.

Just formalizes the status quo. No average person is anonymous.

Mike Stabile@mikestabile.bsky.social

"Stripping anonymity from the internet would constitute one of the most sweeping rollbacks of civil rights in recent history. It would allow for unprecedented levels of mass surveillance and censorship, endangering the most marginalized members of society."

Ambigious rules, lethally enforced.

southpaw@nycsouthpaw.bsky.social

Seems like the emerging policy is: you people out there are responsible for setting up your own governments, but if the US doesn’t like who ends up in charge we’ll just assassinate or kidnap them and then the ball is back in your court.

IIRC, GWB declared himself The Chief Decider.

hilzoy@hilzoy.bsky.social

I think others did as well. (Rumsfeld, Cheney…) But I think I asked enough people over the years to be pretty sure that there was no actual meeting at which a decision was taken.

Duh.

Sen. Van Hollen: "It's my view that the Trump administration has been lying to the American people. This has never been about stopping drugs…This from the beginning has been about getting rid of Maduro, grabbing Venezuela's oil for American oil companies and Trump's billionaire buddies."

If Waymos become the norm, we can stop wasting money on all those traffic signs everyone ignores. Ditto lane striping, traffic lights, etc.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)

Andy Rooney, patron saint of punditry, would disagree.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

related to this a lot of people in the pundit class need to learn how to just be annoyed by someone or something without turning it into What’s Wrong With America

Why do people still play chess?

I don’t think this is a narcissistic injury, but it is an egoistic injury. And it hurts a lot! If a computer can do everything I can do, what makes me valuable? This is a difficult question to answer

AI, ML, LLMs, etc. have always had intrinsic bias. Because the training data itself is biased. (h/t James Mickens PhD, many others). Dr Tanksley's update wrt the harms caused by these tools is both entirely predictable and terribly sad.

No uncontested races. A meager filing fee buys you column space in a voters guide. Editorial boards and endorsing orgs will at least talk to you. Cheapest, widest, easiest way to promote our values, platform, and positions.

Josh Zingher@zingherpolisci.bsky.social

Democrats contested all 100 Virginia House of Delegates races. Part of the party’s statewide success is due to the synergies between the legislative and statewide campaigns—even the losing ones. This is a big reason why Jay Jones won comfortably. This is a model the Dems should emulate everywhere

Reactionary beliefs in a nutshell.

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

So Elon can demand Grok be fed a bunch of training data where it has conversations that skew it conservative, but they simply do not have enough text describing a world that aligns with right wing ideology to actually make it have reasoning that holds together

Just like the NY Times, Roberts thinks SCOTUS is above the fray, and sometimes regrettably gets politicized by others. Murc's Law yadda yadda.

Matthew Stiegler@matthewstiegler.bsky.social

Roberts (through his counselor) making a point of saying that his criticism of rising threats against judges had nothing to do with Trump. Fascinating.

Yup. Ask yourself: Do you want be right? Or do you want to win?

ICE agents view themselves as an expressly political goon squad in service of an expressly political project. When Dems get into power they need to understand this and treat ICE like a political opposition group in need of reconstruction, because that's what it is.

Yes but: That "blindspot" is their business model. h/t Sinclair Lewis, yadda yadda.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Pundit brain is very US focused: the points of reference are US left/right, and the Smart Take is always saying the right has a point that the left refuses to acknowledge. This is a huge blindspoint when "the point" is a is a bad-faith misdirection to justify authoritarianism.

Someone should tell A.G. Sulzberger.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

The point of journalism is to tell people the truth! If the population and political leaders are panicking about something that isn't happening, your job as a reporter is to loudly debunk it — not plead with the other party to join the panic.

Nicely spotted, terrific analogy. Could Project Runway's narrative form illustrate our profession's customary sage advice? a la Goldratt's The Goal and the The Phoenix Project. (I haven't watched Halt & Catch Fire. Maybe I should. Having lived it, I haven't felt compelled to relive it.)

Allen Holub@allenholub.bsky.social

I was watching Project Runway last night (don't judge 😄), and this particular season's dysfunction-for-entertainment aligns closely with the problems of many (certainly not all) software shops. Let's discuss. 1/11

WTF. No (Dem) chair/leader should even comment on a (Dem) contest. My (very professional) local party chair does not, will not comment on candidates, campaigns, issues. They even abstain from all votes. @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social stay in your lane, FFS. (h/t @lebassett.bsky.social)

Ken Klippenstein@kenklippenstein.bsky.social

Hakeem Jeffries says of Cuomo's attacks on Mamdani for living in a rent controlled apartment: "It's a legitimate issue that has been raised, and the [Mamdani] campaign is going to have to address it."

@pmarca has never forgiven UIUC for suing him (and winning) for stealing the source code for Mosaic. His blather about DEI is just payback.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

What discrimination did Andreessen face? He went to a public university & was able to work on early federally funded research projects on computing, and turn that into a career. The insanity of the last 8 years? Workers or online posters who disagreed with him? A government that dared regulate him?

Yup. Return to the pre-Sputnik arrangement, where uni was finishing school for the rich.

Hilary Banks, Jr.@hilarybanksjr.bsky.social

This is so so sad. And I don’t see many people talking about the student loan shit they jammed in that bill. They’ve ensured only the rich can go the college. They capped the amount you can borrow over 4 years AND cut Grad Plus loans (which is how I paid my rent during law school).

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

No. It is not the job of ordinary citizens to show perfect message discipline. It is the responsibility of actors with agenda-setting power — like, say, national newspapers — not to treat random-ass people exaggerating as a threat equivalent to the madman president.
